I'm all for pushing the boundaries (I think that is what life is all about)---in appropriate, or perhaps better termed, adequate venues. I don't think Conquer Club serves as an adequate vehicle for any dramatic change when it comes to culture, outside of "gaming" culture.

We're here to have fun, play some games. There are probably a bananaillion more adequate places for testing the boundaries of the Holocaust. ;)

I don't know that I can agree about the thread not serving a purpose. As long as we are all polite this is an interesting exploration into how we collectively handle these types of issues.

So I'll leave BMW alone and move on to something more directly applicable. What if my Sig shows a picture of a mushroom cloud and says "American ingenuity...ending wars one big boom at a time"

I imagine that would offend people of Japanese decent. (I have a Japanese friend with this on a shirt. It pisses his parents off to no end). Would that get me in trouble? Or is it okay because it "saved lives" and wasn't Nazis doing it?

For my part, I think there's still a significant difference in that it can at least be ARGUED (not necessarily agreed upon) that the dropping of the two atomic bombs did in fact save lives. The gassing of civilians in Germany in no way saved lives. If that makes sense.

There is a distinction, but it may not be a difference. The Nazi used gas to kill civilians in order to exterminate select classes and races of people. We used the atomic bomb to exterminate civilians to terrorize a nation into surrendering, but more importantly to let the Soviets know that we had such a weapon and terrorize the soviets

I don't see much difference..

okay how about this one.

mpjh you have a picture of what appears to be an outhouse as your avatar. My family is from rural Appalachia and frankly I find your avatar offensive to my people. To whom should I file my complaint?

Okay that one's reaching but it makes a point. At some point in time/history/culture anything and everything could be said to offend some group. Why does it seem that conquer club has a special soft spot for the holocaust? Admittedly it was a horrible horrible thing, but aren't there other horrible horrible things out there? Yet I see the nazi/holocaust thing over and over on these threads.

how about we just have the person with the offensive sig/avatar and the complainer duke it out in 15 random games with the winner getting to either keep the sig/avatar or have it removed? :P

Actually, mpjh only has that avatar because he lost a bet with me.

The bet was whether or not the nuclear bomb tests in New Mexico were invented at McGill University in 1862. Of course, I won, and I thought it fitting that he make his avatar that outhouse as a memorial not only to the changing landscape of warfare in the 20th century, but also as a reminder that changing the landscape of warfare was invented at McGill University.

It was a bet concerning whether or not every sport in the world was invented at McGill University, which, of course, they all were.

That was a dumb bet by mpjh.

i would have been agreeable to this, -- for all the grief i have gotten over this, i am happy to see that some intelligent conversation has taken place, in hind sight i admit my mistake was trying to be funny, but regardless my intention was to bring attention to this, it is unfathomable to me that some people either discount what happened, or deny that it occurred.

This trolling discussion, created solely for the purpose of hurting the families and survivors of Nazi terror is disgusting. Trying to equate the poison gas used to kill millions of Jews, communists, homosexuals, Romani, and others thought undesirable by the Nazi with an simple rat exterminator or an outhouse near a nuclear site is repugnant. CC should not allow this on its site. It is a product of bigoted attitudes expressing hurtful and outrageous statements solely for the purpose of upsetting a specific group of survivors and families of survivors.

mpjh, i will not let you draw me out with your baiting, so that you can have me bestowed with a vacation , you have a history of this. I do not understand how you can accuse someone of bigoted attitudes, without ever having any direct contact in any way with an individual, mod or not you are not omniscient. How difficult would it be for you or any other mod to merely send a pm asking for a little clarification before issuing warnings, or using the forums for your own personal pulpit to express your views, rather than engaging in an adult conversation.

Azzezo, you have made who and what you are clear, there is no need for further clarification. You are a race-baiter of the worst kind; drawing on icons of Nazism to hurt and insult. You don't care either.

Just Fucking lock it then. You do have that ability don't you?

The issue is over, the Avatar has been changed, and everyone has voiced their opinion.

Stirring the pot is stupid and futile.
