There's been a lot of activity on the changes we made yesterday. A lot of upset people (myself included) and a lot of questions. Let me do my best to address those concerns from what I know:

1) The maps are fugly. Yes, we know they are. I personally agree with you all on that point, but we had to change them to avoid potential copyright issues. Andydufresne, and Oaktown along with at least one or two users have already begun work on a revamp contest to find someone to come up with something better. We're hoping it goes up soon so we can get back to something more playable.

2) <so and so> must DIE! - no, they must not. Please do not attempt to arrange any sort of lynch mobs, class action law suits, consumer boycots or intestinal stranglings. These will accomplish nothing other than to piss off more people which wont solve anything for anyone, and trying to strangle someone may just make things worse - we don't want murder on our hands ;) Please let us handle any issues that are related to this.

3) Communication SUCKS, I'm leaving, you blow, how dare you, I want a refund - these are all fair criticisms and we are truly sorry that this panned out the way it did but again, it was something we did to avoid potential issues. All I ask is that if you have a specific complaint or suggestion please try to contact me. My inbox it flooding right now, but I will try to get to all of your concerns and address them as best as I can as soon as I can.

4) To those of you who have sent us best wishes, thank you. I wish I could thank you all personally because they mean a lot to us. I can only hope that these changes aren't too onerous and that we can continue to offer you a great game and an enjoyable site.

I know that this doesn't fix everything, but we are going to be taking steps to make things less ugly and messy. This thread is moving fairly quickly so please quote this message once every couple of pages so that future readers can keep up to date. I'm trying to read all the posts and am PMing several people to address their concerns at a pace it can be followed, but there are a lot to get through :)

I think all the talk about conceding winnable battles (cards, attacks, dice) to appease Hasbro is funny, especially considering the very first word on the home page:

"Risk all your troops..."

Yeah lets not antagonize the the people who can apparently shut you down with a mere threat.

I just wanted to echo the morning of everyone who will miss Middle Earth. As for the Classic map, my favorite map is 2.1, but I understand peoples frustration. In the meantime there is 98 other options to choose from.

On the terminology and lingo, ironically, I read about the changes all day and played my turns in two separate games and completely forgot about the changes. As if playing RISK for all those years has caused me interpret the game play in single mode, and even though it says 'reinforcements' or 'booty', I still think in terms of fortification and cards. I bet even they made drastic changes to the terminology I would gloss over these changes interpreting them in the form of tradition RISK terminology. Weird, maybe this is a sign I should stop playing... or that I spend to much time in an isolated desk thinking too much.

I am going to use this time to practice patience and trust the people who know more than I do about making maps will do very good job making the best of difficult situation.

I really don't see how they could threaten the exsistence of CC. For one, all territories were named for actual countrys/regions at one point or another (though not neccesarily at the same time). The card escalating sequence is definetly diffrent, the board is diffrent (both the borders and asthetics in the background), and as was previously mentioned, Hasbro DOESNOT have a patent on dice marked with dots instead of digets, nor the words "cards", "fortification" or "attack". So, I don't see a real threat, but I don't mind extensive measures being taken to ENSURE the exsistence of this sight. Besides, the fact that this amazing site has grown to a size to be recognized by a multibillion dollar corporation is pretty impresive if you ask my. I say KUDOS to Lack, Andy and Twill! =D> =D> =D>

All New "Classic" Map

Postby perrbear on Wed Oct 15, 2008 11:17 pm

I for one don't find the new classic map very classic at all. It lacks the esthetics of a real map. While I realize that there is need to avoid the copyright issues associated with Risk, I am disappointed by the compromise struck by CC. Could we still picture the world but put the Europe in the extreme west? Or perhaps look at the world upside down as some alternative maps in classrooms already do.

I for one don’t enjoy the new ā€œclassicā€ map as it provides me know geographical context. I want to see a similar world map that doesn't violate the copyright.

