Listen to this advice.chemefreak wrote:I am an attorney in the real world and assist clients with these kind of decisions all the time. I usually try to recommend that they name their legal entity something that does not define them too much. For instance, if you were to name your legal entity Virtual Business Synergism, and then after a few years you decide you would rather do landscaping, this business name doesn't seem to make too much sense. So what I normally recommend is naming your business (the Inc., LLC, etc.) main company something simple such as Chemefreak Enterprises, Inc. or Virtual, LLC or "your last name" Ventures, Inc. Then, at the same time, apply for a trade name that incorporates the nature of the business, such as Virtual Business Synergism. Then should you decide to switch trades, you can simply cancel the tradename and get a new one, without having to set up a completely new entity or go through the headache of changing the name of your entity (getting a new tax id, changing it on loans, etc.) Just a thought. Good luck with your venture. I am not licensed in Canada, just fyi
On a serious note, I agree. Except, based on experience, I would advise against using your name directly in the name. Initiallys are OK, but if you use more, its too easy for folks to track you down... forever. Its tempting, particularly if you live in a place where you get tax discounts or a release from certain fees if you use your name. The reason is because you want to be sure and keep most personal accounts well away from private stuff and if you have your actual name, you will never be able to fully divest yourself. This could be a problem if your business fails or if you are a success and decide to sell it later. It seems nifty that you get all these "free credit" offers in your name, but its not so fun to get 20 phone calls a day. I am not exaggerating, this happened to us, just because we filed for a business name we never even used. Because our name is in the title, they can easily track us down. (maybe part of why I am a tad paranoid about linking real info to my user name here).bedub1 wrote:Listen to this advice.chemefreak wrote:I am an attorney in the real world and assist clients with these kind of decisions all the time. Also you can check godaddy.com for domain names. Whatever you name your business, you will probably want to ensure you can get businessname.com.
Wait, what? Since when has this thread not been serious?PLAYER57832 wrote: On a serious note
