Oh, this is just basic chemistry really. You know, sodium burns brick red, potassium burns purple, etc.

Oh yes, I see what you are saying.

An interesting trick I learned: Take a garden hose an stick it in a copper pipe with holes drilled into it and one end closed, then stick that in the fire. The copper burns green, and the garden hose gives off a bunch of different colors, including purple, (I suppose that's the potassium). The best part, is that that the hose doesn't burn, and you can use it over and over again.

Flames change color based on the heat and chemical that is being burned. Actually, this is how they make fireworks.
