greenoaks wrote: are you aware of any more special event/holiday maps in development/discussion and if so can you give us some hints?
What a tricky question! Well, I don't think I'm authorized to really say anything (especially hints - there will be none of those!). However, I will say that the production of seasonal maps has been discouraged since thenobodies80 took the reigns of the Cartographers team, and it's evident that many Foundry-goers aren't very supportive of behind-the-scenes maps' circumventing the Foundry system. You can participate in the discussion about seasonal/behind-the-scenes maps here , if you want. As for any new maps coming in the future, the Special Events Team is not currently working on a map, but have no fear! There are maps in the Final Forge and the Main Foundry Workshop that are well on their way to "betafication", so you'll certainly be getting your fair dose of new maps in the coming weeks. I hope you enjoyed this edition of Ask A Mod! I can always use some more questions in the Ask A Mod! thread, so stop on by to ask anything you like, from questions about Conquer Club to TeamCC to maps to tournaments to clans to suggestions to C&A cases...to whatever! :)
The Scum Insider by safariguy5 show
The Scum Insider Newbie Help Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information , Mafia and You , and Rules and Terms of Mafia . Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you. What is "Mafia"? Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town.Mafia News Day 3 in the Magic the Gathering Mafia and only 6 players remain! Could be anyone's game at this point with the large number of night kills. Interesting Mafia enters its second day with the town doctor dead. A great loss, but perhaps town can find some mafia to hang.Mafia Callouts Calling all players interested! Some mafia games need some filling: Sign-ups: Seeking Replacements: Now get out there and investigate Mafia for yourself: viewforum.php?f=213 Advanced Roles and Strategy by safariguy5 A role that you can really put your trust in is the topic this weekThe Masons What is It? Masons are usually town roles who have the ability to PM each other at night. A variant of this role is the Daymason who can PM each other during the daytime. Sometimes, the mason group may have a recruiter who can recruit other people to the mason group at night. However, mafia can also be recruited, so it's best to choose targets carefully.Example Jack and Jill are masons. They can PM each other during every night phase. How to Play this Role Masons are usually Town but can also have Mafia members. Sometimes, a Third Party group in a large game can also be masoned. The most common variant is a two or three person mason group where all the members are town. Masons may be vanilla, or have night actions, so it's rather difficult to WIFOM who might be a mason. However, if you are a mason with no other abilities, it may be a good idea to play as an aggressive townie. Since masons are a relatively weak role with the added bonus of having someone able to verify your claim, claimed masons generally are pretty low on the mafia kill list. And if the mafia do end up nightkilling a claimed mason, it immediately clears the other mason.
show: Interrogation of General Brock II
Q. Sir, General, Sir! *salutes* At ease, soldier. *stands atop jeep hood with bullhorn*. Now listen up, chaps and chappettes, for what I’m about to say. Q. Do you visit Brock's Monument in Queenston? Unfortunately, I live relatively distant from Queenston. However, I do have relatives around Oshawa, and I may, some day, extend my drive to travel to St. Catherines and area. I’ve always wanted to visit Brock’s monument… Not only that, but I believe that every self respecting Canadian who lives less than nine hours’ drive away should visit the monument of the hero of Canada. Q. Do you remember what it was like being a lower ranker? Vaguely. It’s been a long time… I do remember the desperate, prolongued struggle from private (I never fell below private) to Sergeant. Sergeant didn’t last long, as I’d by then garnered much knowledge, stopped playing reckless games and found some amazing team-mates. Also, I remember the euphoria of gaining over fifty points in a 1 v. 1… It seems that, these days, I’m only capable of losing that many points in a 1 v. 1. :P Q. When did you first know you were 'starting to make it,' in terms of achieving a rank and keeping it? Well, as I mentioned above, I believe that when I surpassed Sergeant, I knew I was going to “make it.” I obtained the rank of lieutenant and clung to it for dear life. It was like entering a whole new league – the “big guns,” so to speak. I fluctuated about there for a couple of months, but then I eventually reached captain. I remember reading a forum thread at the time I obtained captain, and some hapless soul had written that captain was merely a “stepping point” – you were either going to fall back to lieutenant or move on to major. Well, after falling immediately thereafter to Lieutenant, I saw the truth in that statement. :P After that, though, it seemed like I clung to captain for a long time…. And now I’m a colonel. I’m quite content with colonel, and I doubt that I'll try for anything more, as I don’t really want to be paranoid about playing only certain games that are guaranteed victories, and I don’t want to concern myself with points… I play for the clan, so Colonel is as high as I need to go. Q. Your profile says you are a history aficionado---what particular era or topic interests you the most? Do you have photos of your collection of items? As my profile asserts, I’m certainly a history aficionado, and I enjoy absorbing whatever historical knowledge I can from whatever era or topic. I particularly favour the British Colonial era, and I’m proud to have an English heritage. There is much to be said for a “tiny” island nation that colonized enough of the world that, “The sun never set on the British Empire,” that obtained naval dominance in the 1600s and maintained it until as far as WWII and that still remains a highly respected nation in the Western World. Great Britain has defined many of the political, scientific, medical and social systems that you and I are familiar with. I do have photographs of some of my swords and helmets. In particular, I stumbled across a vintage WWII Swiss helmet resplendent with intact unit markings. Q. Why did you choose 1st Reg as your clan name? When GeneralMatt and I originally began pondering the possibility of forming a clan (after O&H crumbled), we both favoured naming the clan after an authentic, and renowned, English unit. We did ponder a few generic names (“Global Raiders,” “Destructive Force,” “Militant Power”), but finally agreed that there were very few clans named after authentic units. We then debated what unit to name the clan