Internet themed map

Postby sctjkc01 on Fri Jan 29, 2010 7:04 pm

I used the forum search for any "Internet themed" map within the Foundry, but I only found one that was shot down. Didn't find one that was at all "Computer Themed." I figured that there could be some sort of Internet node map using an individual node as a region.

If that would be too complex a map, I'd be just as satisfied with making up some sort of virtual map that would be like a representation of clients, ISP's, and Internet regions. Med/Large bonus for holding the entire Internet "Continent".

As an idea, I think a Hacker War might be a good theme for 'conquering' sites on the Internet. There's actually a lot of sci-fi stuff out there that we're all familiar with, particularly William Gibson's novels. ICE, evil AIs, even real-world corporate SWAT teams... lots of good ideas to use I think.

Oh yeah, I'm familiar with those novels... not really. Hacker would be cool though. 8 hacker starting positions and then a bunch of other stuff that I can't think of. I think the idea is worth pursuing tho...

Have the internet backbone and major search engines as territories. maybe wikipedia as a huge continent. Taking over websites would be cool.

Perhaps like the map for XKCD?

You would have to do your own version, and you could probably update it, but using the same sort of idea could make a neat map of the Internet.

I'd like to see like nodes on this background with branches going off into nowhere and stuff.

That map is great! Made me laugh. I'd love to see this get developed.

Was actually pursued for a few weeks by someone, at the blessing of XKCD's author. It's in the recycling bin.

As for taking a hacker angle, there's plenty of interesting tidbits about the internet you could draw on. Consider the 12 backbone DNS servers, The Vetted, the entire infrastructure making the internet possible, the intricate nature of IP addresses, etc., and there's a TON of source material out there. If you want a subject matter expert, I happen to be a geek in the matter (see previous sentence).

You could probably use that exact map if you talked to the guy from xkcd.
Note: XKCD is an improper use of xkcd. Caps should not be used unless starting a sentence. Xkcd is not acceptable.

Sorry... just had to quote the About page.

I would like to see a game like this. However the problem would be shrinking that map to a workable size. It's huge and large maps are not supposed to exceed 800 px...

I say we adapt my black hole refrigerator map, get rid of the fridge and the rest of it is the internet.

Shouldn't be too difficult to work out the gameplay.

it looks better when you use paint to make overlapping rounded rectangles and done in appropriate colours.

I like the idea of a hacker based map, though, and this is slightly off topic, what could be fun is a map based around a single system, and all the security around it. Ports coming in from the bottom and the main system at the top, and all the defenses (Firewall, Antivirus ect.) in between.

you could divide the map up into national, regional and local telecommunication grids for overlapping bonuses and have secure (super neutral) nodes on the local grids that anyone on the regional grid can attack, these 'backdoor' nodes can grant access to the secure networks beyond...
