Why is it a question? The best movie was AVATAR. It was the highest grossing movie ever, and looked just fine in 2D, if not quite as epic as in 3D.

It was pathetic. As was Inglorious Basterds.

District 9 and Avatar were pretty good. Not a great movie year, though. Wolfman looks epic…

Inglourious Basterds, 500 Days of Summer, The Hangover, Avatar probably the best out of the ones I've seen, haven't seen District 9 yet.

No truely amazing films.

OK, we seem to have a substantive disagreement. I thought the depiction of the extraordinary stress the fighting men in Hurt Locker went through, and how that affected their return home represents a untold facet of the war in Iraq. Sure, I've read the issues with some of the more technical things the movie didn't do well. Is the fact that a 50cal didn't make as big a boom as you might like your main quibble with that movie? Does that really make it "pathetic?" Dish on it, but it wasn't Armageddon. I also thought Basterds was fantastic, but this one first.

I just thought it was too psychotic. i.e. it was supposed to be inside the soldier's head and all, but was a bit over-the-top and I didn't really like Jeremy Renner.

I suppose pathetic was a bit harsh; I just didn't really like it.

Basterds was just stupid, not very funny IMO. Huge Tarantino and Pitt fan, but it was a bombout.

When you calculate in inflation, it doesn't come close. 1. Gone With the Wind, 2. Star Wars...21. Avatar. http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

Up and G-force.

But, it has been a good couple of years since I have seen anything with more than a PG-13 rating.. and roughly 10 since I have seen anything in a movie theater...

Why is it when I change the adjuster dohickey to 1939, the year Gone With the Wind was realeased, it says that it made about 46 million adjusted out of it's near 200 million unadjusted? It's the case for all of them, really. Something tells me that this tool here isn't all that it claims to be, as there's obviously some funky math going on.

The Hurt Locker was awesome.

Brothers was an awesome and very good depiction of PTSD.

Back then, it cost you a dime to get into the movies. Today it costs somewhere between $6 and $10 depending on the time of day and whether or not its in 3D (another reason why Avatar is the top grossing movie not adjusted for inflation).

Edit: Should have put this in earlier, but many of the movies on the list had several rereleases, such as Star Wars, Gone With the Wind, and Sound of Music. Another website concluding with the same list http://www.filmsite.org/boxoffice.html

how do they account for population? and as for the inflation formula they use, inflationary information is WAY off base, and you can pretty much come up with whatever answer you want, akin to global warming scientists

I'm not saying that they aren't good movies. I'm pointing out the reason why almost nothing but recent movies are on the top 10 highest grossing movies, is because of inflation not because they are so much better than the classics like Star Wars.

he is saying avater isnt the highest grossing cause of ticket prices....well any movie now a days is gonna be higher priced than way back when sultan of surreal was cool so therefore are you gonna say no new movie can earn that title because of inflation differences? seriously think...

i mean yes the classics are great and all ...but with advertising and stuff now adays people are gonna get more exposure than back in the 1976s

but star wars was awesome
