Cyan or Teal ??

Postby Davie.K on Mon Nov 23, 2009 9:51 am

It's been bugging me a little while now,why do most people i play use the word teal when it is cyan....It even has a C next to it when you have the letters showing. Is this an Americanism ? :? :?

I don't know, but I agree with you. It's not teal. Teal is a greenish color. Although cyan isn't really accurate either. Cyan is blue. It's turquoise, if anything.

My printer has 2 cartridges with similar colors to our blue and cyan. The color names there are "cyan" and "light cyan".

Color code reads "C". What about Silver? Slate? It's not grey.

Right, but the letter "g" was taken by "green" before this site handled 8-player games.
Just from a computing point of view, at the dawn of desktop graphics (circa 1980), with the RGB monitor you could get essentially eight colours by combining red, green, and blue. With no colours turned on, you got black. With all of them on, you got white. Each colour could be turned on individually, and then you could turn them on in pairs: red plus green gave yellow, red plus blue gave magenta (commonly called pink, which bugs me, because I learned that pink was red and white), and green plus blue gave cyan. Later systems allowed for sixteen colours by additionally turning all the colours on at partial intensity and lightening them up, with most of these new shades called "light red" and the like, though "grey" was used, since not even IBM had the nerve to call a colour "light black".

Teal in my mind is the colour of the head of a mallard drake (male duck).

Two of my regular teammates fight over this very issue constantly. It's very distracting to the overall game. I think we need to move this to Sugs and Bugs to get a proper answer and thereby reduce the amount of distracting conversation in my team games.

By the way, cyan was invented by McGill University in 1912. Teal was invented by McGill University in 1932. Perhaps that will shed some light on this important issue.

Maybe you should look at the link I just posted where an admin explains the name of all the colors CC uses.
Or you could go to the suggs and buggs forum and have the same link given to you. Either way.

It doesn't matter. It's not like there is a cyan and a teal so it can be confusing. I'm pretty sure everybody on the site can read "cyan" or "teal" and know which player is being talked about. The same with "slate", "grey", or "gray". It's not a critical issue.

Suggs and Bugs can't do anything about it - it's a matter of what people say, not an in game glitch. I personally use cyan because it's what is listed in the game, but I was raised that the colour in question is known as teal, so I'll sometimes say that instead. It's altogether irrelevant though, as you should be able to figure out which player a teammate is referring to regardless.

I too have wondered about this. I've called it "teal." I've called the colour "cyan" (umm... after a couple of glasses of wine "cayan"... not really sure about that one.)

But I have come to this conclusion: the "C" next to the player of this colour means "crayon of your choice that is close to light blue."

Cheers.

I did a side-by-side with the expanded "CC"-color and the shades of cyan.

It was actually closest to Robin egg blue. :-s

Well Im certainly not an expert, and my memory isnt getting better either. That said,I belive all colours come from 3 primary colours and 3 secondary colours.I believe Red,Green and Blue are primary.Magenta(pink),Cyan and Yellow are secondary. In any event when light is passed thru a prisim these are the 6 colours that make up all colours. Not sure but I think grey or black is the prescence of all 6 colours.

Red, Blue and Yellow are the primary colors. Green, Orange and Purple are Secondary.
I prefer to think of it as Aquamarine and teal is the color of Russia on the W 2.1 map,
but Cyan is fine too.

The question of primary colours can be answered a number of ways. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primary_color.
