The Scum Insider Newbie Help Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information, Mafia and You, and Rules and Terms of Mafia. Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you. What is "Mafia"? Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town. Mafia News Continuing with the novel mafia game theme, pancakemix has started a new game based on creating your own character. Should be interesting what kinds of characters everyone playing chooses. / also has a game where everyone has an opportunity to be the mod and impose crazy rules on everyone else. Mafia Callouts Calling all players interested! Some mafia games need some filling: Sign-ups: Seeking Replacements: Consult the Replacement Thread to see what games are in need of reserves/replacements. Now get out there and investigate Mafia for yourself: viewforum.php?f=213 Advanced Roles and Strategy by safariguy5 A role that can really mess with the night actions is discussed this issue. The Lightning Rod What is It? The Lightning Rod is a role that automatically becomes the target of all night actions. If the night action has more than one target, it randomly becomes one of the targets. This role may be told to the player or it could be unknown to the player. Example Jack is the Lightning Rod. John tries to kill Sam and Alice tries to save Bob. John ends up trying to kill Jack and Alice ends up saving Jack. How to Play this Role The Lightning Rod is most likely Town or Third Party due to possible balance issues if given to mafia. If someone is the Lightning Rod, it is a difficult role to play because both Town and Mafia will be trying to get rid of the Lightning Rod at some point. The Lightning Rod invalidates most night actions on both sides, so it's probably best not to reveal one is the Lightning Rod unless one has a plan for winning.

Q. What is your favourite historical era?
What is my favorite historical era? Let me say first that since this is probably the shortest interview on record and since the point of this whole thing is to get to know some more things about who I am and what I am about, I will use this forum to it's fullest extent so that for those who are interested in learning about me, you shall have it. If I could to pick an era as my favorite, It would have to be the first century BC. To the first century AD. Because of this Jewish person Jesus Christ, who claimed to be God and for that reason alone was crucified to a cross by Rome at the insistence of the religious leaders of the time. For that alone, because this God/Man walked on the earth during that ere. When I think of this, if it were anyone else, the religious leaders of the time would have said that he was simply insane or had a demon possession, and it would have gone no further. But for them to kill a supposedly “crazy person” only leads me to believe and it lends credence to the fact that Jesus Christ had to be God incarnated in the flesh. Otherwise we would never even have known about this supposedly "crazy" Jesus Christ person, today. And by the way in those days you could not kill a crazy person or a demon possessed person. That is why there were so many of them around. It was against moral and legal laws to even touch harshly a crazy person. So why did they not just say he was crazy for claiming to be God? Because they also believe it was true. Because he spoke with authority and not as a crazy person or one of the religious hypocrites of the day. He also heal people of their infirmities and if that were not true then why do we count the years after his death? “What if God were one of us? If he lived like one of us?” VIDEO But while this would be my favorite historical era as far as choosing an era, it would not be my favorite historical era to live in; Just to watch God die on a cross for the sins of us all. No, right now is my favorite historical era in which to live in. I have often wondered what it would have been like to live through the American Civil War Era or the Great Depression of the 1930's or any of those times when man's survival instincts were put to the test. Sure many had to die but ultimately as a people and as a Nation we survived. We pulled together and forged stronger alliances with our neighbors to the point where we did not even need locks on our doors or needed to be afraid of our own neighbors. But today is a completely different world. Today we face perhaps the greatest onslaught of tragedies that man will ever face in all of mankind's history on this planet. The things that man is capable of doing and will do very shortly, will change us forever, at the very core of our existence. It will mark humanity for ever. Should we survive it? For the first time in human history we have the potential to Annihilate all of humanity from the face of the planet with a variety of Nuclear and Biological weapons. For the first time in human history have we tied all of our fates together in one universal economic system and become so dependent on it. For the first time in history have this world's religion ever had so much power to influence the masses through television and radio media. It seems like it is all coming together for one final slap in humanities face with “religious wars” leading the way. Yet as the power of universal religion is on the rise and once again humanity will face the worse kind of wars, those of religious backing; And the World economy hangs teetering over a cliff like a school bus that lost control, ever ready to fall off of the cliff taking all of us with it; And North Korea and other nations just itching to launch some of their nuclear and biological arsenal, just asking for a reason to go to war; Yet some things stay the same. Most people do not realize this but Europe is uniting in such a way as never before that will leave us all flabbergasted with our mouths opened wide in awe. A new Roman Empire will soon take shape and Germany seems to be leading the way. Could this be a fourth Reich? Or a New Holy Roman Empire about to crash the party in world scene. What ever it may be, it will dominate the world like no “Bonus Monkey” ever has. Greater than anything that humanity has ever faced before, the soon coming era on this planet will see so much action, adventure and drama unfold as literally Billions of human lives will come to a quick and sudden end and the remainder left to suffer and try to tweak out a survival through it all. At the same time we are also presently destroying the environment and all sea life through Oil spills and Radiation from Nuclear Power plants. The truth of the extent of the damage is just not being reported to a hysterical population. There has never been a time like this before and I seriously doubt that we shall ever see a time like this again. What is just ahead for us and our posterity and most likely will never come again is the epithet of what we really are in nature. It will be terrible to witness and horrible to behold but it will also be the most exciting time in history to be alive in and to watch and to witness and to behold with one's own eyes. And should we survive the initial war that is about to break out suddenly and without warning on an unsuspecting humanity, then we shall also see not only how people will kill one another but also how they will show compassion and pull together as well in an effort to survive. I can not travel back in time to see how people pulled together to survive the Holocaust or the Great Depression or the American Civil war that killed more people then WWI, WWII, The Vietnam and Korean wars all put together, but I will go through this era or I will die in it. But before I die, I will see it with my own eyes. I will, with any hope, witness all those end time prophecies just about to come together and unfold right before our very eyes. And that will be a terrible and at the same time a most exciting time to be alive in.
