LINUX WARS! [Abandoned]

Postby water_foul on Mon Apr 28, 2008 1:54 am

I am a Linux junkie (I use Ubuntu) and found this site so I got the bright idea of bringing together my two favorite things, Linux and Risk, and came up with linux wars! The game play would be similar to the basic risk map but instead of countries I would carve up the logos of various Linux distros and, of course, Tux, the Linux penguin. So to start with I was going to combine the logos of various Linux distros along with who I need to give credit to. If any 1 wants to help me please just send me to distros with cool logos and I will list what I have below along with how I would cave them up (Suggestions welcome). If I have any usability info wrong let me know

Table of contents:
Post 1: This!
Post 2: Usable Logos
Post 3: Potential Candidates
Post 4: Unusable Logos

Here is a rough draft of how it will look. Please note that I will only include usable logos so once I one another one I can use I'll add it. There are currently only 2 usable logos right now so here what I got
Image
I have 2 ideas with this. I could either leave the lines or, to make it look better, I could only add lines in between logos and allow attacks between all territories within a logo and extra-logo attacks only along lines

Commercial use of the Gentoo "g" logo and Gentoo artwork is allowed for any software or computer hardware product that contains or is based upon content produced by the Gentoo project, or any project or service referencing Gentoo or the Gentoo Project, provided that the following conditions are met:

1. You acknowledge that the "g" logo is a trademark of Gentoo Foundation, Inc. and that any Gentoo artwork is copyright Gentoo Foundation, Inc., and

* there is no commercial intent behind the use

* there is no suggestion (through words or appearance) that your project is approved, sponsored, or affiliated with Ubuntu or its related projects unless it actually has been approved by and is accountable to the Ubuntu Community Council

Permission from us is necessary to use any of the Trademarks under any circumstances other than those specifically permitted above. These include:

* Any commercial use
* Use on or in relation to a software product that includes or is built on top of a product supplied by us, if there is any commercial intent associated with that product.
* Use in a domain name or URL.
* Use for merchandising purposes, e.g. on t-shirts and the like.
* Use of a name which includes the letters BUNTU in relation to computer hardware or software.
* Services relating to any of the above.

Usability: I don't know, the commercial use stuff could become a problem I could use some help in figuring this one out

Bryguy and tom, you guys are trying to noob-bash and failing miserably.

Bryguy -- read the frickin' thread first.

t-o-m -- double posting is not a sin, deal with it. Sometimes multiple posts are necessary.

Both of you are way too discouraging to new-comers, and are making fools of yourselves in the process.

Now, on to the map.
If you can make interesting gameplay to this, you should roll with it. As of now I have no idea as to what the gameplay will be. I think you need to get a kind of draft out, even an incredibly rough one, just to show us how you envision the map.

OK I will try to do so but in the meantime can you help me figure out some of the trademark issues (specifically the ubuntu one) and please let me know if this map could be considered to be used commercially

You seem to be pretty on top of copyright. If you find certain trademarks that you can't seem to use, I'd suggest making a similar, original one yourself. I think this map is perfectly plausible, if done well.

T-O-M and bryguy if your looking to be heros go doit elsewhere. Double posting isnt a crime since its being done to break up vast amounts of info. Bryguy if your going to play copyright police read full threads before running around with large formatted letters.

The noob bashing stops HERE.
What do you know about map making, bitch?

Firstly I'm afraid I have to say this doesn't really get my interest, a logo map would be very unlikely to anyway (except, this idea just came to me now, maybe you could have a map with linux battling its rivals, a sort of corprate war where you have the logos and assets of several different companies in battle, otherwise it doesn't make much sense)

Another thing I've noticed, is that the map is proberbly going to end up as a number of small continents as those logos don't look as if they're gonna split too much.

Other than that, there's not much to say untill you get an actual map up I'm afraid.

i too am struggling with what the point of the map will be.

right now all i can visualise is random images on a screen with nothing to connect them. sort of like a bowl of fruit, without the bowl.