They took the map down, you're going to have to play on the current one until a new 'Classic' is made. hang tight, our Foundry elves are hard workers, they'll have something amazing, given a bit of time ;)

I'm kind of having a hard time believing this website is a threat to Hasbro. If anything, it might actually encourage people to go out and buy the boardgame.
At least that's what I've seen in the one month I've been here.

At least that's what I've seen in the one month I've been here.

Before joining this site, I had never played a game of Risk.

This past weekend, I played the computer game version of Risk released by Hasbro with my nephew. If it wasn't for CC, the topic of Risk never would have come up and we would not have played their game. This may have sparked more of an interest in my nephew (even though I kicked his ass!!) and might have a ripple effect in his circle of friends.

I am considering buying the board game version of Risk because I like the game and think it would be fun to play with friends and family in real life.

I have no idea if it would help, but I would certainly put my name on a petition to Hasbro letting them know that CC has, in my case, actually increased my interest in their game.

Maybe CC should offer to sell the board game version of Risk on the CC Web site. This might sound far fetched, but there are thousands of potential buyers here...

Even if Hasbro has the resources to bring CC to court, I don't think they could provide any evidence that CC has damaged them in any way. I am not educated in law, but to get money from CC, wouldn't Hasbro have to show a monetary loss?

I think CC has probably helped the popularity of Risk - not just in my case, but in almost every case. What could Hasbro gain in bring CC to court? I think they would hurt themselves by hurting CC.

I like the classic map as it is, with the shapes. It's still the old layout (WHICH HONESTLY IS THE ONLY LEGITIMATE CLAIM HASBRO COULD EVER MAKE ANYWAY). You guys changed the dumb shit (like the word "attack") and kept the stuff that would actually hold up in court as copyright infringement.

I study IP law, you guys are morons.

i didnt realize you had friends

Your also kidding yourself if you think you Hasbro couldnt hurt CC in someway. Whats happened recently is panic stations by CC. You don change your most popular map over night for no reason.

I think hasbro may soon launch its own site, much similar to CC. An ex cc'er told me around 4 months ago that he was working with hasbro in doing just that, not sure if thats part of teh reason!

That's interesting. Because Yahoo has two versions of Risk (licensed and endorsed) on offer on their site. I wonder how they'd feel if Hasbro went off and built a product to compete with Yahoo's license ... ???

t.e.c wrote:why is there still no official thread about what's going on?

a very good question also why all this discussion is being sent into this old thread of hulmey's is an extremely questionable decision by the powers that be on this site, as someone who up until recently was a member of team cc myself I'm extremely dissapointed in the way this is being dealt with - "when the going gets tough, the tough gets going" is not a solution.

We need an announcement with updates and we need the various key discussion points dealt with, there are a high degree of quality posts on this thread, I'm amazed these are being ignored and in effect unanswered, just because there is also spam and crap also being posted does not mean those of us that care about this site and have made positive suggestions should be ignored.

Also for an admin (Twill) to ask us the ordinary members to keep quoting his post every couple of pages is insulting in the extreme - this is the most important development on this site since I joined over a year ago and is exactly what announcements should be for - fine let this be a discussion thread but the updates from twill etc. should be at the top and locked so e all can see it - this is far more important than any competition etc.

I posted in private my reasons for leaving team cc but this latest example of whats going on, on high confirms any doubt I may have had that I made the right choice.

My issue is not what has happened, my issue is the way it is being dealt with, this should be the first step towards a solution to this current impasse.

well the replacement map is unplayable.. i have given it a shot but the residual comprehension that this is a former well known board, fights with the brains attempt to solve a wholly new intellectual challenge. As a result my brain completely seizes up.

So, we need the revamp very quickly and they are working on it now. New CLassic.
I am not sure that copyright will allow the map to be of the world at all though? We need some clarification on that i think please.

heheh i have found them to be absolutely awful since the change too mate!
