Starcraft II: Epic Fail?

Postby Frigidus on Thu Oct 16, 2008 10:31 am

For those that give half a shit

Three separate games? So I'm going to be paying around $150 to get the whole of Starcraft II? Are they going to have three separate expansion packs as well? They'd better come through on the "epic" bit, because if each of the individual campaigns doesn't have the same depth that the original Starcraft had it's a ripoff.

"[The second and third games] will be like expansion packs, but we really want them to feel like standalone products," said Blizzard's Rob Pardo.

Sounds like it may not be too bad.

And they're forcing you to buy one in order to play the other... I thought the video game industry was depression proof, the way the movie industry was in the 30's.

Still, didn't Blizzard do a good job with Warcraft III? I enjoyed it, anyway.

I don't think I'm going to be buying Starcraft II though. Not unless it gets rave reviews from my trustworthy nerdcore friends. You know, the kind of guys who will buy it the day it comes out just to be "that guy".

And no matter what, I'm not going to pick up the Zerg campaign. I was never good with them anyway.

I'm still on the fence about Starcraft II, might possibly buy the first one... just to see.

I don't plan on wanting to have to upgrade my comp to play it...

That's my only problem.

They did do a wonderful job with Warcraft III (I still play that occasionally), but the article concerns me in many ways. While the idea of diplomacy in the Protoss campaign intrigues me, the RPG Zerg campaign is worrisome. I think the worst part about Warcraft III was the cheesy hero system, and if they extended it further than that it might start to have some similarities to WoW. Don't get me wrong, WoW is OK, but I don't want it getting itself all over my Strategy games. That and the whole excruciating amount of money thing.

I'm a big Blizzard fan, I've played everything they made since the first Warcraft, but they can make mistakes. I'm worried.

All their Crafts and Diablos are one thing, but let's never forget Battle Chess, Battle Chess II, The Lost Vikings, Rock N' Roll Racing and Blackthorne.

I knew a guy who flunked out of college cause of Diablo II. There was a small contingent of guys in my fraternity who stopped joining us for games of RISK in order to hide in their rooms, smoke reefer, and click their mouses ad nauseum.

Maybe if Conquer Club had been around then, it would have saved them from academic ruination. Or perhaps have sped it up. Either way, I couldn't get into either Diablos. Same as WoW doesn't appeal to me or Second Life, or any of that stuff.

Is anyone here really into those kinds of games? What about them appeals to you? I'm honestly asking.

In S Korea they used to be mad about starcraft (pronounced Stah-Kuh-Ra-Puh-Tuh) and Diablo II. There was a TV channel devoted to the former, and PC gaming rooms on every street corner. When i was there some dude was found dead in a gaming booth, head on his keyboard, with an overflowing ashtray and a stack of instant noodle pots next to him - he'd been playing diablo for 110 hours straight, or something like that.

be careful Tonkaed...

Yeah, I remember reading that story. It's happened a few times now. With Counterstrike as well, if I recall correctly.

Having recently been dragged back into Diablo II by a friend of mine, I can try to answer. Somewhere around the 20th chaos run I took my first character on I began to wonder what I was doing, exactly, as this was some of the most repetitive stuff I'd ever done. More repetitive than WoW. I was building my character, sure, but what for? Using WoW as an example, you can fit more than a handful of people (to say the least) on one server, guilds allow much heavier social involvement, and it is more detailed in practically every way. The difference really comes down to the way in which you fight. I wouldn't say fighting in WoW is slow paced, but it certainly seems like it when you compare it to Diablo II fighting. PvP in D2 is ridiculously invigorating. People are blinking and jumping all over the place, the spells don't have very long recharge times, and the lower number of existing skills forces characters to specialize within their class. PvE isn't quite as action packed, but the usual RPG element of fine tuning your character's skills and armaments to perfection is still there. It's fun...but I don't get why some people are still playing it exclusively.
