Sadly I have to say that your assessment is pretty fair :|

Should have been changed during Beta then?

Have any maps actually been changed after reaching the Beta phase (other than spelling errors and XML mistakes)? Just curious.

Changes were made to the map during Beta, and as a result the map is well-balanced, and offers some strategic choices (ie. go for the +1 bonuses or an opponent). In that respect the map plays as it was intended - the question here is about relative merit... There are several maps that I would rate lower than Wales...

As for maps being changed post-beta, the Das Schloss fiasco prompted it's introduction, and the Beta phase is more about ensuring that the map is error-free and reasonably balanced than getting it to the top of people's playlists ;-)

Funny, I actually like Battle for Iraq pretty well now. I think it is a map that requires several playing to get used to. My bottom 3:

Arms Race - I hate the cooperative/backstabbing element that is required for multiplayer on this map. It encourages some of the worst behavior in games.

Tamriel - Just so ugly. Nothing wrong with the gameplay, but the graphics are painful.

Conquer Man - worst. map. ever. Hate it, and I'll admit I am terrible at it too.

I think that people has been influenced by the first answer, so, I think that are judging so hard battle of Iraq. It's a really good map.

My bottom three.

1. Pacman. Absolutly awful. No sense to me

2. Space. Another fail. any sense to me, and a waste of a very interesting idea

3. The worst graphics ever: Brazil. I know that is being revamped right now, confirming my concept.

is that where that horrible/non-sensical gameplay comes from? one game on it was enough for me. it was such a horrific experience, i blocked it out...-0

There are many maps I haven't yet played (most of those being mentioned here in fact) due to them looking like they won't play well. The Wales map I did play enough to cross map it, quite sure I won't be coming back though.

IIRC there are changes being made to the Eastern Hemisphere map.

ConquerMan - Although this could be any large, sprawling map.

Age of Merchants - Although this could be any map where you need to collect things, or find a castle, or get to the middle to the special portal.

Classic Art/Shapes - THIS is why I joined?
