I thought I smelled an alcohol thread....
+1 on Jameson.....

+1 on Laphroaig, my uncle has a bottle of 27 year old that he refuses to open.....grrrr
Of course he paid about $400 for it.

I'd love to get a tasting of a bottle of 1938 Mortlach, so if anyone has £7,500 they could loan me, that would be cool.

Also a +1 on Jack Daniels being a whiskey, and not a bourbon. I'm partial to the green label myself. In order to be Bourbon, it must be distilled from grain mash containing 51% corn and aged at least two years in a new, oak barrel. Whisk(e)y distilleries across the pond usually grab the used bourbon barrels from the U.S. to age their whisk(e)ys in.
Bourbon falls into the Whiskey family… so all Bourbons are Whiskeys… but not all Whiskeys can be Bourbons. (Kind of like all Porches are sports cars, but not all sports cars are Porches…)
(hopefully no one has posted this yet  )

So now is where I take advantage of the opportunity to segway into beer.....
Check out: http://www.harviestoun.com/OlaDubh/
Some of you may know of Harviestoun's "Old Engine Oil" ale.
Well, Ola Dubh (Black Oil) is the result of the collaboration of Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park distillery.
"It is the first ale to be aged in whisky casks by a named distillery, with each bottle being traceable back to its cask." Available are the 12yr, 16yr, & 30yr.
Not cheap. I've had the 12yr, and a 11.2oz bottle cost me $8.99. The 30yr bottle will run you ~$18 U.S.

It's nice to see the Iz is still wandering around the forums, and brilliantly slipping beer into a whisky/whiskey thread! Bravo! =D>

We expect a new beer review from you ASAP! I do enjoy getting schooled on my utter ignorance when it comes to beer and whisky/whiskey.

I need to add that I was quite pleasantly impressed by Wild Turky (funky rednecky name that you would assume would taste like something bubba cooked up out in the woods):

There used to be a bourbon which was on sale in UK supermarkets called "Rebel Yell" I think. It was tons cheaper than the name brands, and very passable. I've not seen it in the US.

being half Scottish i feel strange in a Whiskey thread as i don't like it(must be the English in me). i did buy my dad a bottle of Glennfiddich in 1988 before he died, it was like 18quid/$35 a bottle at the time( i was only 18 on a YTS(Youth Training Scheme)).

I'll refer you to a previous post of mine in response to a question from Da Gip:
Da Gip wrote:What IZ your favorite brand of 40 Malt Liquor?

Iz Man wrote:There's the "convenient store drunk" answer and then there's the "beer geek" answer......

First, the Convenient Store Drunk answer.

"Convenient Store Drunk":
Olde English 800 AKA: 8-Ball, Old E, OE, Ow-Ee
Origin: Miller Brewing Company (who bought the Olde 800 from Pabst)
ABV: ~7.5%
ImageThe choice of da OG's yo... With a great head, voluptuous J-Lo body, smooth finish, OE is the complete package. Classic old school label that announces you just bought 40 ounces, not once, not twice, but three times. OE has been praised by more rappers (without being compensated, see St. Ides) than every other malt liquor combined. Devotees past and present include Ice Cube, Eazy E, NWA, NAS, Beastie Boys, Alkaholics, TuPac and Dr. Dre.
(OG: Original Gangsta, for those not in the "know")

Iz Man wrote:Alright........... the beer geek answer: (I'm "upping" the geek factor here, I'm really not this bad )

That's a tough question, because believe it or not, Malt Liquor means something different depending on where you are (in the U.S.).
This is due to ridiculous legislation and/or laws that waste the time and money of John & Suzie Taxpayer. Go figure...... :?

For example: The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (I know, Texas, of all places) adopted Amendment §45.77 which states that malt liquor is not beer, but the term ale can be used as a synonym to malt liquor.......... but not beer. What constitutes a beer or a Malt Liquor depends on its alcohol content, Malt Liquor being over 6%*. Beer and malt liquor are distributed through different permit systems. It is, therefore, unlawful, for example, for a retailer licensed only for commerce in beer to possess malt liquor. This is, of course, to "protect" the consumer.

In Colorado, its different, at least in terms of what is malt liquor... hey, why not .
The Colorado Dept. of Revenue, Division of Liquor/Tobacco Enforcement states:
Section 12 - 47 - 103(19) CRS
"Malt Liquors" includes beer and shall be construed to mean any beverage obtained by the alcoholic fermentation of any infusion or decoction of barley, malt, hops or any other similar products, or any combination thereof, in water containing more than three and two-tenths percent of alcohol by weight. (A separate license is required to import fermented malt beverage, that which is not more than three and two-tenths percent by weight).

Certainly makes sense, doesn't it? =D>
3.2% alcohol by weight is 4.05% ABV.

