Dealing with crap strategy that screws you over

Postby WestWind on Sat Jan 23, 2010 5:19 pm

First off, this is my first post and I'm very new to this game, so please be gentle ;)

Anyways, my concern is how to deal with terrible strategies that opponents use that catch you by surprise because you didn't think they would be dumb enough to do it. The game that brought this subject up is below:

http://www.conquerclub.com/game.php?game=6277308

Basically, I held the Maize Silos while Red held all of BananaLand, Sugarland, and some of the Dairy Farms. Green and Blue formed a truce against Red due to his large amount of control, and in response I requested a truce with Red along the Maize Silo/Dairy Farm border in order to save us both some troops. In response, Red devoted the vast majority of his troops the next turn to push through my defenses and take over the Maize Silos instead of focusing on the real threat. The result was I was reduced to two territories which were quickly taken over by Green, and Red was so far spread out that his defense was easily crushed by green and blue, and he's now confined to Bananaland with a whopping 7 troops.

I usually play under the belief that players will do things that benefit themselves, instead of suiciding in silly ways. Obviously this doesn't work out very well sometimes, so I'm wondering what I can do in order to adapt/deal with situations like this in the future. Also, if anybody sees anything I could have done better in the game I'm talking about, let me know.

Anyways, I rated Red accordingly, but other than that I don't know what I could have done. I'm fine with unpredictable strategies that actually work, but I have no idea what to do against unpredictable strategies that are terrible and make no sense.

If you are going to lose a game because one person is powerful, its sometimes best NOT to request an alliance against that person and hope others do the work for you, however there comes a point where you have to.

Its timing. In general the first person to request a truce/alliance against someone AND have someone agree to the truce or alliance is the best off, so by waiting and allowing them to negotiate peace with the strongest person, you waited too long.

I can't tell you a magic forumla for when to request these things, its feel, the more games you play the better you will get at it if you pay attention closely to the games, but I've played a lot of games and I still cock it up sometimes.

Alright, that makes sense. I'll try and watch for those situations in the future.

I'm not really annoyed over the fact that red ignored the truce request, but that he instead decided to (basically) suicide into me for no real reason.

Anyways, thanks for the truce tips :D

I don't think there is any good way of dealing with people making stupid mistakes or committing suicide. Just hope, pray, and sacrifice a virgin to the dice gods at new moon. And if you think you can pull it off, nudge the morons towards hitting someone else.

Also, consider joining a clan. You'll have the opportunity to play people to pay more attention to the game if you do that.

well, the best thing to do is really hope someone doesnt hit you too hard

the next thing, is act in a way as to try to get them not to hit you too hard

the third is well...try to win the next game if they hit you too hard.

there are many other things you can do...but usually to no avail...such as yelling, accusing of cheating(though if they are....please do so), quitting....but really in the end....move on. You cant win them all, and its silly to try to. Win the ones you should win, and some you shouldnt....and have fun with the game.

Yeah, all good advice. I'll consider checking out a clan as well. If you want a good laugh, take a look at the chat log of that game and see all the **** that went down

Sign up for the Society of the Cooks. We'll teach you how to play the basics, then you can branch out from there.
