What book are you reading?

Postby jonesthecurl on Mon Aug 18, 2008 11:24 pm

I thought that the "What song are you listening to" thread had survived a long time, even though usually people just name the song and express no opinion.

I'm reading a book more often than I'm listening to a song, I wondered what others read.

At the moment I'm reading one of the "Inspector Lestrade" books by M J Trow - as you can guess, they're Victorian detective stories with Holmes as a minor character.

They're both good stories, and humourous.

The Lestrade character reminds me a bit of the character in the Discworld books, the head of the City Watch, whose name I forget for the moment.

I'm reading a history book called To the Shores of Tripoli. For the little I've read of it, it seems to be the least dry history book I've ever read, detailing both the historical background to the Barbary Wars and the birth of the US Navy and Marine Corps and President Jefferson's personal feelings on the matter. I highly recommend it for history buffs, especially those interested in military or early US history.

I'm reading a book by Michael Flynn called Starfire. I find myself enjoying science fiction that is actually science fiction - a rare thing these days. 8-)

jonesthecurl, isn't the Discworld character's name Vimes? I'm wanting to say Sam Vimes, but that might be wrong. FUNNY guy, though.

You're exactly right. I remembered the "Sam", but my brain kept giving me "Sam Spade", no matter how I told it it was wrong.
When I first read Trow's books I had a slight suspicion that he might be Pratchett writing under a psuedonym. Not for long, he doesn't have the sustained poweres of invention of Pratchett, but there are similarities,

Do you guys at least have to translate it? I had to translate it.

I've been reading Cathedral by Raymond Carver. It's one of his collections of short stories.

I just finished THE FORGOTTEN SOLDIER by Guy Sajer--awesome

I'm reading The Odyssey by Homer for like the 10th time.
Bikini Planet by David Garnett, which I purchesed based off of this critics remarks "A billion monkeys on a billion typewriters for a billion years couldn't come up with this one."
And I'm thumbing through The Handy Physics Answer Book by P. Erik Gundersen

It is unique for me to read so much as I am a film buff, but I sdon't eally have a lot of money for DVDs right now, so I'm back to my old ways.

Actually nothing, at this moment of time. But before I stopped reading about a week or so ago [I got assessments and sleep!], I was reading The God Delusion for the second time. Before that, I think it was The Twelve Caesar's by Suetonius. I feel like reading the Jesus Scrolls again, but I think I might read The Histories.

Or I might be reading a fictional book, so mm. Hard to choose.

No, but we're going to be translating something in class. Probably the Iliad or something.

Currently I just started reading "Black Sunday" by Thomas Harris (yes he wrote Silence of the Lambs but no this isn't about Hannibal Lecter). I am about to begin reading chapter 3.

Really? The Iliad? Wouldn't that be in Greek?

Oh, and Nikolai, I really did want to know how you would define Sci Fi.

Hmm, might be time for a new share your views thread, so as not to hijack jonesy's.

Also, I finished Cathedral last night. Now I'm diving into Black Boy by Richard Wright.

It is a bit embarrassing that I haven't yet ever read it. It's been on my shelf collecting dust for a number of months now, since I rescued it from a yard sale.
