King Of / Doodle Europe - Initial Sketch

Postby Teflon Kris on Mon Feb 09, 2009 7:58 am

Latest sketch below.

This one is crayon coloured.

Another update very soon with sea, more doodles (now that I have a scanner). Looks like it'll be better to have the same shade for the whole bonus area.

I think it is a good idea but calling the middle east "war zone" might be considered politically incorrect.

I think it is borderline but can be backed up by facts. Also make it clear what is part of what continent! Love the idea!

i think that the name sound too fake (phony as holden caulfield would put it) They just seem like you tried to hard to make improper names

Does it have to be Europe? there seems to be too many european maps these days (europe, europa, Rail Europe, WW2, WW1 plus all the others currently in the foundry). Why don't you guys do somewhere with less maps, eg. asia, africa or south america. (I think Africa would be good)

Points raised so far -

1. Colour scheme - not too clear which bonus areas some of the territories belong to.
Action - Different colouring options after next sketch (see point 4 below).

2. Territory names - seem contrived.
Action - Further geographical discussion with my son to see what adjustments he comes out with.

3. Choice of region - already enough Europe maps.
Non-Action - We'll stick with Europe as we seem to have some interest and moving away from Europe would lose some
authenticity (as he has some geographical knowledge of European holiday destinations but little beyond that).

We do need more Africa maps though and that could be another project (we saw an excellent documentary about remnants
of an ancient River Niger civilisation).

Other points I would like to consider soon:

4. Whether the map should be: (a) coloured with pencil crayon; (b) coloured with felt tips; (c) coloured by graphics tinkering.
Action - Examples of all 3 options to be voted-on.

5. Writing options.
Action - Opinions to be consulted on this option. My son's handwriting is quite wild. It would be authentic for computer fonts to be used as he is IT-literate. Hand-writing would be unique as he is still mixing capitals and lower-case letters.

6. Adding doodles.
Action - Doodles to be drawn and scanned seperately (to ease tinkering later).

7. Adding a title
Action - Title to be written/drawn and scanned seperately (to ease tinkering later). More space for title than in the example.

8. The sea - was done with a quick fill - hand-drawn waves or something to be added.

8. Numerous gameplay questions.
Action - Bonuses, links etc etc to be discussed much further down the line. Ideas welcome at any time though.

Actions 1,2,4,5,6 & 7 to be addressed after scanning and posting of next sketch version.

Anyway, probably all stuff for 'New Projects' once a proper draft is available (I should have access to a scanner next week)

Put it together in like 10 mins. I can send the .psd to anyone, most of the hard part is getting a good brush.

Maybe you should create a new topic for the Africa map?

Great idea! - My frist impression when looking at your sample was that the font needs ro be changed to make it easier to read.

As for this:

I would suggest 'Jihad Zone.'

Sorry for the delay - currently off work so no scanner access for a week or two - alternative plans afoot though.

Cool idea. It's way too dark though. And I have a hard time reading the font.

You should also name Turkey, Chicken.... because as child I believed it was true.

First sketch now amended electronically to give a better initial idea, a couple of the above issues dealt with (or in part at least).

Second sketch and subsequent First Draft Proper to come next week:

That 'discussion' ended-up being hijacked into something else, hence my kangaroos comment.

Plus, it was in a different forum - this is an idea at this stage, a sketch with some dodgy icons etc. - nothing to present, just a basic idea for now. As you can see its definitely not an initial draft whatsoever.

The idea is quite harmless here, if work starts then it'll move. if anyone has similar ideas then that's up to them, they'll find this if they wish to. You can always post a reference in the other forum if you wish but you know what will happen if the kangaroo clan come along before and no development of the idea has taken place!

Have no fear - just the one map - there isn't even a glint in the eye for other maps.

Yeah, I think you're right to a degree, although I think 'Higher Napa' isn't so bad.