after. I favoured 8th Army, for obvious reasons. GeneralMatt favoured 3rd “The Buffs.” We also tossed around units like PPCLI, the Coldstream Guards, 1st Armoured Div, and, of course, the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards. I liked regimental size, as, obviously, we wouldn’t want to get even proportionately to the size of an army. :P But a regiment has easy logistics and is easy to handle. The deciding facts were that the 1st has a long and very renowned history, and that the Regiment is still active, as compared to the 3rd or 8th Army. Originally, we were going to allow only people from the Commonwealth into the clan, but the first months of clan membership are tough… We struggled to stay afloat with a broad range of nationalities. And I’m forever grateful that we have them. : ) Q. Why did you set up a clan in the first place? After O&H disbanded, a lot of very good players were cast off. Only a number of Dan’s core team-mates were accepted into FOED. Truthfully, I hadn’t been very active in O&H, but a friend of mine had grown quite attached to them, and the break-up was a real blow to her. I (and the others) played solo for a short while, but then I hatched the notion to form a clan of our own. I then asked 86, General Flashman and Roy if they’d be up to it, gathered a few of my most common team-mates (and one or two other former O&H members), and the rest is, as they say, history. Q. What made you start playing CC? My Uncle, two cousins and Dad played a game of Risk several years ago. We had a smashing time, and I won. We resolved that we’d have to play more often, and my Uncle hatched the idea of looking for a site online. He found two… I favoured the other one because it looked simpler, but I was outvoted. :P We all signed onto CC, and it’s been a wonderful time since (though I’m the only one of the four of us still playing). Q. Is it true your brother is obsessed with people's favourite colours? Haha! What’s yours? I’ll let him know. :P Q. What is the most satisfying thing about running your own clan? My goodness, that’s a perplexing question. The camaraderie, I think. I love each and every player in the Regiment, and I ensure that I maintain communications with each member. I quite enjoy the logistical aspect and basically appreciate leading such a fine group of players (a well oiled machine, so beware!). Q. When did you feel 1RFG first became truly competitive? What?! We’ve become competitive? :P Our first significant victory was against RA. It was at that time that the old members of the clan were still more or less together, and we all proverbially shook hands and said, “Wow, this is great… We’ll make it.” Q. What is your long term goals? In life? I intend to finish a combined history/political science degree at University. Then I’ll become a highly educated historian who makes his funding by peddling goods at the flea markets in Florida (or getting elected into a prominent town council… not sure yet which I’d prefer). On CC, my long term goal is to breach the top ten rankings and defeat KORT and the Pack. Q. Whats the average airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? 4k/h… if it’s European. ; ) Did you know that the HMS Swallow was a fifty gun fourth rate? Q. What part of O&H do you think had the greatest influence on how you run your clan? Taught me how not to run a clan. :P I quite enjoyed how “free” the players were under Rocket. You could join whatever game you wanted with whoever… I’ve tried to maintain that sense of looseness (though more practically…). Q. What was it like to be a beginning player? Odd and exhilarating, simultaneously. I thought that the rank system was neat, indubitably, but hadn't much knowledge of how the game actually worked... I remember my first freestyle game. I hadn’t the foggiest of what was going on. In fact, I think my cousin created it to be freestyle quite by accident. Q. Any more "coughs" secret weapons that you plan to put in your clan? Or have you sworn off that habit? Did you learn something from your secret weapon program? That would be classified information charged to the Regimental branch of Intelligence. We've been working on artificial intelligence and V2 rockets. ;) Q. Public mea culpa as well? This question and the last are somewhat related, so I’ll kind of address them together in a serious manner. Yes, it was my mistake to permit BlueBell into the clan without knowing all of the circumstances around his exile from CC. You see, I still believe that the case surrounding Buddysystem was entirely arbitrary and unfair, but he should have left his defense to individuals such as myself. I had not realized that he had created numerous accounts in order to argue, himself (thereby becoming a “multi”). Therefore, in warning to the leaders of other, younger, clans, beware of each player that you accept into your clan. Get the current multi-hunter to run a check on each player you admit… It doesn’t take more than a simple pm to stave off a lot of trouble. The entire incident almost cost me membership on CC, and it almost cost the Regiment membership in the CLA. Q. Where are all of the normal forum attendees with nothing to do but ask odd questions? Apparently, this question is to myself… So, where in blazes are they? Don't seem to have anything better to do throughout the day. Q. a/s/l? Age: Between 100 and 10. Sex: Male. Location: Ontario Q. Do you or do you not require subordinates to salute you upon sight? Of course, sah! Wouldn’t think otherwise. Our parades are amazing spectacles. Q. When you and General Roy see each other, do you just fist bump? Fist bump? Are you serious? We bow to each-other, raise our pace sticks in recognition and then work through our top secret special handshake. Q. In team games, do you follow a chain of command? That’s an interesting notion. heh Certainly, there is some semblance of command in a team game, as team leaders somewhat assume control and advise the players how to proceed. However, we encourage the input and strategy provided by all players, and veto power is granted to nobody . Q. Who makes the coffee? The coffee percolator. :P Q. How many members of your clan are veterans? Actually, a good number of the members are army vets. I won’t name them without their permission, but we certainly have 3 or 4, and we’ve had more pass through the ranks. I’m honoured to have them aboard. We also have our own self-proclaimed “hippy.” :P Q. How do you feel about women in the 1st Regiment? I’m quite exultant to have women in the Regiment. They raise morale and add different thought processes and methods - a different "flavour". Since the Army hasn’t had any scruples with women in the army since the ‘40s, I don’t see any problems, either! So I’ll shout out to MegsEggs, Arya, Shakeycat and Queen Vic. Thanks for your significant contributions to the clan, and