Old Map Ideas Thread, Closed!

Postby Jota on Wed May 10, 2006 10:27 pm

I'm starting this thread as a place where people can trade ideas for maps. If you've got a good idea, but don't currently have the time/motivation/skills to pull it off right now, feel free to post it here for someone else to use if they want. If you see something here that you'd like to try working on, just drop a note to let everyone know.

[Edit] Here are some of the specific ideas that have been offered so far:

I'll kick things off myself:

ThƩah is the setting for the 7th Sea role-playing game. It's like a swashbuckling fantasy version of 17th century Europe. It has seven main countries that I think would work fairly well as Risk continents: Avalon, Castille, Montaigne, Eisen, Vodacce, Ussura, and Vendel/Vestenmannavnjar. Each one of those can be easily broken down into smaller sub-regions for use as "countries".

You can find one map of ThƩah here; there are also links there to maps of the individual nations. I'm sure a bit of work with Google would turn up plenty of other map images to work from as well.

Now I was curious (george) and I decided to simply search google for "Fantasy Maps". Quite an interesting selection has popped up.

Link

Obviously one would have to check copyrights, and get permission from authors if they were user created, but at least some of the layouts could spark ideas and interests into other areas.

One map i was considering doing that would probably have some decent interest would be the map of springfield, the town in which the simpsons live. I looked up some maps, and it might be interesting, it would mostly be fun to know the different places on the map... it looks like a bit of a daunting task though. I put it on the backburners, but someone do it if you want a project and challenge.

if any of you have played advance wars 1, 2, or DS, i think one of those would be a good map

Map idea

Postby jay_a2j on Fri May 12, 2006 3:08 pm

How about a map of our gallexy....from Mercury to Pluto (maybe even though in the sun) Each planet could be divided up into segments. Sun could be in the center of map (most men for holding) Having all planets surrounding the sun. Just a though... as I am no programer.
THE DEBATE IS OVER...

Hec... You don't need to program anything... The XML is easy... I've never done much programming in my life  ... But hey... If you have an idea, try and create it! (Although there is already a space map created by Jota)

What about a map of The Moon?

Or mayhaps of some kind of alternate Earth, like the Sixth World map from Shadowrun.

I got a link to that map right here.

^^^

Has been suggested a few times, the utter lay out of the continents would be horrendous...

Back when I first started thinking about making CC maps, one of my earliest ideas was for a City Park. I think the idea still has merit, but it would require better drawing skills than I possess to do it justice.

Some of my thoughts for continents and the countries in them included:
  • Field: Here you've got your big grassy area, with things like a bandstand, a gazebo, places for sunbathing, the big historic statue (of a WWII two veteran riding a horse, no doubt), possibly with park with benches and walkways and the like.
  • Playground: This might include a swingset, slide, sandbox, merry-go-round, see-saw, and similar implements of juvenile recreation.
  • Woods: Here you'd have the nature paths, perhaps a campground, lovers' lane (overlooking the lake/pond/cliff/what-have-you), and other similar areas.
  • Pond: Probably a smaller continent, with areas for watching/feeding the ducks and for sailing toy boats.
  • Sports: Maybe soccer, maybe baseball. Baseball would lend itself better to divvying up, I think. Plus bleachers, the scorekeepers/scoreboard/refs, clubhouse.

If you want this idea, feel free to use or not use or replace any of that stuff I just mentioned, as you like. Have fun with it.

The idea mentioned above is an interesting twist on RISK. **Smacks Jota with a trout for being creative** ;-).

I think this map could be rather enjoyable, though like Jota said it would benefit greatly from appealing graphics, perhaps even more so than the usual map. This kind of idea brings me back to the days when my friends I and would play 'Guns' and 'War' at elementary school during our daily breaks. It surely would be worth a shot, though I wouldn't model the park after an specific one (or at least widely known specific one). It's an intriguing idea, and I like. One problem I would forsee would be making the map too 'kiddy'. But with proper care and focus I think it could be come a well loved niche map, if ever made.

Hey Jota, in order for this thread to be what you want it to be, maybe you should see about it being promoted to Stickitude.

I hadn't even realized that Twill's post was meant as a map idea! I thought the mod job (not squad) had finally got to him and he had gone nuts!.

I am all for new maps, even the weird ideas. Unfortunatly, I am no good at it, so I don't. But a map using the periodic table would be interesting.

I am one of you Acetone, I have ideas and can work them out to map idea but making it to go on this site is to much, and to hard for me.
