How many of you now think Capitalism is flawed?

Post by Pedronicus »

With the implosion of the western economies due to the banks, the heart of capitalism, going mad and broke in just 30 years of being deregulated to do what they do - make money.

Do you think that Capitalism is a good idea still?

Your title and poll are misleading as they ask completely opposite things.

Your premise is false too: the banks are NOT the heart of capitalism. Entrepreneurship and the freedom to make your own way are at the heart of capitalism.

gotta agree with Nightstrike, at least in part
banks are not the heart of capitalism, though they were necessary to make it practical.

unbridled capitalism has NEVER been a good idea. What most people talk about is capitalism with some restraints. Few disagree with worker protections. Most even agree, at least on the surface, with basic environmental protections. However, when you move onto things like minimum wages, etc, etc... then folks begin to debate.

well good for the ones it was intended to be good for..

1. deregulate banks
2. promote capitalism and parliamentarism as "democracy"
3. ?????
4. PROFIT (in fact enough profit that the richest 1% now controls over 40% of the wealth)

There's nothing in that post that I will be editing (unless you change the title/poll to be consistent).

People who argue in favour of absolute Capitalism usually end up sounding like people who argue for Communism.

"Sure, we had problems, and a small number of people abused the system, but what we need is proper Capitalism/Communism. That Capitalism/Communism that failed so obviously, that wasn't real Capitalism/Communism. In fact it failed because it wasn't Capitalist/Communist enough. In fact, if you look at what Marx/Jefferson/Engels/Hayek wrote, you'll see that it wasn't true Capitalism/Communism."

what slight discrepancy are you moaning about when the post title is "How many of you now think Capitalism is flawed? "
and the poll question is ""Do you think that Capitalism is a good idea still?
It's not as it I've switched it from Was Ronald Regan a great president and then stuck up a poll saying do you think his acting was shit?

My answer to your thread title is that "No, I do not think capitalism is now flawed."

My answer to your poll is that "Yes, I still think capitalism is a good idea."

When I saw the thread title, I thought "I should read this to see what new thing happened to cause capitalism to possibly be flawed." I didn't think your post meant that capitalism was now flawed, but yet I had to vote "yes" in the poll because your poll question asked the opposite thing.

Well, there's a fundamental problem with communism. People will still act along self-interests, whether they're mostly for one's self or for the public good, it depends on the individual. Common ownership of the means of production is unsustainable for providing many different types of goods. Co-op coffee houses? Sure, works fine. Running a sustainable passenger jet manufacturer? Nope.

Capitalism is more about upholding private property rights, competition, and creating an environment of profit-seeking incentives. With that ideal goal as the main objective, individuals will overall receive the best results--compared to those who strove toward the ideal goal of Communism. The historic record speaks for itself; communism even in the ideal ignores human behavior.

Amen brotha, preach it!

Seriously though, it's the ratio of government interference (for those on the right) or corporate interference (for Player) in the capitalistic economy that's flawed, not capitalism itself. There! Is everyone happy now? ...besides communists like Saxi

What made me realize that capitalism is flawed wasn't the implosion of the economy. It's the realization that people profit off of other peoples illnesses and that education has become an overpriced obedience school that diligently trains you to shut up pay off all the loans you've acquired. The realization that products are purposefully made to break after a certain point just so that you'll have to buy another one. Not everything should have a price put on it but that's what capitalism does. Everything else becomes secondary to the money because that's what our culture values above anything else. Not love, not well being, NOT independence, or intellectualism, but money. It's not how I think the world should be but it is.

I know that's really "hippyish" but whatever man, it's how I feel. Capitalism benefit's assholes who have no moral compass. Apparently they just made miss using tax dollars a misdemeanor in Ohio. A misdemeanor????!!!!! That should be a felony!!!!! When an elected official blatantly betrays the very people who elected him into office, effectively he's just a glorified con-artist, a thief! He takes our money on one pretense and uses it for his own agenda (usually for campaigning) THAT'S THEFT!!!! but they just get a slap on the wrist because they're too important and have too much money to go to real jail. That's bullshit and that's why I think Capitalism is bullshit.

Ok I'm finished.

Every system has it's flaws. Capitalism seems to be the best of the bunch when those flaws are taken into account, in my opinion.

The biggest flaw of our current Capitalist system is Socialism.

I think the reason a lot of Americans (and Europeans as well) like capitalism and the free market is because it used to benefit them. Now it benefits someone else and now it's not fun anymore.

No. Capitalism is a terrible idea. People are stupid. The best thing is a benevolent dictatorship. I politely volunteer to be the first. I promise to make all of you my first priority.