it’s been a pleasure to play with each of you! Q. What's your favorite color? Good query. Toronto Maple Leaf blue. Q. Who is your favorite clan director? Chemefreak! (yeah... I looked to see who asked this question. XD ) Q. What happened to General Brock I? He passed away at the Battle of Queenston Heights on October 13, 1812. The Yankees killed him. An interesting fact is that he had noticeable close calls more than three times before. Q. What is a Grenadier Guard? A Grenadier Guard is an elite foot soldier (Quite probably another reason why I picked the name for our clan). In fact, in the 17th Century, the Grenadiers were the tallest and strongest of the soldiers, and a part of their task was to hurl grenades at the opponent. Grenade throwing became obsolete (kind of amusing, isn't it? Grenades are once again a very potent infantry weapon) with improved line warfare (and flintlock muskets), but the Grenadier Guards were still used as elite shock or assault troops. It also happens that the GG are preferred for parades, in part due to reputation and in part due to appearance. Q. What setting is not typically used in clan wars do you wish would be used more often? Hmm… I wouldn’t mind if nuclear were used more often, I suppose. On the other hand, I couldn’t care. Q. How cool is Canada? In the winter, fall and spring, very. :P Q. Do you speak French? My knowledge of the French language can be carved into a dinner-plate. I know enough to conduct crude communications… Which isn’t saying much, since I have gotten a Spanish person to tell me where the washroom is much more quickly than a French one. :P Q. Preferred currency: Loonie or Toonie? Toonie is worth more, so I select that one. Q. I like your sig! The quotation "Of all the world's great heroes, there's none that can compare...to the British Grenadiers." is that just something you made up or is there a historical context? Well, of course there’s historical context to the meaning behind the phrase. I spoke truthfully - the GG ARE the world's great heroes. ;) Also, it’s a line from the British Grenadier Guards quick marching song. Thanks, I like it, also! Q. Wasn't Brock grossly over-rated? It was Shaeffe who won the battle, and whose name is forgotten now, while Brock's name is on a street in every municipality between Cornwall and Leamington. Certainly not! I don’t think that the commander who conquered the entire Niagara Peninsula in a matter of five months, galvanised the shabby force of Canadian militiamen into an effective fighting force and assumed position as supreme commander of all forces in Upper Canada can be called “over-rated.” He capably and almost single-handedly designed Canada’s defences. Also, he created valuable allies out of the Shawnee and other First Nations tribes. General Brock was a respectful gentleman and officer, and his legacy is truly larger than life. He once accepted a duel against a professional duellist and known “bully” in the 49th Regiment of Foot. Since Brock was so tall, his compatriots were dismayed; however, he stipulated that the duel be fought over a handkerchief… His opponent backed off and also left the Regiment. Sheaffe led the English to victory at Queenston Heights, but he didn’t even arrive at the battlefield until at least four hours after Brock died. Sheaffe was also unpopular with his subordinates and soldiers, and he is quite responsible for the loss of York. Q. If you had to join another clan which clan would you petition for admittance to and why? I would petition to join the Pig Renters. I find them to be a high quality clan composed of splendid players who have a sense of humour. I respect Gunn, alt and UK. I’m not fond of the name, but the military pig theme if amusing. And swine are predators to anything smaller or weaker. Q. If you could afford your own private island, where would it be?It’d be just off of Great Britain. I’d anchor it there, myself, if necessary. Q. Is there any difference between tequila and diesel fuel? Haha! Well, as far as I know, tequila hasn’t been known to cause brain damage by inhalation. Q. What's more deadly, neurotoxin or saxitoxin? Saxitoxin’s not deadly… it’s all hot air. Q. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood? Depends on what flipping dam it’s helping the beavers build. O_o Beware the Beavers! Have you seen the commercial? I think it was Michelin, maybe... Q. If one of your CC games could be made into a movie, with live actors playing the troops, real settings for the maps, etc., which game would it be? Where would you film it? Who would be the stars? There are two games in particular that come to mind. One, World 2.1, in which some chap who I had never played with before, and I, destroyed our opponents in a 8 player showdown. It’s one of very few 8 player doubles that I’ve won, and it was a no spoils match. Game 3476740 The other situation occurred in this game, when Rover invited me to join a game against the odds (ljex was a general, at the time), and we won the thing. Game 8934464 I would choose Oasis for the movie. It’d be a fascinating war film, with a lot of fast paced action and a climactic ending (ljex making a last drive and nearly killing ian… his own Battle of the Bulge. Not only that, but he was tremendously sore about losing and expressed it verbally on my wall… Drama!). Stars… If I could get Harrison Ford in his younger years, count him in. He makes an excellent “soldier.” Tom Cruise and Barry Pepper would be nice, too. I would, of course, wish to cast Rover, Megs (feminine charm), Ian and myself. For the “enemy,” Dwayne Johnson, Billy Brown, Sean Connery and Al Pacino. For Oasis, a good set would be the Egyptian Desert or maybe Arizona. I would prefer to get an experienced director of staged wars... Perhaps George Lucas or Steven Spielberg. Cheers - Over and Out! General Brock II
Hello again my friends, and welcome to your favorite part of the Newsletter, "War Games", where you can find information about CC Tournaments!
I really enjoyed being part of the
Sci-Fi and Fantasy Tournament Contest , and I hope my article about it will accurately convey my delight!
Also in this issue, we have an interview with theCrown conducted by WorldCup4James, we have the fourth installment in DaveH's outstanding Tournament Tips series, a brand-new series by sensfan called A World Of Possibilities, and the second installment in sensfan's TPA Wrap.
On the downside, I have to report that
sonicsteve will no longer be with us, having gotten overwhelmed by the demands of his new R/L job. Steve was a tournament organiser of some repute, a Tournament Director, a great player, quite possibly the Grand Champion of Season 1 of the TPA, a very good writer who needed no proofreading, and a fun, upbeat guy to talk to. I'm not sure we will ever find all those attributes in one compact package again. He will definitely be missed.
