i know nobody is gonna believe me cause i got no proof of it but when they first released the new association plan for 2012-2013 they had a vote with all the owners, and 4 team owners decided to reject this new association plan = the 4 teams are ''probably'' ( journalist on internet and radio in canada said it was 4 of the ''original 7'') ( i put ottawa in there ) that rejected the offer since it was a nonsense for them to be cut from new york teams but be playing with florida teams( you guys know what i think about the florida teams ) .... my opinion only

Utterly stupid on the part of the NHLPA. Complete nonsense. Hope those players in Winnipeg are going to enjoy all their cross country traveling they're doing this year, because they'll be doing more of it next year too. Oh and, good luck attracting free agents to Winnipeg next year too. Nonsensical.

since the 1995 lock-out, the red wings are the best hockey franchise in the league, made the playoff every year since that date, and are always a top team in the western conference ( top 4 each year ), won 4 stanley cups since then ( best in the league ), .... that with having worst draft choices year after year than most teams ( datsyuk, zetterberg both 6th and 7th rounders ) lucky? i say no ...

p.s. : montreal are only 2 points from the 15th place in east .... hopefully the team will made some good choices for the next hockey season ( i don't want to finish 9th or 10th in the east )

Blind faith in your team is great. It pays their salaries, really. Else the Canucks, Sens, and Leafs would have all gone bankrupt. :D

But the Cup? You've now left the real world and entered... the Twilight Zone... :geek:

That's pretty remarkable. Just out of curiosity, how many of those were OT wins? Does this record need an asterisk beside it?

I think 4 of them were. So go ahead and add your cute little asterisk. I know people are going to use that to try to diminish the record, but I say; if it's so much easier to do it now, with the benefit of OT and shootouts, why is it that since ties were eliminated, the longest streak before this one was Boston in 2008-2009, winning only 14? Any way you cut it, this record IS impressive.

It's just as easy to lose in a shootout ass it is to win in a shootout.

I'm not trying to downplay the achievement. As I said "It is remarkable."

But the fact is that because they don't allow ties to stand, it is now possible to extend a winning streak where they would have been recorded as ties in the past (not too long ago they didn't even play overtime when there was a regulation time tied score).

So it's really hard to equate the "pre-overtime era" record with the "overtime era" record. That's a fact that can't really be argued, unless all the wins come in regulation time.

Pavel Datsyuk scores with 5 seconds left, as Detroit defeats Nashville 2-1, and runs their home winning streak to 22 consecutive games.

The old record was set by the Bruins in 1930. If the shootout/tie thing was an issue,
it would still be an unbeaten streak at home.

Yeah, to equate the two, you would have to compare the "unbeaten at home in regulation time" streak. The 2011/12 Red Wings might have that record...

The other option is a "Winning streak in regulation time at home" streak. With 4 regulation time ties, the 2011/12 Red Wings probably are far from having that record (but I don't know what games they got a tie in...assuming they were spread out, they are probably only at 5 or 6 or 7 for that streak...).

It's quite a streak, either way.

Just a comment on the Wings winning streak, as remarkable as it is, I think that we should look at how many home games without loosing as opposed to winning home games, to give justice to the pre-overtime record.
34 home games without loosing in 76-77 for habs.

That would be the "unbeaten at home in regulation time" streak I was talking about.

The fact that the Red Wings have won all their overtime games only means that this new record cannot really be equated to any old record (for instance, you can't be sure the 76-77 Habs would have won all their overtime games if they had to play them).

The fact is, no record can be compared to any other record from another era. Take goals scored. You can say that that "scoring is scoring", and make an argument that based on goals scored, Gretzky is greater than Howe. But you have no idea how Gretzky would have held up in a rougher era, nor how greater strides in fitness, and a watered-down over all talent pool would have helped Gordie's game. Who was the better goalie, Terry Sawchuk, or Patrick Roy? Better defenseman, Bobby Orr, or Nick Lidstrom? There will always be debates, and the fact is, because you cannot compare these players head-to-head, there will never be a definitive way to say who's greater. But that is just part of what makes sports fun. In fact, arguments rage from annually over who the best players are in any given year.

The Wings have taken advantage of modern day rules, and set a record. Can we accurately compare them to previous eras? Not at all. But in this modern era, no one comes close, and that on it's own is impressive.
