Point Dumping

Postby richardgarr on Wed Jul 30, 2008 10:38 pm

I noticed tonight that spikeboat decided to point dump. He managed to lose over 1000 points in less then 20 minutes.
I was really surprised to see a few players join many of his games and take advantage of the free points.
I was wondering if those players are proud of there ability to gain points through this manner.
The players chuck D, SlickChrisDruler and OOGA BOOGA, as well as guinniboy seemed to have gained the most from spikeboats point dumping.
Does this not constitute gross misconduct and abuse. Or is this simply a few players who saw an opportunity to gain an unwarranted jump in rank , and they should be applauded for this behaviour?

This seems to be a re-occurring situation on CC. Was wondering what peoples thoughts are on this.

its dishonorable for sure, but some players dont have pride in their ranks. and those that fly to the top quick and easily end up falling the hardest, lol.

All players profiting from spike dumping points should receive warnings not to join games point dumpers games again. If it happens again, there should be a score reset imo.

As for spike, well... It is definitely gross abuse of the game and I have already told him that I will not play with or against him until he gets his rank back.

do you think a limit on how many speed games a person can play at one time would help?

I will say that I joined 2 of the games, got 20 points total off of him, but I'm paranoid; I still didn't believe he was pt dumping even as his rank dropped. I thought that any second he'll be back in the game, crushing me w/ deferred armies. I myself fluctuate between ranks and I try my damnedest to win, so I could never just make games and not play them. I once played a speed game on Doodle Earth to almost 50 rounds, because I refused to die, so I couldn't just give up points I work to earn to people who will rise in the ranks through no effort.

Not really, because I've seen people make 20 games at 1 time and play them all. So punishing everyone because o the abuse of a few people would suck.

This makes sense. Good suggestion Tisha.

How many speed /freestyle games can one person play at once?, certainly not 50 freestyle games.

some people successfully can play ALOT at once, and it would be wrong to deprive them that insanity.

I was referring to the people that figured out that point dumping was going on, and then ran and joined as many games as they could get into.
I myself have joined 1 or 2 games, unwittingly, of a person point dumping b4. Once I realized what was happening I did not continue to join them.
I must admit the temptation was hard to resist, but in the end I realized that I play for fun, and the gaining of ill gotten points in that manner, would not be fun to me.

I've been tempted myself, but I believe in karma and that would just come back to me if i took advantage. I know you meant the people who joined an excessive amount. I just wanted it out there in case someone wanted to say anything to me about being in those games, I will have freely admitted to it and that it's not even close to what would be considered abusive :D .

I've point dumped - made it down to a regular sergeant from Brigadier in about two weeks.

First it was from Doodle Assassin games, but I figured I was still winning about 2/5 Doodle Assassins, which was keeping me at colonel rating (I played probably around 20 of them and won around 8...). So then I just started tanking, but I refused to play any player twice when dumping... just a personal thing, although quite a few asked. I did it on unsuspecting people. There's nothing that says you can't use poor strategy in a game. I merely attacked all neutrals instead of my enemy. I see cooks who do the same thing all the time. In fact, I had a game where I specifically only attacked neutrals when going in vs a cook, and still managed a win simply because he was strategically retarded and attacking all the neutrals garnered me continents. So unless there's something in the rules about "if you are good you must employ good strategy"... nothing wrong with what he's doing. Although I'm amazed he managed to make cook, I could NOT for the life of me get lower than a regular sergeant... and that was after specifically trying to lose.

He made a whole bunch of freestyle speed games, then deadbeated them all.

It doesn't affect my rank what anyone else does. I'll just mind my own business. What if a high ranked guy just wants to try out some new maps. It shouldn't concern you. If he wants to climb up again, why not let him? Any sucky player who benefit from that is just gonna sink again soon anyway.

Multiple reasons. It could be to enjoy stripping senior ranks of high points when ambushing their games, it could be the enjoyment of rising again etc etc.

Regarding the philosophy of point dumping, I cannot see how anyone could have a problem with it, it is perfectly allowable, and actually does a lot of good. It reverses the inherent flow of points momentarily. It gives people a good feeling should they rise in rank...if they are not actually that good, they will quickly lose them again to more deserving types, so those points will ultimately end up where they should be. It levels the playing field and adds to the frission of who one takes on...

I am staggered at poohs suggestion, it reeks of elitism, something I cannot abide (for all my tongue in cheek remarks to the contrary).

Obviously any gross abuse of the game is forbidden. This includes but is not limited to: throwing games, intentional deadbeating, serial teammate killing, hijacking accounts.

What the player did is against the (ironically) written "Unwritten Rules". That is the problem.

why not... lots of players have done it... fun to get back up, etc.

Prankcall (although I'm not sure it was intentional), KingofGods, Me, Skillerman, Spikeboat... sure there are a few others as well.

I lost 2,000 points to gain the rest of my medals. However, what spike did is against the rules and im sure he will be warned for it.

I saw his games yesterday and I dint join any because I thought how in the world can 1 player play so many at 1 time? Im sure he will give the classic excuse that he dint do it, it was someone else that had access to his account and im sure he will not be held accountable for it like so many others in the past.

He was protesting something or other. Possibly a forum ban or maybe the scoring system, I can't really remember.

EDIT: funny how you don't remember these things, I remember ranting long and hard about it at the time.

Your opinion is highly flawed here Fruit- if those were indeed the reasons, all is required is a pm to an admin for a point reset. There would be no abuse of the system nor abuse from the players that join to scrape off a few extra points. Although there may be 'enjoyment of rising again' but that's after the fact. It has no bearing on why they did it. If you take a look at all the players that Fble mentioned, they were all high ranks- guys that wanted to stay on top and due to the pressure cracked. Those that point dump, do because of their inability to maintain a desired rank.

Yet another example of how 1 vs 1s are grossly abused- if it were not for the game type, you'd rarely ever see this happening.