Dukasaur Tournament Executive Sci-Fi and Fantasy Contest Climaxes! by Dukasaur show
On November 15th DJ Teflon and sonicsteve came up with the idea of holding a contest for Tournament Organisers to produce creative new Sci-Fi/Fantasy tournaments. It amazes me that it was only six weeks ago, seems like it was a lot longer. Seven organisers rose to the challenge: fairman , SirSebstar , Fuzzy316 , eagleblade , lostatlimbo , betiko and DoomYoshi . I had the honour and thrill of being one of the contest judges, and I can tell you that there are some pretty impressive efforts in the bunch! Only ten points separated the first-place entry from the fourth-place entry: a very close race indeed! The four top-scoring tournaments have now been posted for sign-ups, and the top top three will receive GA medals when their tournaments wind up. At the very top, with a composite score of 102.5, is Race to the Future, 2112 AD by lostatlimbo . A very innovative blend of the historical and the futuristic, Race to the Future pits the players as time travellers forced to travel back through time to fight their way "home" to the future. In second place, with a composite score of 100.5, was Fuzzy316 's effort, The Dark Wizard Conqclu. This one is a might and magic style tournament, which will take you through medieval-themed maps like Castle Lands and Siege. In third place, with a composite score of 97.5, is DoomYoshi 's MtG: Shards of Alara , based on the Magic: the Gathering expansion pack of the same name. In this one, you choose your own maps. The game settings are derived by the characteristics of your chosen shard. The above three organisers will recieve GA medals (assuming that they successfully complete their tourneys) but the fourth place entry (with a composite score of 92.5) also is very worthy of mention. (Did I mention the contest was very close?) Betiko 's entry, Drug Wars 2040 , pits the Cops versus the Drug Lords in a war for control of a dystopic North America. I very strongly suggest you check out all four tournaments. Even if you end up not joining, some of the graphics are absolutely beautiful to look at! But, by all means, do sign up! My congratulations to the three winners, kudos to all seven entrants, and a special thanks to DJ Teflon and sonicsteve for allowing me to be a judge and participate in this excellent contest!
Meet the Tournament Organisers: TheCrown by WorldCup4James show: interview with thecrown
To close off 2011, tournament organiser (and champion) TheCrown will join us in giving some valuable ideas on what makes an enjoyable, memorable, and competitive tournament. TheCrown has hosted 24 tournaments, and his trademark work is the "Strain your Brain " 20-tournament series. He's also won 18 tournaments after only 16 months at ConquerClub. TheCrown continues to create unique, exciting, and fast-paced competitions; his brand-new Avalanche tournaments are set around the winter season and keep players interested by featuring a very creative and cool 1v1 method of advancement. It's something different from the generic single-elimination or round-robin style competitions. Let's see what he has to say, I love tournaments that bring in creativity and create a festive CC holiday spirit. Tell me about your Avalanche series, which has picked up quite some popularity around the winter season. What sets this tourney apart? I dreamed up the avalanche series of tournaments in a few days, trying to think of a fun new way to incorporate themed maps together. These tournaments are fun because you're never eliminated, but you play all the way down the mountains you are in and you can amass some big numbers at the end of the tourney and win, even if you were behind in the beginning. Stealing part of someone's mountain avalanche is what it's all about, and then rolling down and beating others on the mountain.Creativity is key! Besides this, what ideas or type of format do you think are critical for a successful tournament? Lots of games? High-intensity, single-elimination style competitions? I believe a successful tournament has a variety of maps, a fun and easy-to-understand format, good score-keeping and posting, and a quick finishing time. My first Avalanche tourney finished in just under a month and the GA medal was awarded just after a month. I have been in tournaments that have lasted 7 to 11 months. Sometimes the TO skips out for a few months and expects people to stay interested, and I find that appalling. I can only have 3 tourneys at a time, so right now I have 2 "Avalanche" tourneys going and another called "Mini-clan war tourney ". That tourney introduces people to what it's like to be in a clan. I got 32 people who were under 500 games completed and currently not in a clan, and I put them in 8 groups of 4, letting them fight it out in a single bracket tourney with 6 doubles, 6 triples, and 1 random quad game which they must fill from their mini-clan of 4 people. I have had a lot of feedback from this tourney from the players and they really seem to love it. In fact, I believe some of them are about to start up a real clan. It's pretty exciting. Expect to see me putting on more of both of these types of tourneys for some time to come. You've put together 25 tourneys (and counting), but it's also very much worth noting that you've won 18 tourneys. Throughout your tournament career, can you recall any other fellow organisers' tournament that were well-run and unique? It's hard to remember all the tourneys I have played in, but the best tourneys I believe are flexmaster33 's tourneys. Great scoring systems, great standings and great prizes. He could do with adding a few more GA medals because his tourneys are huge and long.tokle from TNC clan puts on some very well thought out themes with interesting stories. You can tell he puts a lot of work into his tourneys. I like tourneys that have good scoring systems, and his are rewarding if you win your 1 vs. 1 games in fewer rounds. I liked the idea I used in my "Strain your Brain " tourney series where in the 1 vs. 1 games, if you went 1st and you won, you would get 3 points, and if you went 2nd and won, you would get 4 points. It is pretty difficult to win when you go 2nd in 1 vs. 1 play. Of course, it was a pain keeping the stats on who went 1st in each game, so I have quit doing it for now. It's all about establishing a unique system players like. So enough about CC for a minute :D  Wish to share any of your favorite sports or hobbies? Sport #1 is slow pitch softball, which I have been playing for 19 years. Sport #2 is to make myself better at sport #1 by weight-lifting, which I have been doing for 18 years off and on. Hobbies - Watching "Heart of the Matter" by Shawn McCraney, watching American football, playing "Civilization" and "AOE" with my kids, and reading books about the Bible.I love slow-pitch softball, since it often time puts all the emphasis on fielding (I was never good at hitting in baseball  ). It's fun unless you're playing at third base and get your teeth knocked out  Yes, 3rd base is about the only place I don't want to play. I play everything else though. I love the Miken Freak and Worth Mayhem bats, and I stick with them and ignore the newest technology for bats. I am a .650 batter with the most power for home runs on my team... and I'm one of the oldest on the team at 41.Impressive! Any favorite music? Todd Agnew & Third Day & Regina Spektor.I noticed a while back, you were a Brigadier. Did you ever eat any snacks that seemed to woo the intensity cubes in your favor? For me, it's a nice glass of cola  I think my stomach has been aching too much lately... maybe I need to try new foods.Alka-Seltzer will help you roll 6s ;) No, I wish. :D It's the end of the year, and the entire Tournament Team of the Newsletter is looking forward to the many new organisers that join in the fun of competitive risk-taking. Each organiser always brings something unique for players to enjoy. What's the one tip you'd like to mention to the aspiring TOs of 2012? For TOs in 2012: I believe it's fun to see unique or different types of tournaments run. Thanks TheCrown ! Best of luck in the new year!
