The Mediterranean Map [Idea]

Postby Code_Zero on Fri Apr 18, 2008 2:56 pm

I have been putting together some stuff for a map of the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.
I have nearly finished my first rough copy and I will post it in a few hours.
This is my first time making a map so any advice will be appreciated.

Problem 1: Imperium Romanum (by qwert, currently on hold while he works on the Final Forged Ardennes Offensive) covers the same area with some interesting city bonuses and such.

Problem 2: Europe (quenched and in play) covers Europe and North Africa, virtually the Mediterranean. Normal game mechanics.

Not to discourage you, but you'll need to do some interesting things to separate your Mediterranean map from the two that cover the same general territory. Best of luck.

why fight off critisism, without that a map wont be good, fighting it off will get you nowhere
-
some advice is that yes, you will always get critisism, however that is what makes a map good, theres no point fighting it and doing it completely your way, do it your way and listen to the other people,
as long as you listen to the critisism you will do well, what catfish is saying is that the person's map that we crtisisized ignored it and that is not what to do,
good luck,
hope to see a draft soon :)

I really don't see either of those as problems. Personally, I play Risk because it is a game of strategy. I really don't care if two maps cover the exact same geographic area as long as they have different enough divisions of territories. Whenever the number of territories and the way in which they connect and form continents is changed, the map becomes a new strategic experience. Take, for example, Classic and World 2.1, both of which cover the same area (the world) and both of which have standard gameplay, but are radically different to play on. While that example may be extreme, the fact that other maps cover the same geographic area is hardly a reason to not develop this Mediterranean map.

That being said, if the territory divisions turn out to be the same as in Imperium Romanum or as in Europe, this map will run into problems.

It may be a different strategic experience, but the question is HOW MUCH of a difference is it? Classic has 42 territories, World 2.1 vastly more. The strategy involved with such an increase in territories and connections changes the map strategy entirely. If a map is a too similar to ones already in existence, its difference in strategy will be so small as to be nearly unnoticeable, creating a 2nd map that can be won with virtually the same strategies as the first.

So I'm trying to head off that "minor difference" before our good man Code_Zero gets in a huge pile of disinterest due to similarity. I say this trying to help, not to hinder, for my Citadel map has had to create its own identity separate from CCU, a map it is similar to.

who cares that we have different views, mine are just more realistic, u might just have a personality that wants to please people no matter hat and support them for no reason, im not like that so i speak my mind,
ok enough threadjacking,
-
tack i agree, i told him this in the map ideas annoucement where i was told
CatfishJohnson wrote:no-one cares what you think t-o-m

but enough of taht,
this is very similar to europe which is under development,
im not sure if people are ready for it yet,
go for it, i suggest a "hot" theme, and a very cultural map, that way it will be more different, but the similarities are just very great
