we all know how the points earned are calculated, but what I was wondering was: is it the score you have at the time when the game ends or at the time the game started? because I have the impression that some people hold off finishing the game right before finishing off the last opponent sometimes

I figured maybe they're waiting until their ranking is lower (for example if they have some other games going in which they are definitely losing) ?

Yes - I've known players to do this on occasion - it's your instantaneous point difference at the time the game ends that decides how many you get. Also, I'm loving the Dexter avatar Just finished Season 1 on netflix. Good show.
