I still think he was telling the truth during the campaign. "I have a plan to cut the deficit in half."Mr_Adams wrote:For those of you who haven't heard, Obama quite literally walked out of the talks on the debt ceiling. Very nice. High class from beginning to end, Mr. Obama.

Didn't think so.
Nor is he president. All these political hell hounds make me sick.Symmetry wrote:To be fair, Cantor used a Segway, so he didn't walk out.GreecePwns wrote:Were you saying the same thing when Cantor did it a couple of weeks ago?

end the meeting properly? Walking seems like the most presidential option. Maybe you should put up a poll.
I don't honestly understand this at all. Why would you hate what democracy stands for?JoshyBoy wrote:F*ck America.
Well, when I say that, I don't mean the actual geography or all of the residents, rather the system. I despise everything about the "democracy" and what the political system stands for. Not that we are any better, I hate our system just as much.
That last one would've been AWESOME. Segway, not so much. <grin>Symmetry wrote:How else should he have quite literally left? Via Segway? At a dead sprint? Burst through one of the windows?
Notice the quotes? I think he wanted more emphasis on the political system part anyway, and I agree.Woodruff wrote:I don't honestly understand this at all. Why would you hate what democracy stands for?JoshyBoy wrote:F*ck America.

What system do you suggest?JoshyBoy wrote:F*ck America.

You'll get no argument from me over this. I don't think that's necessarily representative of "democracy", but I do tend to think it's more representative of older democracy for various reasons, unfortunately.JoshyBoy wrote:It's not a question of changing anything, and I'm not suggesting a different system, I just hate the way the current system is filled with bullshit and corruption. I also love how it doesn't matter who gets voted in, "the people" still get screwed up the arse. At least that's the case for sure over here.
Put it this way Mr. Ruff, we vote in Labour Party for countless years, and they screw us over. We decide enough with them, let's vote in a coalition of Conservative Party and Liberal Democrats, they seem to be promising reasonable things. Guess what they have done. That's right, screwed us over. Now up here in Scotland, the Scottish Nationalist Party are saying "Scottish Independence!", and "We'll look after ourselves first!", promising heaps of bullshit like more money for everyone and a better economy. But I "bet my bottom dollar" that if and/or when we vote them into power, they will also screw us over. The system is full of liars, cheats, and bullshitters.Woodruff wrote:You'll get no argument from me over this. We could, if more than 30% voted. And if people were really willing to take necessary pain, which in this case does include some tax increases, not just cuts.esiemer wrote: The bottom line is, normal citizens can't win.
At what point does one shift from being "normal" to "abnormal"? Would $500,000 per year do it? Or would $10,000 per year while living off the grid work?esiemer wrote:Sadly, JoshyBoy is right. The average people keep getting screwed.
Here in America reasonable people are forced to vote Democrat because for the last 30 years Republicans have been piling debt onto our country and giving tax breaks to the wealthy. They keep promising it will provide more jobs, but it never does. They say things like "President Reagan proved that deficits don't matter". They start wars on a whim and promise that they will pay for themselves.
Then, when none of their ideas work, when all they are left with is historical failure and massive debt for the whole country, they blame it on the new guy. So they run on a platform of jobs jobs jobs!! Elect us and we will provide jobs! Then they get into office and don't do a damn thing about jobs. Instead they try to redefine rape and pin all their failures over the past 30 years on the new guy.
So they use the only leverage they have, the debt ceiling. Something they never cared about before. They also admit that they don't want a solution, they just want to make the new guy look bad so that he doesn't get reelected. McConnel actually admits he cares more about his political party than he does about our country.
Still, the President tries to reach a compromise. But when he runs into a brick wall of opposition that will not compromise despite their party being responsible for the debt, he gets pissed that he is forced to deal with people who openly admit they don't want to solve the problem, they just want to make him look bad. So he storms out, and now he's the bad guy.
For the record, Obama isn't perfect and he has done a lot wrong. I'd rather not vote for him again. But the other option is full of cognitive dissonance, forgets the lessons of history, and only has bad ideas.
The bottom line is, normal citizens can't win.

Considering tax cuts aren't even being considered in this debt ceiling debate, that part of your point is moot. It would also be nice if people would accept cuts in their entitlements, but that's not acceptable. All we can do is increase taxes on the rich.PLAYER57832 wrote:We could, if more than 30% voted. What am I making up? What tax cuts are included in these negotiations? I know the president wants tax increases. I know Pelosi and her democrats won't accept any cuts in Medicare and Social Security. OK, so tax cuts aren't being included in deficit-reduction talks. You guys are getting 3 dollars in spending cuts for every dollar in additional revenue. This coming from a Democratic president and a Democratic Senate. And Boehner turns it down. The Republicans realize they have a live hand grenade that they can blow up the economy with. It'd be called negotiating with terrorists in any other venue.Night Strike wrote:What am I making up? What tax cuts are included in these negotiations? I know the president wants tax increases.
