Copyed maps(Andy read)

Post by Unit_2 »

There are 9 maps on Grand Strategys that are copyed from cc, they are :

Africa
Asia
Benelux
British Isles
Germany
Italy
Middle east(before the revamp)
Montreal
North America

Why are they on there? they can't use the same maps can they?

The copywrite for all maps belong to the map maker not conquer club. The map maker is free to use their own work as they see fit :)

well sometimes people will copy the layout of the map and do their own graphics.

for instance, I know that Rev Kyle made his own version of Africa and put that onto Landgrab. It's exactly the same layout just his own (crappy) graphics.

Are they exactly the same? I guess we'd need to ask Marval, RjBeals and others if they posted their maps on there if they are indeed their maps and not just layout copy versions.

Here is mine.

It looks like someone just traced mine and used the same colors / styles. But it does suck.

Yes. Right click and view image location for a direct link to where the image is saved.. Right on their servers.

There is a yahoo group here:
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/grandstrategy/
which I posted on, however the message must be approved by the moderators before it's posted publicly, So I doubt it will ever be posted.

Here is the message, which I also emailed the site owner

bryanbrun@yahoo.com
bryanbrun@gmail.com

rob.beals email wrote:bryanbrun, I am the Italy map maker, and I would appreciate some sort of recognition. My original map created for conquerclub can be found here: http://www.conquerclub.com/maps/Italy.S.jpg After looking more closely at what you've done, I'm not sure if you traced my map, or edited it. The water routes look different, which makes me believe you traced the map and just made it look as close as possible to the original.

In addition, there's many more maps you've used directly from the 'other' risk style game site. A user there altered us in the map makers forum. Some are direct copies.

http://www.conquerclub.com/maps/Africa.S.jpg

This Africa is an example. I understand us Conquerclub map makers most likely did not get an official copyright for our images, but it's just wrong to steal a map image which took months of work to complete, with no reference to the original webpage or cartographer.

Thank you unit-2 for posting this. How frustrating.

Such things like this are always sad to see. Though I may recall the Africa map's cartographer letting them use his map with his permission, but I may be remembering incorrectly.

Seeing RJ's rip off map is indeed frustrating to see. I implore other map makers to step up and defend your rights with your maps.

The only 'Good' I see out of all this, is at least at Conquer Club we have the best damn Cartographers. :)

this would absolutely piss me off... Rj, I wouldn't ask for recognition, I would tell them to remove the map entirely. Cease and desist, baybee, cease and desist!

Wow, they don't even change the colors!! That's ballsy.

You obviously havent created "art". Someone else taking your idea and using it elsewhere is a sad story. I know if i woke up one day and found out that portugal have been copyied on some other site i would not be happy. I didnt spend months on a map just to ahve someone fast track and take my work for themselfs.

Bryan Brunton to me wrote:Rob,

All of the unedited maps from Conquer Club on GS only appear with their original authors permissions. I actually saved my communications with all of the authors if you would like to see any of those.

Or alternately, please contact the authors of those maps (Africa, Germany, etc) and you can verify that I first asked their permissions.

Yes the GS Italy map was most obviously based upon your map from Conquer Club. However, as you noted there are differences. There were changes that I wanted to my version of the map which I feel improve the game play.

Most importantly I did not edit or use any graphical content from your original map. I simply looked at it and reproduced. It not only differs in content but it differs in size, spacing, army placement and other areas. I did not edit your original map in anyway.

I commend you on the map. It is fine map with excellent color choice and I like how you turned Italy on its side so to make it more playable.

Best regards,
Bryan

The only changes I see are the city bonuses, and a +6 for isole (which doesn't make much sense). As far as contacting the original map makers for directly using their maps, thats cool. I still find it devious to make pretty much an exact replica of Italy, graphically. You say you simply looked at mine, but If I stacked them on top of each other, I bet the "Size" and "Spacing" would be identical.

Bryan Brunton to me wrote:Yes, after playing the map, the +6 for isole is too large. I think I'll have to return that to it's original +3.

By spacing I meant the spacing of the armies on the map. I had to change many of those as yours were too close to each other in many cases. You can click on the armies in GS to select them.

The admins at CC have censored me at the site. They have told me to never mention GS in any form or my account will be deleted. I can still play games there, I just can't ever mention GS. Otherwise, I would have contacted you regarding the map, and perhaps simply asked for you to make a version for GS as I did for the other CC maps prior to this censorship.

GS is no business for me as CC is for Lack. It is hobby. As I tell everyone who becomes Premium, I donate part of the Premium money to Heiffer International, a charity that feeds people in third world countries.

Regards,
Bryan
