America's illogicall fixation on race

Postby BoganGod on Fri Sep 25, 2009 8:00 am

I reside in the nation that leads the world in hobbit related scenery. I call myself a kiwi or a New Zealander. American media is pretty much world wide, and have noticed that there is no such thing as an american. There are native american, african americans, hispanic americans, asian americans, and the list goes on. Is been american not good enough, do you all have to make reference to your skin color or eye shape as well. I know people from a lot of different racial backgrounds living here in New Zealand and they all refer to themselves as kiwis, they are proud of been kiwis and their nationality supersedes their race. A nation is divided if it is broken down into special interest groups, and races that are for themselves first, and nation second.

Just on a side note I'm part maori, jewish, german, scottish, irish, english, welsh, spanish and dutch.

Please explain!

Well native Americans are the only true americans. The rest are all immigrants or decendants of immigrants. To Americans, what are the ethnical choices in a census for white Americans? Is it European American, white American or what?

PS: I love you ancestry, if this was a sci-fi movie you'll be a mutant.

To answer your question, the option is usually "non-hispanic white" or something along those lines.

... The designations you refer to, (Race)-American, is a fairly recent creation. The use of this language was created by the American left to categorize citizens (and non-citizens) into identifiable groups. It serves the purpose of victim-politics which is a hallmark of the American left. It also breaks populations down into somewhat clearly identifiable voting blocks.

... Think about how often you see news relating to some African-American, Hispanic-American, Asian American group or another. In nearly every instance you will also see a politician, almost assuredly a Democrat, decrying some injustice.

... This structure is essential to the abandonment of American culture in favor of multi-culturalism and all the politics that come with it.

... "Senator (whoever) has done so much for African Americans".

... "Representative (pick a name) fought against (pick a policy), a clear sign that he is out of touch with the (Race)-American community".

... It's really quite absurd.

I think its a personal choice, depending on which background (Spanish or white) they most strongly identify with.

non-Hispanic white == this is why Sotomayor is considered the first Hispanic member of the supreme court despite a previous justice of Portuguese heritage.

When I first saw a hispanic comedian on TV, mock-sympathising with the plight of white comedians (who,he said had to be more politically correct), I thought "It'll be news to the Spanish that they aren't white. What about Italians? are they white?"

I have a feeling most Greeks and Italians with respective passports would disagree with that statement.

It just seems to me that racial tags divide rather than unite. If people feel like they are part of a minority then they feel justified protecting their "interests" because they are special or picked on. The majority get to whinge about the minorities been to vocal. Those that yell the loudest get the most attention. So why not just be americans.

Essentially, it comes from the anti-discrimination movements of the 60's and 70's. Blacks took the name "African American" or "black" as opposed to the other, less flattering termst hat had previously been applied. This became tied to funding.

It was not long before other groups decided they, too had been discriminated against. You can dispute my timeline, but I would say Italien Americans and Asians were sort of the first, wiht hispanics not too far after. Note that each of these groups truly has been seriously discriminated against at one point.

Then, suddenly none of the designations were enough. I can remember counting 17 different categories on a State of California application ... "hispanic from Mexico", "Hispanic from XYZ latin American countries" .. "other hispanic" ... Japananese, Chinese, Korean, etc... etc. etc....
and then seeing "white" and "black" and thinking "WAIT... if you are going to distinguish a Mexican from an ElSalvadoran, then I am not simply 'white', I am xyz(european country)-American!"

While I do think discrimination was real, needed correction and so forth, I also believe that its time to mostly set those things aside. You cannot have equity for everyone on earth.. it just does not happen. You cannot even ensure that every person in a country really has equal "opportunity". My father was a farm worker all my life. He made enough, but mostly we got by because my parents were very, very frugal, we grew our own food and were pretty careful about extras. Also, we were lucky enough to have health care (a biggie!!!). Yet, when I went to college, I found that my classmate, who happened to have been black, but who was adopted by a fairly well-off (white) family was eligible for all sorts of special programs for which I did not qualify. His parents each went to College. My mother dropped out after a year and my father never went. We grew up in the same area, went to the same basic school system (except that he had a couple of years in a private school), even attended the same church, our parents were part of many of the same organizations. Yet, he was qualified for assistance and I was not.

Ironically, BOTH of us were far better off than many people of all colors, simply because we were lucky enough to live where we did.

One of the most telling comments comes from EEO cases ... basically, it is not illegal to be a jerk to an employee/coworker. It is only illegal to be a jerk to them because of their ethnic identify, race, gender, etc. On the one hand, none of us really want to live in a country where people get fired for calling a co-worker a "jerk-off" or such. On the other hand, none of us wants to have to listen to someone constantly berating us, calling us names, cheating us, etc. Why should it matter so much more than you call someone an N@@#$ as opposed to $$#@% [insert any slur without a racial or gender connotation].

I don't think thats true, I'm classed as British Asian and I think it actually helps. If I was just classed as British, or as Indian, then I think one way or the other its denying me part of my life or my heritage. This way I feel no resentment and can proudly identify myself as what I am and it also helps other people when I say I'm British Asian as they automatically have a depper understanding of me then if I say "I'm British but have brown skin" or "I'm an Indian living in Britain".

Well, during WWII, Italiens in parts of CA could not go closer than x blocks (cannot remember the total) to the ocean. Long before and for a good while after that, Italiens were routinely excluded from various jobs, etc. for a long time (as were Germans, etc.). On the CA job application I spoke of above, "Italien" was a category.

Of course, I am largely Scandinavian, but if I go out in the sun.... I could readily pass for Native American ;)

Hmm... I was referring to skin color. I believe you are referring to society-imposed racial designation.

You get a lot more detail in the British forms, theres 3/4 subcategories for each one. You get Black British (African, Caribbean, Other), Asian British (Indian, Pakistani, Bengali, other) and so on. This is what its like at the college I work at so I'm assuming thats following the way the government sets it out.

Nonetheless, afaik most Greeks and Italians who actually live in Greece and Italy consider themselves "white" in pretty much the same way Swedes in Sweden consider themselves "white".

I know a considerable part of the history behind it, but even so it's a bit confusing to an outsider, the way there are all sorts of categories for people in the USA.

So white is a synonym for European I think. I have actually seen a "European" designation on some applications (instead of caucasian).

Outside the United States, Yank or Yankee is a slang term, sometimes but not always derogatory, for any U.S. citizen.

No, I was not disputing this at all, just pointing out the historical reality in the US. Nowadays, Italiens are mostly considered "white". Anyway, that it matters is, well reflective of a few things... but that's for another day.

In short, people that come from Europe or are completely European in decent, are considered white and never address themselves as "Something" American unless 1st or second generation. By the 3rd, they consider themselves more or less American. Others, with some exceptions, always add the continent or region they were born in before "American." The ones from Europe, at least say which country they are from.
"Eh, whatever."

The American Media, except for fox news and a few others to a lesser extent, is playing the race card. I for one am paying close attention to this race-bating game, so I know their playbook. I will vouch for 99% of people I know in my country and my state, that racism is a very, VERY minor issue. Please, PLEASE refrain from watching NBC specifically....I don't mind CNN sometimes, but they are advanced players. I Admit I simply could not stand FOX since it's inception, but I am seeing more liberals on their station getting their fair say and a LOT of real, civil debate.
