Brazil rethink... open for discussion

As Lanyards has become yet another victim of the Brazil map revamp I thought I'd try to give it a go. The current Brazil map was the fifth CC map, and as such is something of a classic, but in looking at it I have some concerns beyond the obvious need for a graphics update.

• The regions don't seem to be based on anything - in fact, they disregard the recognized 'regions' of Brazil.
• The impassables also don't seem to be based on anything. The Amazon, for example, isn't impassable.
• The bonus regions are hard to take and hold with one big exception - the South, which is a +2 with just one border.

None of these are points make the map bad, but I think it can be improved upon. I'm just wondering if I'm asking for trouble trying to do more than just update the graphics. Thoughts?

i acnt really comment on GP brcause ive never palyed it.

Since I don't actually think anyone plays that map (too hideous!), I'd go for changing gameplay as well. Maybe see if you can get a poll put up in the GD? Fat chance that will happen, but it's worth a try. Since the current organization of the map doesn't follow any political or cultural lines, I'd definitely like to see it changed, but I'm not sure how most players would feel about that.

I'd shake my finger on changing the gameplay drastically...or even a little bit, I think. I can imagine the out-cry about the Foundry "ruining another map." Do we want to be attached to that again?

I know, that's exactly my concern. But if I'm going to revamp the map, I'd rather make it better... Brazil 2, or Brazil Redux. Is there room out there for two Brazil maps?

you can't change gameplay. It's as simple as that.


making a 'true' brazil map is fine by me. I don't think we can have too many maps. As long as it meets foundry standards, it's fine by me.


I'd be more interested in seeing another South America map with all the countries represented than another Brazil map, though.

As I said, is there any way we could get a poll up to see how most of the community feels about changing the gameplay? For all we know, most of them might not give a crap about it because it's so ugly that no one plays it now anyway.

At the very least, the graphics should be tuned up on this map, even if the gameplay isn't changed. Don't make a "true" Brazil instead of the revamp of the current one.

I don't like the idea of having 2 of the same map. But can't you change the gameplay a little bit if the original artist approves it? If not, I would just revamp it graphically.

One of the dtruggles that the Brazil revamp has always come up against is the impassables... They are not based on anything in particular, and the original mapmaker has been fairly adamant that they should not be made to look like mountains/rivers, as there aren't any where the impassables are...

He has also frequently stated that no gameplay changes can be made, and that it should be a graphical revamp only.

Brazil 2.0 - I'm very against the revamp. Marv is the godfather and this gem should not be changed.

I'm moving away from a straight revamp - let's do something new with it. I'll throw something together in the coming days.

Someone very creative, might be able to move stuff around so that gameplay is the same, but change the exact locations of the borders enough that it actually corresponds with things...

but we'd need Jesus in the foundry to pull that off.

what was wrong with fuzzys map, i was working with fuzzy than laynard had to make t a competition for what fuzzy had no time.

that map just doesn't feel like brazil i think. It's not bad, but it's not on point either.

you can't change gameplay. It's as simple as that.

I believe gameplay can be changed as long as you have the permission of the original mapmaker to sdo so and can justify it.
