Hey woodruff: In response to a post you made about teenagers be stupid.immature etc, don't lump us all together!

And yeah, about that hot+smart girls... definitely a lot of them where I am, so don't complain that there are hard to find... unless you are too dumb to recognize brains when you around them.

The phrase "Youth is wasted on the young" refers to the idea that the young have all this energy/vitality/vim/vigor, but don't have any of the wisdom which would allow them to most effectively put it to use. It is not at all a reference to a wish to be young again.

The reading mis-comprehension here is not mine.

What's the difference between "smart" and "wise"? Well, to begin with...knowing the difference between "smart" and "wise". I'm not trying to be a smartass...that's a very basic thing that if you don't easily recognize, there's not much anyone can do to help. I say this with the belief that you've bothered to look up the definitions for the two words, of course...if you haven't, then I would throw "smart" out the window too.

As to your claim that you have wisdom...you certainly haven't displayed it in this thread.

As to your claim of your reading comprehension, I would suggest that you do not, since I was not at all referring to you.

i might be wrong here (and tell me if i am woody)

being smart means you have knowledge and know facts
being wise means you know how to use the knowledge/ have experience and have mastered the knowledge

That's basically it. The difference is you can be the smartest man in the world but who would win a war a smart man or a wise man? (damn it this is turning in Hinduism)

I would personally say that "smart" would be more akin to an ability to learn, not necessarily having already learned. Which is why I say it's much more important for you to learn how to learn and learn how to study in school than it is for you to get good grades.

I would consider "wise" to be more along the lines of simply having good judgement and perspective.

i personalty am extremely smart but put the bare minimum effort when i am doing anything work wise...... life so sad seeing so much potential in some people but knowing there is little to no chance that they will ever reach it....hell all i have to do is look at my family to see it

no i am not calling you smart because i don't know you so i cant determine that. i don't know anyone here. for all i know your some 90 year old male stripper

now back on topic

it not just being able to learn anyone can learn but it's how much you can learn that determines how smart you are

How much you can learn is a difficult thing to measure. Say a rich person is limited in what they can learn by the barriers to the world that money can set up, by their isolation to a world with only other rich people. Say a poor person is limited in what they can learn by the need to work at mind-numbing tasks to survive. Say a revolutionary is not limited because he refuses to accept those barriers and works to change the world around him. Is the revolutionary smarter than the rich person, or is he just more likely to experience more of reality and understand it better because he is trying to change it?

I think the connection between amount of learning to learn and capacity to learn, for the most part, is irrelevant for most people. What matters is whether they are willing to fight to change the world and bring down barriers to learning.

In my opinion, yes. You're simply uneducated. "Smarts" (or intelligence) and how educated someone is have only a little to do with one another. Some people, who are not as smart as others, outwork them and end up much more educated for it (a good thing). Some people, who are much smarter than others, don't bother to put in the effort and so wind up far less educated.

I don't think that an individual can determine for themselves whether they have the ability to learn well or not. Any individual is going to be much too biased about themselves (either positively or negatively) in order to do so effectively.
