Best Batman Comic

Postby Dancing Mustard on Sat Aug 30, 2008 1:30 pm

And they're like "Oh my God, it's him", Becky oh my fucking God it's Eminiem.

So, oh great community, which (in your esteemed opinions) is the best ever Batman comic? I've had a good trawl through my local library's Dark Knight collection recently and I'm wondering if there's any gems out there that I ought to buy/order-from-central-holdings/download-illegaly to complete my study of Gotham's greatest protector?

Also, while we're all here together, might we take the opportunity to run a brief straw poll to elect the best ever Batman villain? Strike while the iron is hot and all that, you know you feel it too...

Well, even after a number of years, I think I still have to say the best Batman comic story ever is The Killing Joke. My favourite villain is Harley Quinn.

IVY!

The only batman story I really got into was the Knightfall thing where Bane came in. I'm more of a Marvel guy though..

I think there was a kinda cool JLA thing were Ras Al Gule (or whatever his name is) got ahold of Batman's files for how Batman would take down the JLA if he needed to?

Best Batman comic would have to be Frank Miller's The Return of the Dark Knight.

I dunno about the best comic.... though I am partial to the one where Bane paralyzes him... I never saw that coming. He just picks up the bat, and throws him off a roof, end of discussion.

I don't have a single favorite villian, I'm partial to Killer Croc, Bane, the Joker, and like Jones, Harley Quinn.

I'd also like to put in a word for the little-known World's Funniest. This was one of the very few superhero comics ever to make me laugh out loud (REAL lol!). Batman's a major character, but the focus is on Bat-Mite and Mr Mxyzptlx. I did, I absolutely howled.

This is also the best Batman comic that I have read personally. Bear in mind though that I am a total geek for those alternate future/reality type storylines. I also enjoyed Year One, The Long Halloween, Hush, The Killing Joke and A Death in the Family.

I'd like to see Garth Ennis (Preacher) do a Batman series - that would probably rival, if not surpass The Dark Knight Returns.

Amen to that; Preacher is the only series I've ever felt the need to purchase and own (rather than just steal and borrow).

Did you check out his stint on the John Constantine series... that was pretty awesome stuff too.

You mean Hellblazer? Never saw any of Ennis' work there. Now I'll have to venture forth and find a comic book shop.

And yeah, Preacher is great. I've got a couple graphic novels (well, bound editions of complete storylines of the serials) from that title, and have really enjoyed it.

I'm one of those reluctant comic book readers. I stopped faithfully following any titles back when I was like, 12 or 13, but every few months or so, a friend will highly recommend something, and I'll end up buying it. Mostly it's independent graphic novels of varying quality, but sometimes I go for the "establishment" comics too.

I missed Constantine, but his rendition of the Punisher was also great - they used it for the latest movie.