Tournament Tips: by DaveH show: updating your results
I'm quite lazy. Once I have updated my tournament results in Excel I like to be able to copy a block of text into the tournament thread to update the winners without needing additional typing. Therefore I use functions and macros where possible. Macros are accessed in Excel from the Tools/Macro menu. The best way I find of creating a new one is to go to Tools/Macro/Record New Macro; then enter the macro name (and perhaps a key press) that you want to use and then click the "stop" logo on the small window that appears. Then go to Tools/Macro/Macros, highlight your macro and choose "Edit" to open your macro into a new window so that you can edit and test your macro before saving the final version. Obviously there are many different types of tournaments and ways of scoring, so I'll give an example from one of my present tournaments. In this one, a 4-player assassin tournament, I am recording the winner's name for each game and therefore need a macro that adds up the number of wins by each player. The winners' names are in a list and I use the following macro to scan down the list and copy the winners names into a separate list.Code: Select all Dim i, j, itotal As Integer 'integers used in this macro Dim Aname, Bname As String 'string fields used to hold the players' names itotal = 0 'itotal is the number of winners For i = 47 To 112 'start to last row number of the winners' list Aname = Cells(i, 25).Value '25 is the player list's column number If Aname <> "" Then 'not blank - so a player's name itotal = itotal + 1 ' increment the number of winners Cells(itotal + 46, 29).Value = Aname 'put the player's name in column 29 Cells(itotal + 46, 30).Value = 1 'put 1 (for 1 win) in the next column End If
We now have a list of all the winners with 1's in the next column. Obviously there may be players who have won more than one game, so we sort them alphabetically:Code: Select all Range(Cells(47, 29), Cells(46 + itotal, 30)).Select Selection.Sort Key1:=Range("AC47"), Order1:=xlAscending
We now scan down our list and, if there are two names the same, we add together the number of wins and delete one of the results. We then have to repeat the sort and check for duplicates until we have no further duplicates:Code: Select all j = 1 'j used as a "duplicate" flag While j > 0 'repeat this sequence while j>0 (duplicates found) j = 0 ' no duplicates yet For i = 1 To itotal - 1 Aname = Cells(i + 46, 29) 'first name in list Bname = Cells(i + 47, 29) 'second name in list If Aname = Bname Then 'the player has more than 1 win j = j + 1 'so j increased to flag that a duplicate has been found Cells(i + 46, 30) = Cells(i + 46, 30) + Cells(i + 47, 30) 'add the number of wins together Cells(i + 47, 29) = "" 'delete the duplicate name Cells(i + 47, 30) = "" 'delete the second number itotal = itotal - 1 ' 1 fewer names in winner's list End If Next i Range(Cells(47, 29), Cells(46 + itotal + j, 30)).Select 're-sort our list Selection.Sort Key1:=Range("AC47"), Order1:=xlAscending Wend
The final act is to sort by the total number of wins:Code: Select all Range(Cells(47, 29), Cells(46 + itotal, 30)).Select Selection.Sort Key1:=Range("AD47"), Order1:=xlDescending
The resulting block of names and number of games won can then be copied and pasted to your tournament thread. The macro can then be accessed by assigning a keypress or using a button on the spreadsheet. (These "tips" are ones that I have tried to make it a bit easier in managing my own tournaments. I am sure there are different and better methods than these, so please let me know. Any queries on the above I'll be glad to respond to!)
