Road Trip [2/24/09: Draft 2 Page 1]

Not all of the territories are filled in... I will do it later once I find a good territory design.

Home Cities: Seattle, Los Angeles, Albuquerque, Bismarck, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, New York.

Major Cities: Eugene, San Francisco, Boise, Helena, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Fort Stockton, Oklahoma City, Lincoln, Denver, Rapid City, Minneapolis, St. Louis, New Orleans, Miami, Charlotte, Detroit, Washington D.C., Boston.

Large Cities: 80-100 of them.

Each player starts off on a "Home City" and tries to earn bonuses by conquering neutrals, like Age Of Realms.

Original Post
Here is my attempt at a very large-scale map. I've been wanting to do something like this for a while now.

Image

Note: I have only filled in a small portion of the territories. I have already planned out the cities I'm going to use, but I'm not going to draw them all unless I get some support from you guys on this.

The major cities will be: Seattle, San Francisco, Albuquerque, Bismarck, Houston, Chicago, Jacksonville, Washington D.C., and Boston.

The large cities will be: Eugene, Los Angeles, Boise, Helena, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Fort Stockton, Denver, Rapid City, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Oklahoma City (us Midwesterners come up with the most original names :P ), New Orleans, Nashville, Atlanta, Miami, Columbus, Detroit, Raleigh, Buffalo, New York, and Augusta.

I have about 100 small cities planned, but I'm not going to list them all here.

This is going to be like Age Of Realms. Each player will start off at a Major City (which I might rename to "Destination City" or something), and have to conquer neutrals and earn bonuses.

Here's the map I used to get the cities:

A big question I have is whether the road signs I have now will suffice. If not, how can I make them better without increasing their size too much? Other than this, don't mind the graphics too much. This wasn't done on Photoshop.

Thoughts? :)

The gameplay you have in mind sounds pretty good, I would play this game. But, I really don't like the graphics you've used for the roads and cities. I think they contrast too much with the map background and the squares are a little tight on the numbers.

i take it this is based on real roads and is that picture of America yours? I like the idea but you got to make sure the starting areas aren't to close together as well and one cities area doesn't have a major advantage over others

I like the idea but I feel it is to much like Oak's highway map

Okay, I changed the background to be a simpler version of the states. The signs are what I'm wondering about, mostly. I need to make them as small as possible, but look like actual road signs. How are they now?

Not really, I figure that most of these cities have roads between them anyway.

I put all the starting areas and major cities on the map so you can see how they are spaced.

Route 66? Maybe, but that's only one area of the U.S. and has totally different gameplay. ;)

[Moved]

This map has been moved into the Ideas subforum, as it does not currently meet the criteria for a Working Draft:
Drafting Room Guidelines

To be considered a Working Draft a project must be more than just an idea; a Draft should have a clear thematic focus, a plan for how the gameplay will work, and a basic image which should include:
  • 1. Territory Labels - temporary names or numbers will suffice, and are always open to change.
    2. Borders/Paths/Impassables - it should be made clear where territories do/do not connect.
    3. Bonus Areas - where combinations/groups of territories will award a bonus, this should be indicated on the map.
    4. Legend - speculative bonus values and explanations of any attack rules or gameplay features.
Draft images should not be larger than 630x600px (small image) or 840x800px (large image).

Boy, an ugly draft! But sketches are ofc sketches. Not to... um... be negative or anything, but do we really need another US map? Otherwise, your ideas seem interesting. That is, some kind of roadwarrior theme. Might not be at all what you're going for, but Mad Max-style? I'd go for it. ;)

It was just an idea... I'd rather see Industry go through the Foundry than this, to be honest. ;)

Hey! Don't drop your idea! It has great promise. Really. For me, personally, it's just that there are quite a few US maps out there already, so yet another would need some kind of extra twist.

I'd love to see some development! Dunno, 1920's Oil Rush map based on highways, 1930's gangster map, today kind of Grand Theft Auto map (with coppers and crooks for bonuses), tomorrow post-apocalyptic theme - any of those or something completely different. Just saying a US map needs something extra, IMHO, to make it (since there are so many out there already).

I think you should keep at it and consider what you really want to make with this map, what idea/fantasy you'd like to "sell" to the gamers. If you find something YOU like, I'm sure people would go crazy about it. Other than just the US and roads.

Just a newbie, so feel free to ignore me. Go with your vision. Win us over!

*EHEM* omaha is WAY bigger then lincoln, omaha is almost a million person city, while lincoln is only a couple hundred thousand i think, plus Lincoln is boreing, noone wants to travel there, but many people travel to omaha for the zoo(best in the world ;) ) and the college world series.

Other then that *little* issue, this looks cool, keep going! :D
