Incidentally, folks, it turns out that the only human you can usefully "sacrifice" is yourself. LaVey often uses confrontational language (such as his calling his teachings "satanism" when it isn't anything to do with satan, really). He begs to be reviled and misunderstood, I think as a sort of test, to see who has the will to move past that and find out what he's actually taking about.

Our friend here seems to have picked up on the being deliberately offensive part of this, if nothing else.

LaVey's tenets are, strictly neither a faith nor in any way religious, but a philosophy.

It is still a religion with its own rituals and a church. Anyway, all religions are a philosophy, a way of life, a way of thinking. And, yes, I have read the Satanic Bible, it is very enlightening, and the chapter on human sacrifice it is more or less not about who to sacrifice, but how it can heighten your magic's power.

I separate laVey's writings from "religious" ones in that I don't remember him claiming any divine inspiration, just a realisation. I could be wronmg, it must be almost 30 years since I read him.