A World of Possibilities by Sensfan show
Introduction DaveH covers Excel formatting, Plurple gives simple yet crucial instructions on how to run a tournament. I also run the TPA Update, and we’ve got Official Tourney Updates and Join This! Or Not? But now, here’s a new one. Tournament formats. How you run your tournament. The basic design and concept of a tournament revolves around the format. Round robin group stage? Single or double elimination? Well, here’s my advice: 1. Be creative. Great tournaments have really creative and fruitful concepts. This is how you will attract players. 2. Be original. Make something your own. A new format, a new concept is more possibilities, more excitement and intensity. 3. Be simple. Have a complicated format? Explain it the least amount of words possible, while still being clear. Featured Format: Single Elimination What is it? Single Elimination. One way to describe it is: “16 players, and 1 game for each player, and then the winning players stay in the competition and play again, and the losers are out, and then the winners of the second round play again, and the losers are out, and then the winners of the…” See, this is being too complicated. Here’s a simple one: “16 players. If you win your game, you move on to the next round. Losers are out.” That’s pretty basic. Obviously, you don’t always have to have 16 players to do Single Elimination. You can have 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 and so on and so on. As long as you multiply the previous number by 2, you will have a clean and even single elimination tournament.Visual Guide If you still don’t dig it, here’s a visual idea of single elimination. The check marks represent the winner. As you can see, Blitzaholic beat Rabbiton (entirely fictional, of course) and moved on to round 2. Rabbiton is eliminated. But, in the next round, HighlanderAttack (HA) beat Blitzaholic, and moved on to the third round, the finals. However, Dukasaur beats HA and wins the fictional tournament. You win, you move on, until you have no one else to play.My Two Cents of Advice Simple enough? Here’s 3 things you’ll want to explain before you post your single elimination tournament. 1. Number of Players 2. Settings and Map 3. How You Will Draw the Games This last one is important. Will you draw by rank, or just purely random? It’s up to you. If you want to choose random, I recommend random.org! Just click on their free List Randomizer. Pros and Cons Pros: Single Elim. is great for those quick, rapido, rapido style tournaments. It's also an easy way to nab a tournament medal! It's basic, and not too hard to explain. Cons: As always, there's the luck factor, meaning you could be paired with a difficult player right off, and lose just like that. Also it isn't too creative and doesn't appeal to players like original tourneys do.Next Time Next time, we look at Round Robin Group formatting. For those tournament gurus, fear not! A more challenging level of formatting is coming up! Of course, it’s a world of possibilities.
TPA Wrap by Sensfan show
Welcome to the second edition of the TPA Wrap. This edition, we get the regular update, and a look forward to 2012 in TPA! TPA 1 Headlines TPA Season 1: Wrap No change from last time around.TPA 2 Headlines TPA Season 2: Completed Tournaments As mentioned in the past, only 1 tournament has been finished to date. DJ Teflon's Speed Terminator V finished with Leehar winning with a dominating Kill Point Percentage of 3600%. Uckuki came in second with 2100%. Leehar wins the first completed event of the year, winning 500 points. Uckuki is in second with 300.TPA Season 2: Sonic Goes Back To School The standings have not yet been updated for this tournament, however osujacket is still in 1st, with a 4 point lead over Leehar.TPA Season 2: Eurobasket 2011 In the Eurobasket 2011, the second phase is underway: Russia (Leehar, maasman and Gromph) just snuck through in a incredibly tight Group D along with Slovenia and Ukraine. Turkey, Poland and Spain advance from Group A, Italy, France and Serbia from Group B, and Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro (sneaking in thanks to tiebreaker) from Group C.TPA Season 2: CC Golf Match Play In this match, ubcman64 has a 2 game lead over MudPuppy, with two to go. It looks like ubcman64 will have a victory in this tournament.TPA Season 2: World Cup Doubles In this major, Ir1sh Ace and Conchobar are among the top 8 doubles teams ready for action. See below for my Predictions for this tournament. aaronvollrath & jakevv come away with the Consolation prize, finishing in 17th place.TPA Season 2: Bruceswar Escalating Terminator Tournament Deng Xiao Ping, gameplayer, deantursx, Tripitaka, Enormastitz, Night Strike are the finalists of this tournament. They are playing on 5 maps to determine the winner, and we need a clear winner. I've got predictions below, but I'm not making a clear call on my prediction for the winners.TPA Season 2: So, you wanna be a Pirate We're in the closing stages of this fourth round, with Keiths31 and Tripitaka advancing from Group B, Group A is in a deadlock tie. The first of two tiebreaker matches pits all three members of that group against each other, and Hath is dominating the tiebreaker, and it looks like it's home free. It will be between whakamole and Enormastitz for the second tiebreaker for the last spot in the fifth round. TPA Season 2: Angola loves the Originals This tournament is almost finished it's first round. 40 maps are used for this tournament, which are the first 40 maps on Conquer Club.TPA Season 2: Asia Terminator Mr.DooM has won this first round, and tiebreakers are sent out to those many players who managed only 1 point! The lowest 12 in points are cut, and 8 players ended up with 0 points. Among them... Leehar and Tupence. Better luck next time!TPA Season 2: Assisination by Fours + Even Up This assasin tournament means that if you are assasinated, you are eliminated! Even Up is a tournament that means if you win a game, you move on. Simple as that! No results yet posted for these tournaments yet, but games have been sent for the first round.TPA Season 2: Beat the Odds The first round is nearly finished, in a tournament that credits those who win a 1v1 game going second.TPA Season 2: Guojia Anquan Bu Join the Chinese secret service in a 10 phase tournament! First, a basic survey of China, with two games on Greater and Fractured China, and one game on Hong Kong! aalil , the sneaky comrade, has perfected 25 points and wins the round. His comrades John Deere and mviola have 24. The lowest seven are cut and shamed for all eternity, as they have disrespected the great leader of China. (ha, ha, joke)TPA Season 2: I picked which map? ThrushAAX and barterer2002 are among the 24 winners of their groups. The players are in 5-group divisons, and play 5 games, on the map that people signed-up for. Here's the catch: You can only sign-up on a map you have never won on! TPA Season 2: Is random a map? This Random Map Double Elimination match-up is looking nice. We have 8 teams on the winner's