What do you want to see? -general consensus-

Post by Natewolfman »

Im all about trying to find new and inventive ways of making tournaments, and while right now i suppose im still relativly young in terms of experience, im trying to get a good range of what people like... currently i am running

1 Terminator tournament (advance through making a kill)
1 Assassin tournament (accepting players)
1 16 player 1v1 tournament
1 League (exploreing all forms of classic options/accepting players)
1 Point based advancement tournament
1 Storyline tournament (also point based advancement)
1 1v1 tournament broken into many parts for EVERY map
1 team based tournament (in the making, not posted yet)

so as you can see its a short list, but i think a well rounded one... but tell me what do you like to play? whats your favorite form for tournament? what do you want to see more of? what even small little map setting would you like to see incorperated into the main point which is normally set aside? any little thing will help, im just trying to think of some new and inovative ways to control a group of games and keep it fresh and interesting

You've got to let the ideas flow, that's what I do. I like (as a Tournament Director) to see lots of options for our players. As for what I do personally to find ideas, I usually do the following:

1. Don't Force It — I can't stress this enough. I did that twice in my mind (no, I'm not going to tell you which ones they were) and I have lived to regret it. When you find an idea you like, go with it. The other key is to run tournaments you like to run. If you have a thing for brackets, use brackets.

2. Keep Notes — Usually I am pretty good at keeping good ideas locked away in my head, but for more complicated ones, right down the basics somewhere. I just use a typed document saved to the jump drive that goes everywhere with me. I've also written ideas on the back of receipts before when I don't want to forget. Right now, I've got 17 tournaments fully fleshed out with all the details, just waiting for me to find the time to run them.

3. Take Your Time — Developing a really good idea takes time. If you want to know my secret, a college level Shakespeare class is perfect for inspiration. ;) Well, that and nothing to do at work. At any given time I've got 5 or 6 ideas I've got half-made spreadsheets for that I will work on for 15 minutes here, or 5 minutes there. That is where the really good ideas are made.

Anyways, my favorites in a more direct answer to your question, are bracket style (preferably double or triple-elimination), and round-robin style (as long as it is something like 3 or 4 games at a time maximum).
