It's mostly luck. I got two small squares and an invincible. My next highest score was 131 with two invincibles. If you get two 1000 point bonuses, you're pretty much screwed as far as square counting goes...

I don't go by score, it's way too easy to rack that up. Square count is where it's at.
And Neoteny: there is skill involved. I got 103 with two invincibles and a mini square; you got 130 with the same.