So, if I'm in Houston, TX, perhaps I'd grab a St. Arnold OktoberfestImage
Or if I'm in Colorado, I'm definitely getting an Avery Brewery's Hog Heaven Barley WineImage

Wait, are all Europeans denied the pleasure of hanging on the stoop with the guys drinking 40s of OE?

That's a shame, man. Some of my best hazy memories are of pounding 40s and then something crazy happening, due to the planning session held during 40 consumption.

We also used to slam 22s during indie rock concerts in the alleys behind the venue. A 40 would take too long to down, and besides, being in the habit of keeping my 200 mL bottle of JACK DANIELS (which is the BEST WHISKEY ON THE PLANET) on me, slamming a 40 would just be too much.

While all single malts are a treat that should never be declined, I generally lean towards Bombay Sapphire... tonic & lemon. A few shots of tequila or mescal is always a great way to get my attention, but on several occassions a bottle of Wild Turkey has granted me the pleasure of making love to twins...

Rum works well with just about anything too.

Probably considered a travesty here but a fine whiskey based mixed drink.

Irish Qualude

1part Whiskey (whichever you like)
1part Frangelico
1part Khaluha
milk or Bailey's Irish Cream (I prefer milk; Bailey's makes it too sweet)
Shake with ice and strain into a highball glass

It's perfectly safe until your fifth glass; I make no promises as to judgement after that :-)

Have to agree with you here HC. I personally am partial to Rockstar, as it's more dry and not as sweet (in my opinion) as Red Bull. But usually I'll just stick to Red Bull.

This might be considered a travesty as well, but I thought I'd give you this recipe...

American Quaalude: 1 Quaalude pill.

Also, re: jaegerbombs. They are for girls. Just do a shot of rye followed by a can of PBR like everyone else.

For a dryer energy drink, try Red Bull sugarfree. Rockstar has too much ginseng in it. I get headaches from that crap. I'd rather just use caffeine for energy, FFS.

And yes, jaegerbombs are kind of fun, but best to indulge in behind closed doors. The tough guy image takes a huge hit if observed consuming such drinks in public. English guys, I know it's different there. So you can still do faggy stuff and be tough. But just so you know if you're visiting the USA, tough guys don't drink jaegerbombs.

The real mans way to drink is to drink an entire bottle of vodka and then hit the person next to you over the head with it.

When I first started drinking (at about the age of 15) I loved to drink Lord Sours.

Which is Lord Calvert and usually Squirt soda pop or some type of sour soda. I liked Amaretto's too.

When it came to slamming drinks, my all time favorite was called The Lunchbox:

For this drink you will need 1 ice cold large Beer Mug (must be large enough to set a shot glass on the inside)

One shot of Amaretto

Some orange juice

Your favorite beer on tap (Mine used to be Hamm's, but I don't even know if they make it anymore)

Carefully fill the shot glass with Amaretto and place in bottom of ice cold Beer Mug.
Carefully fill Beer Mug with orange juice just to the top edge of the shot glass, making sure you DON'T mix the Amaretto and the orange juice together!
Then poor tap beer slowly down the side of beer mug until full. If this is done just right you should have a layer of Beer on top of a layer of Orange Juice on the bottom and you should be able to see a full shot glass of Amaretto sitting in the middle of the orange juice layer. If it isn't done right, it will all be mixed together...but I would slam it anyway. Very few people can do the drink just right, it takes an expert bartender to make a Lunch Box, but I highly recommend them, especially on a hot day!

This vid clip has all the ingredients, but the mechanics are all wrong:

If it's caffeine content you are looking for, Rockstar beats Red Bull. Then again you could just have a Double Espresso or something called "Ammo".

Not if you buy one of the larger sizes of Red Bull. Who sponsored that list? Because an 8.3 oz can of Red Bull is hardly a fair comparison to a 16 oz can of Rockstar. If the amounts are equal, the caffeine content is almost completely equal. Which would still make Rockstar inferior, in my mind, because of all the other garbage thrown in.

However, if ginseng works for you, more power to you.

Also, wow. I'm going to have to try this Redline business.

It's hard to post charts in a forum, but the last column is Caffeine per ounce.

Assuming 16oz of each:
Redbull = 154.24
RockStar = 160.00

On a "buzz per swallow" basis, Rockstar still wins.

I dont know if this has been addressed (I only perused half the posts) but the words themselves I believe are Scottish and Irish, both derived from the latin and basically meaning "Water of Life". The Scots spell it Whisky and the Irish spell it Whiskey. The american version is taken from the Irish and includes the "e" while I dont believe any others do.....

I am solely a Rye drinker and have never met a Canadian Whisky I didnt like; normally I drink McNaughtons....in fact, I believe I am personally responsible for keeping them in business these last 30 years ;o)
