After countless arguments with others on this site, I decided to tone it down a bit. We will just simply never agree. But we can still appreciate each other's cultures.

I lived in San Diego for about 14 years and during that time worked in the title insurance business. Working with me, were a couple of transplanted English co-workers. I found their ability to banter and joke around a lot of fun. We would regularly hang out at Shakespeare's in Old Town San Diego.

Besides learning the art of playing darts, eating shepherd's pie, and drinking Guinness...I'd like to think we learned from each other.

I've also met some people on this site from Australia & New Zealand. It would be great to learn some more about our mates "down under". What makes them unique? The Canadians on this site also have much to offer. I have only been to Canada one time and didn't learn much. Perhaps they can tell us some things that are exceptional about their culture.

Ask some questions and be prepared to learn a little bit while sharing about your own country. We share a common language, I think!

In America, we say that we will "root" for our favorite sports team. A couple of Australians told me that if I said that in their country, it would be considered very rude. When I asked them to explain, they just smiled and said, "Just don't say it, mate".

Can someone from Australia please explain to me why it's wrong to say "root"?

Here in America, if you "root" for your team it means you are supporting them.

U.S., most of us live either here or in U.K.

The US is a giant mixing pot, really, everybody is different (unless they are way too trendy).

I might be mistaken, but I believe a "root" is Aussie slang for intercourse and is used in much the same way as an American might use the word f*ck.

Yes, that is very correct. "Root" is the Aussie slang for sexual intercourse. It has made it's way to us Kiwis as well, but generally we tend to use the word f*ck because that's what it is

Cananda is the same as the US!

so they consider "root" to be rude, but seem to be fine with soccer riots where people get killed often.

To my fellow Americans and others around the globe playing risk:

The English have this sauce called HP Sauce (or brown sauce if you will). The stuff is just awesome! Heinz bought out the company that produces it. Of course the first time I tried it, it was so different I immediately fell in love with it. I put some in my stews which really gave it a "kick". I don't find it in wide supply here obviously, but I recommend you try it.

When I am lucky enough to buy some, I like putting it on potatoes. Any Brits here have recipe suggestions for us savage Yanks using HP sauce with our diet?

Sorry about that. That's part of the reason for this thread...to learn more about those areas of the world. Feel free to share some things with us. As an American, I admit to not being well-educated on differences in the UK.

There's a cafe in Cardiff that delivers full breakfasts for £4 (or £5 for the mega breakfast). How awesome is that?

HP sauce rocks! I have a bottle in the pantry that I used last night on my fish'n'chips!

I love it with any kind of sausages; game sausages, like venison or wild pork sausages, are best.

I'm a bit dubious of the quality of HP sauce that is being made by Heinz, though. That's just not cricket.

Ugh. This is quite earnestly what my partner's parents have for breakfast nearly every single morning. Somehow they aren't obese. I put on what you might call a stone every time I go visit. I don't touch the icky brown sauce, though.

Charleston's a great town. I've been there quite a few times. My wife's Aikido instructor lives there. He is one awesome individual.
