New Map Idea - DNA [Vacation]

Postby WidowMakers on Fri Mar 02, 2007 4:43 pm

This is a pretty good representation of 2 base pairs and the phosphate sugar ladder structure of DNA. What do you think?

Right now...this idea doesn't...hm appeal to me.

Maybe if you make it a little more..hm...interesting with a theme. What if we are viruses...trying to spread? And infect dna?

2 questions:

Is it one for each sugar and phosphate molocule, or 1 for them all?

Also, when you control a pair, do get 8 on top of the 4 and 3 bonuses, or is it 8 total?

While I appreciate that you're trying to come up with new ideas, this map doesn't really interest me. I just don't have any interest in fighting over DNA.

*grins* i agree- though that might just happen sometime in the not-so-distant future

i think that if you want to, and some people like it, go ahead...but i personally don't like it...it might grow on me if you keep working on it...

It doesn't look very visually appealing, it looks like a skeleton of a map with the countries not put in. It looks like it has decent gameplay, but if you can get more things resembling borders on it then i think it'll look pretty good

I like it. I like the originality.
I also like the idea of making the armies a bunch of warring viral factions, or somesuch... (like andy suggested) The visuals definitely need some work, those colours are a bit... hmm... acid?
And the key could be a bit clearer.

Hmm I'm not sure, I want to like it but it does seem v confusing.

Just one other thing: this is going to sound v geeky and I'm probably completely wrong but aren't the phosphates and sugars the other way round?! Or I might just be getting them confused!

You biochemistry majors could use some work :P The deoxyribose sugars and the phosphate groups' colours are wrong - it should be the other way around.

It's good, but you've got the phosphates and sugars mixed up.

Good in principle. Keep working on it!!

Not sure about the gameplay as I think the borders are slightly too few. I appreciate this is because of the borders. I'd need to do some brushing up before I was certaing... but I'm pretty sure you can work in a cross-link in there whilst remaining scientifically accurate. This will let you at least link a base to the one below it. If you've got some kind of biology background, you might know what I'm talking about - otherwise it might sound like rubbish. I'll get my flatmate to look at this as well, as I suspect he's more up on DNA structure right now than me, it's been a while!

On closer examination, it looks there's a few more mistakes. Keep a couple of things in mind:

1) Methyl (-CH3) groups should not be on this DNA molecule, and even if they were, not at the positions indicated
2) I think Adenine is correct, but most of the others have some kind of structural mistake
3) If you're going to keep the bases' carbonyl groups in their double-bonded form, don't use the hydroxyl (-OH) groups at all. Physiological pH does not allow for hydroxyl groups to exist, most of the time, anyway.

Wikipedia has a pretty good picture on DNA structure. Hope this helps!

I stopped working on this map a while ago. I have had other maps and not too many others liked this one. For now you can post your comments but it might be a while, if at all, before i make changes.