bracket, and 15 (soon to be 16) on the loser's bracket, where the Losers fight for their lives in this competition. This is turning out to be one heck of a battle!TPA Season 2: In Sign-Ups We have a doubles and triples tourney in sign-ups, dowian2's Davis Cup, and sensfan's Chief Trio. The Davis Cup is based on the real-life tennis Davis Cup, and Chief Trio is a CC tournament with a reality game show style twist. The latter needs only 2 more trios, while the Davis Cup accepts unlimited sign-ups. And we have a TPA2-Major event, with World Assassin taking sign-ups. Hurry up, the spots are filling in quickly for the second Major of the year! Big points up for grabs!TPA 1 Standings No change in standings.TPA 2 Standings No change in standings. Did You Know? That valiant and superstar CC player Chunk was in the running for one of the tournaments in TPA1? But then somebody shoved him under a bus, he got run over, his famous white chef's hat flew away in the air, and he was given lowly and shameful number 0001. As he found himself on the extreme of the scoreboard, he went home and cooked boiled eggs. Little did he know that all the other players in that tournament suddenly found themselves in a cave with no WiFi and couldn't make their CC turns! One night, after a long day at the kitchen, Chunk took his turn. Surprise, surpise! Everyone deadbeated! He was the ruler of the Tournament Player's Association!Predictions For Lindax's World Cup Format Doubles, we are in the Quarter Finals. I'm predicting that Ir1sh Ace and Conchobar should handle barterer2002 and dtellis easily enough. Danryan and Pander88Uk wins it for me against xman5151 and akabob2, Emperor69 and KKlemen barely gets my nod over drunkmunkey and alaskanassasin (nice name, btw) and Timminz and Bones2484 are my pick to defeat mviola and Jakes1. For Bruceswar Escalating Terminator, the Classic, Afria and British Isles game are a toss-up, and while Deng Xiao Ping dominates Hong Kong, deantursx and Tripitaka are in the lead in the France battle, with gameplayer in serious trouble early on. No call from me yet on this finals.Looking Forward... in to the Future Next year, we can expect a winner in the Sonicsteve vs. MudPuppy showdown in the TPA1 standings, more results from TPA2, with 2 more majors, and 8 more Premier tournament to come! Who will win the second edition? And, although nothing has been confirmed, we should be able to see the beginning of Tournament Players Association 3! What new tournament are in store for us? Stay tuned!Paparazzi's Corner Program Notice Yes, due to no new developments, I've scratched the Paparazzi's Corner this time around. However... do you have a question for any TPA player, commissioner, graphics designer? Drop me a pm with your question and the juiciest ones get picked and asked, to be featured in the next edition of the TPA Update Wrap Paparazzi's Corner. In Conclusion... No change from the TPA1 or 2 standings, but we've got a tight finals over at the Bruceswar Escalating Terminator! We have a Major tournament in sign-ups, and other TPA2 tournament in full swing! Until next time, when you can expect: Predictions? Yep. Breaking News? Right here. Opinion? Got some. A wish you all a safe and happy New Year. See you in 2012! Happy birthday Conquer Club! Sensfan
Hello, folks! Sully filling in for thehippo8 again; don't worry, he should be back from his vacation within the next 2 issues :) Well, I must say I'm more than impressed - koontz singlehandedly wrote the entire Foundry section composed of three articles for this issue! Kudos to him, for sure! Anywho, koontz has got the Foundry rundown on moved maps and dicussions, as well as the results of his little contest. Enjoy!
Victor SullivanChief Executive What's Where in the Foundry by koontz1973 show
There has been movement in the foundry since the last issue. Some maps like Eurasia have moved from the drafting room to the main foundry while others like Jakarta have been moved to the recycling bin till further notice. So lets see what's where in the foundry today.Drafting Room Just before Christmas, the announcement that maps set up for 2 player games only will now be allowed. We already have 2 maps developing for this setting in the drafting room.DiM brings us his version of a 2 player map set about a siege of a castle. You will play the attackers or defenders, both with unique game playing styles.lostatlimbo has changed his 8 player map into a 2 player map seamlessly with CONQUERSHIP. Based on the classic 2 player Battleship game.If you are a fan of two player games, get on over and give these your support. Polderland is by a new mapmaker BadgerJelly who is also new to the site. Lets hope he can bring this one home. ;) Riskmaster101 brings us a new map with an old map feel to it. Mafia is also still in the drafting room. One of the strangest maps in the foundry today is this entry by DiM. :| Not satisfied by the world maps we have, he has come up with a way to give us another one that is unique. Main Foundry Papua New Guinea by ndrs was the winner of the last foundry graphics competition. The map has changed slightly from the one that won, so have a look if you voted for this and let him know if the changes are worth keeping. Knights by koontz1973 is waiting on a final graphics look over by the foundry mods to see if anything else is needed to be done or if the style needs to change on this one. Based on the game of chess but only using the knights piece to give some converluted gameplay. The Baltic Crusades started life under theBastard who left the foundry. But his partner thenobodies80 who was helping him at the time has taken on the main duties. Giving this map some of his graphical flare. Just waiting on the small map so we should have this one very soon. Copenhagen sightseeing by FlapCake has just been moved into the main foundry to sit along side his Trench Warfair map. What would an issue be without a look at one of natty_dread maps. From humble beginnings to this one. Right now he has London and Eurasia in the foundry as well. All 3 completely different in graphics and gameplay.cairnswk , the most prolific map maker for this site has been at it again. Here is the latest map in the railway series. Previous versions include Africa, Australia, Europe, USA. Whats next for this series?Final Forge The final forge has only 3 maps in it for now (apart from the beta played maps). The newest entry is Knights & Warlocks by DiM.Click image to enlarge. Click image to enlarge. London by natty_dread has also been moved to the final forge. As always with his forward thinking, the xml has been written and just waits for its final check. Should be playing this in January some time.Click image to enlarge. Cuban Missile Crisis has just received its xml stamp. Should be the next one for beta, so keep an eye out for this masterpiece. Just incase you have not seen them yet, two maps have entered the beta period. I hope you are all enjoyingKingdom of Denmark [Beta] by Flapcake and Istanbul [Beta] by ISN2 Happy gaming everyone, whatever map takes your fancy.
