Does sarcasm come through in online forums?

Postby jimboston on Mon Mar 31, 2008 2:04 pm

So... what do you think? Does sarcasm come through on here, or should we all just make completely bland and unentertaining posts?

(... of course there's absolutely NO middle ground here.)

Wicked.... who accused you of anything?

I would not do that! Not to someone with an Avatar as hot as yours!

If you sometimes are sarcastic... then you shouldn't vote "No".
Unless of course your vote was sarcastic too.
Hmmm... maybe you have a point....

define sarcasm?

(probably should insert a little funny emoticon here to ensure that the sarcasm comes through)

With all the new and improved forum features --plus that new car smell-- it's unfortunate
that a sarcasm font was not installed too.

I would like an emoticon that shows me sticking my foot up someones arse when they don't realize I'm being sarcastic. :D

Or you can just get people to imagine it. Especially if it was clapper's arse. That would bring a whole new set of players to CC.

:? + + = foot in arse

actually that may be the visual representation of a forum fart... not the aformentioned use of the foot.

The simple answer is that traditional text based messaging systems including text based forums lack the necessary non verbal communication channels that make sarcasm work. This is not to say that you can’t do sarcasm in text based forums, but rather it is exceptionally more difficult to do using text alone.

Now was I being sarcastic in the above paragraph? You can’t tell; there are no non verbal clues at all to go with. You don’t hear the tone of my voice, you can’t see my facial expressions, and you can’t even see any possible hand gestures. (And a good thing at that I should point out … you would need a wide screen monitor just to read this.)

Since the text is raw and unfiltered with non verbal signals it becomes difficult to do unless you have a very good command of the language, perhaps at a level to Winston Churchill. Otherwise, you have a good chance of falling flat in your sarcasm. I without Microsoft Word I have a good chance at misspelling it.

I see a lot of people don't even like to vote sarcastically.

tzor... I like your 'simple' answer... very succinct

You have to accompany your posts with a lot of smilies to show you're being sarcastic.

Obviously you think only non verbal clues work here.

That's not true. You can convey things like sarcasm quite well in a text-based medium, you just have to try a little harder. Obviously not everyone is going to get it, but then again not everyone gets it it in real life either.

I can quote a number of posts that quite clearly are sarcastic in nature if you're any good at reading.
