Those pressures were just opportunities to "never let a crisis go to waste". Those pressures could have been addressed without growing the federal government. The free market will address needs nearly all the time, and much more frequently than what the government allows it to currently.

I see what you're asking, Neoteny. You've got some great questions, and I'll respond later. The "power-grabbing" factors are related to the formation and reinforcement of cultural attitudes toward appealing to, thus empowering, the national government, so that it can further expand.

America is not a progressive country. We are quite the opposite actually.