Foundry News by koontz1973 show
It has been a busy few weeks over in the foundry discussion forum. Lots of opinions have been shouted from the roof tops. Lets start with the good news. :D Fractured China has been released from beta. Congratulations to isaiah40 for bringing this one home for us all. =D> =D> =D> Clandemonium is a map with many makers and has been out of beta for many months now. It is a map that has a growing following. The controversy over this map seems to of started with this post...ben79 wrote: i was wondering if it was possible to have the same deployement as on the king's court map ... i played a 1 vs 1 on clandemonium and it took at least an hour to play it i mean having only 2 starting positions instead of 5
A simply request to make and one that one of the map makers preferred.Kabanellas wrote: I'm totally ok with it :) (actually, I prefer it)
So the foundry foreman did his job with this post. ;) thenobodies80 wrote: I've updated the xml (max 2 positions for each players). Kab, if it is ok for you I'll send it to the turtle.
Kabanellas wrote: Thanks a lot NB!!!! you're the man!!!! ;)
Should this of been a problem as nobodies is also posted on the map as one of the guest makers? Well, it seems to have caused a bit of friction in the foundry. Dukasaur wrote: It's absolutely terrible.
HighlanderAttack wrote: I totally agree here--why the change--I just read back starting from August 27th and I guess I missed why it was changed anyway. I didn't think large changes occurred to quenched maps like this.
Blitzaholic wrote: hello highlanderattack and all, I was not made aware of any change, and I would hope to be included in the say since this is my concept before any changes become implemented.
So now we have a map that was great fun to play for most people, had passed through the foundry and got changed without any proper discussion. Is this the right way to do things?HighlanderAttack felt strongly about this and set up this thread to get the foundries input. What is wrong with the foundry --????????? It seems to of been sorted now with the change being reversed very quickly and HighlanderAttack and thenobodies80 are now friends who may make a special tournament map for us. :D Just think, the foundry foreman and the leading tournament winner and organizer producing a map. What fun we could all have. What constitutes a good idea for a CC map? has been started up again with the reintroduction of that Cow map. Is the cow really an animal that lends itself to a map? Pop on over and see what topics you can add to the list. It does seem some want it while others are just waiting to start pigs and fishes. Maybe one day you will get to play on Vomit or a pizza. Asia Map Touch-Up & "Name Vote" This is a map that I had not played on for a very long time, why, because it looked really bad. thenobodies80 was asked if he could make this map look any better. Not a complete revamp but just tiny touch ups to make it look nice again. He managed to produce this... What changes you ask, apart from the army circles being removed, the numbers will not sit on names, the one way attack is now visible and a few other things as well. Not bad considering he only had the png file to work with. Even a simple thing like this to make a map look nice again caused the foundry regulars to shout.DiM wrote: grifftron wrote: hope the new revamped version goes thru the foundry, i wouldn't pass it as is if i was a foundry mod.
just like any other map done backstage it probably won't pass through the foundry. however i hope at least the feedback posted here will be taken into account.
natty_dread wrote: Good point. All revamps should go through the foundry.
This little touch up of Asia brought about another thread, one that deals with the seasonal maps . Who has the right to make them and who gets involved. These maps include... St Patricks Day - Oaktown Easter - Samuelc812 Colosseum - Samuelc812 2011 WC - Samualc812 2010 WC - MrBenn Christmas - MrBenn so not many but we are sure that there are more to come. What holidays and or events deserve a map made?Behind the scenes maps: what do you think? These maps have been commissioned by the site for the players to get a surprise now and again. We had Easter in 2011 and Christmas in 2010 as well as some others. These maps are made by a few people but do not enter the foundry at all. Do we get maps that are sub par - yes, but these maps are only played once a year. How should these maps get made? In the foundry, or by a select few? Who chooses who makes these maps? Which seasons should get a map? These are the things being discussed and needs answers to. Pop on in and get your voices heard. The Beta Bounty is back on Trafalgar. So the winner of the 1805th game gets 3-months premium! This still has not been won so get playing Trafalgar and have some fun. Happy gaming everyone, whatever map takes your fancy.

Sully here for Leehar. Well, with the holidays, the Clan section is brief, I'm afraid. Thanks go to
skillusniper33 for pulling through despite these busy times! He has provided us with a briefing on Round 2 of Newcomers Cup 2. Enjoy!
Victor SullivanChief Executive NC2 Round 2 by Skillfusniper33 show
Well we have reached Round 2 of NC2 , this exciting tournament between clans. There have been some really close battles in round 1 with both LHDD and MD advancing with 21-20 victories over their opponents, and another close victory for IF winning 23-18, while 1RFG advancing easily with a score of 29-12. Two of these wins were the first for both IF and MD in their newly formed clan. Which is very exciting news, and the first win is always the most difficult, since both clans were still trying to find their groove in the clan community. Now for the round 2 match-ups we will have the excitement continue, and if things go the same way some very close wars again. First we will have Kill on Arrival (KOA) vs Manifest Destiny (MD) MD is looking to continue their success but will have a tough challenge ahead with the ever increasing skill of KOA. The first set of games were just sent out on the 29th of December, so the current score is 0-0 Tie Second we will have Dynasty (DYN) facing off vs LHDD. With LHDD coming off that extremely close victory they are going to be facing some tough opponents against DYN, but should have a fighting chance to take another close series. 0-0 Tie Third Always kicking A$$ (AKA) will be facing off Igni Ferroque (IF) With IF's first win they are looking to continue their success vs a powerful clan in AKA. But should be a very good challenge for IF to see how much they have grown with their first win. 0-0 Tie Finally we have Grimm Reapers (GR) vs 1RFG 1RFG was the first clan to advance and is looking to continue their success vs the oldest and one of the underestimated clans in this tournamet. So it should be a good one to watch. 4-2 GR leading Overall Round 2 should be just as exciting as Round 1. Congratulations to the 4 clans advancing onto round 2, also good luck to all 8 clans participating in their round 2 wars, it should be extremely fun to watch how everything will finish up and seeing who gets to go into the semi-finals.
