Astrology joke or not?

Post by Gillipig »

I don't beleive in astrology it's to unlogical for me, but I couldn't help noticing how well it described me and several of my friends. A friend of mine is completely sold on this and I asked him (a bit amused) if he could discribe me and a couple of my other friends (who he never met) according to our birthdays? And he actually came pretty close. I didn't want to ask him more about it, and give him the satisfaction of waking my interest. :) So I ask you guys here instead; Is there anyone who could tell me more about this? And if someone can do it I would be glad if he tried to descibe me according to this: I'm born on the 9:th of February 1985. If you say things similar to what my friend did I might have to consider astrology as atleast a tool to describe people!

It works out so well because astrology describes people in the broadest of terms and includes several different though not contradictory features of which a person might have one, several or all. Chances are you'll be "pretty close" 99% of the time with that method.

I won't say exactly what he said to me, because then I wouldn't get anything out of this post! but he said things that were speficic enough to exclude everyone I know but myself! And the other guys he discribed with very good precision, you couldn't mix the different statements between all the persons!

There is also the well-known fact that some people are really good at guessing by interpreting clues you give.
"Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill."

Duane: You know what they say about love and war.
Tim: Yes, one involves a lot of physical and psychological pain, and the other one's war.

I'm not looking for respons from people who think the way I've always thought about astrology, (The godless Heaven way) but from people who has the opposite opinion, who think they can read a person through his birthday!

Snorri I understand your point but it would be better if you started your own thread were you harass astrologers without scaring them of my posts. Because I want their opinion! And I'm not gonna try to convince them they are wrong or assault them, I just want their opinion!

Have your star chart done... you will be very surprised how accurate it is.

If you know all the facts of your birth... date, time and location,
you can have a star chart made. It's a thing that never changes.

Then... have an expert who you've never met give you a reading
and although you are a stranger to them, you will be surprised
to discover that they know absolutely everything about you.

That's about all I can say, the rest is up to you.

I have never seen a scientific study that backed up Astrologic data. Generally, it is as was said above ... the characteristics are so general that they apply to most people. They will certainly apply "dead on" to quite a few. This is particularly true since we have an inherent tendency to discard that information which does not confirm whatever view we hold and more readily remember points of agreement.

One problem is that a lot of those claiming to use Astrology are plain outright frauds. On top of that, there are a good number who might not be intentionally fraudulant, but who just don't know what they are doing (on any level  ).

I myself don't believe Astrology, even from skilled practitioners, is meaningful, but there are intelligent people throughout time who firmly believe Astrology offers something. Some see it as true extra-earthly guidance. Some simply see it as good advice or "pure entertainment".

There are others who consider it "evil" for various reasons, mostly that it causes one to rely on something other than their own actions and faith ... that is, who they are is decided not by them, but "the stars".

Let me try.
Based on clues that you have given in this thread, allow me to try this:

No one quite understands you in the way that you think they should.
Only been with a handful of girls, maybe less.
Once upon a time you had a girl that you loved very much. But she friend zoned you hard... you never had the courage to ask her out.
Never done illegal drugs.
Every time you take a leak you urinate on the side of the bowl to elimate noise.
Care for a pet.
Always do the same ritual before you go to bed.
Rent or watch the same movie all the time.
Enviromentally conscious. At least to a point.
Sarcasm is something that you find funny, but not something that you would employ...

How'd I do?

Well it was fun reading your not so astrology based judgement "so you're right about the sarcasm thing =D> " but the personality you discribed wasn't someone I would recognize myself as, on top of that it's way more general then what he said.

Well to it's defence you should mention that it's close to impossible to prove anything involing the human psych, Freud's ideas can't be proved in a scientific way either. And I believe what Freud says.

How about I set up a few opposits here and you can guess which one of them I am.

Extrovert-Introvert
Boring-Charming
Fooling around-Serious
Strong minded-Weak minded
Cold-Sensitive
Childish-Grown up
Aggressive-Calm
Silent-Talkative
Annoying-Easy going
Harmless-Violent
Easily influenced-Stubborn
Active-Passive
Banging only-Romance
Sporty-Sport hater
Benelovent-Demanding
Caring for others-Selfcentered
Cruel-Kind
Career-Family
Dominant-Submissive
Rude-Polite

You'll have to try a lot harder than those generalisations Juan,
as you aren't even close.

The Star Chart and reading isn't something I was actively seeking,
in fact it wasn't even something I was aware of...
and as a total skeptic, I had no expectations.

I had been working with a shaman for about a year or so and one day
they said... "I'd really be interested in seeing your star chart."
I was like... um... "what's a star chart?" and they gave me a name
of someone to contact... if I was interested in persuing it further.

So I did it... when the day finally arrived, my reading lasted more than
two hours, the facts she gave me were very specific and the whole event
was recorded on casettes so I could review what was said later. It was a
lot to absorb in one sitting and I was genuinely amazed.

I don't expect science or anything else to explain it to me. It is what it is
and I don't mind the mystery of it at all, as there are is no shortage of things
out there that I don't understand.

Note to self, Snorri does not follow instructions well. I'm no more inclined to believe this stuff than the next guy, but I've witnessed enough strange things that I'm pretty sure it's no more naive to think stuff like this can be real than it is to automatically assume it's bunk.

None the less, the challenge set forth was very simple. If you believe this stuff, what can you discern from this guys B-day? As for the rest, save your smug, above it all crap. Trust me, doubting astrology doesn't make you any smarter than the rest of us because most of us, including the OP are inclined to agree with you. So, run along.

BTW, thanks however for the "great post" image. That will come in handy.

Yeah there is no real need to explain why astrology is unreasonable, because most people think it's bogus, much more interesting to hear what people who know this stuff has to say!
So far I haven't got anybody trying to analyze me.......

As far as I know Astrology is no life stance but is said to be influences that make people who they are, without puting believe in centrum. So astrology can be discussed on a practical level, If the statements are very precise and able to put in a system, so that you get very precise information on persons you don't even know, then atleast I'm getting interested, and thats what they claim they can do! So again if someone could try to give me a (astrology) read I would be very thankful.

Even thinking about I fail to see the connection between giant balls of gas that are thousands or even millions of light-years away, and any given person's personality.

Normally I enjoy your posts MeDeFe! but it's not interesting to go deep in how unreasonble it sounds to believe in it, the interesting thing is if it works or not!

 That reminds me of an ex-girlfriend. I'd do something that pissed her off and she'd say, "God, that is so like the Libra you are!"

After a point I gave her an ultimatum. Either she broke it down for me as to what was "so Libra about me" or she had to stop pulling that phrase out of her ass. Of course, as you might expect, she chose option C, "How 'bout I just keep you in the dark and go random astrologer on you when I damned well please, 'cause I'm your hippy girlfriend and that's how we roll."

Like I should have expected anything else.