"10. More men died in the Civil War than any other American conflict, and two-thirds of the dead perished from disease.
Approximately 625,000 men died in the Civil War, more Americans than in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War combined.
http://www.history.com/news/2011/05/10/ ... war-facts/ So what is my favorite era in history? [to be alive in] The one that we will all be a part of very soon. The one that is just about to unfold. Q. Who? What? When? Where? How? (be creative) What was the question Q. How different is CC strategy [different] from actual military strategy? I would not know much about that as I was never in the military or studied military strategy. But I would imagine that just the psychological factors alone make for one big difference. It can never be the same losing lives than losing points. Q. Which historical military strategist do you think would be the best overall CC player and why? First let me say that I believe that modern day generals if alive back then with the knowledge that they possess now would certainly put to shame any of the historical great leaders of the past. Simply because they studied the past and also Psychological Warfare and many things that were perhaps not considered then. Today's Generals do not need to play at Conquer Club for they play the real deal. The Romans were the mightiest armies of their time. Cruel and vicious, their empire lasted for over a thousand years but everything they knew they learned from the Greeks before them, who learned it from the Persians before them, who learned it from the Babylonians, who learned it from the Assyrians.... So it was all built on past knowledge. So today's Military leaders would simply have to be the best. If asked which modern military leader, I would say General Patton because he really kicked ass in Europe and Germany (WWII). But which historical leader as in of the past... I would have to go with Cyrus the Great. The First Medo/Persian Emperor was the one who built the empire that Alexander had conquered. He built it not by taking it but by giving it to his subjugates. This was something that had never been done before and will most likely never done again. Cyrus did not see himself as a conqueror but as a liberator of nations from their tyrannical rulers. It was Cyrus who freed the Israelite slaves from Babylon and even help them to rebuild their temple and their city of Jerusalem. So if anyone would become the CC Conqueror and hold that title indefinitely, it would seem to me that it would have to be this Genius who with original thinking and much diplomacy formed an empire by freeing others rather than by enslaving them to his will. Q. Are you really a viceroy? Or are you a vice-Roy? If so, will you ever be El Roy? No; I am not really a Viceroy. I believe that originally Viceroy is a brand of Cigarettes from the 1960's or so. The Term “Viceroy” is used in the Star Trek Movie, “Nemesis” and means pretty muck like Lord, or "2nd" At least according to the movie. The 63 is the year in which I was born. I think it's too late for me to be an El Roy or even have an El Roy. But in Spanish El Roy means, “The Roy.” So I don't think that I will ever be “The Roy!” But it's sound like a pretty cool title to shoot for. "THE ROY!" Q. What are your favorite ingredients on a sandwich? A pizza? Lasagna? Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Classified Secrets will not be discussed in this interview. Sorry. Q. Mexican or Chinese? Sorry for the confusion mate; I am Puerto Rican. Q. What's your favorite drink? Water mostly. But sometimes when I get a little crazy, I throw in a bit of Tang Drink Mix and some ice. Then it's like, Watch out babe! Q. What happened to the first 62 Viceroys? They were eliminated from the game. It was their own fault. They were doing well until Trench Warfare came around and they could not grasp the totally new concept of the game. I kept telling them, "Stacks are useless, focus on an area and consolidate your forces." But they would not listen to me and kept dropping 1 to E6 and 2 to N5 and so on and when I came around I just had to eliminate them all. Sorry. Q. In a game between Escalating players and No Spoils players on Flat Rate, who wins? I have to go with the No Spoils because you really need to have a set of balls on ya to go up against Escalating. And if the balls are that big, just imagine the smell of testosterone? Q. What's been your favorite CC game so far? The one where I win. Some may have noticed that I play on the classic map a lot but only because I want to learn that map first so well that I can play it in my sleep. I may finally be reaching that point with the old settings. Now with the new Trench setting which really have me involved, you can expect to see me play even more classic games in the trench setting. I believe that truly understanding a map and the settings is the key to victory. And in the end practice always makes perfect. I also think that I may one day write a series of very short articles about the secrets of Classic. I will of course need to run my thoughts by some of the instructors for confirmation but I believe that they will agree with me since they are the ones who helped me to understand it all. Q. Are you still mad that I (macbone) never return your phone calls? OK; All joking aside. Yes, I was mad at you but only for the night. But as the evening wore old and my eyes grew tired, I went to sleep that night realizing the truth that,... ... “Tomorrow is another day!” =) “And quite frankly my dear, I don't give a damn!” Q. Have you ever thought about designing a map in the Foundry? If so, what theme/battle/location would you like to develop? Now this is a good question for me. I am a Star Trek fan. If I could do a map it would definitely have to be the Cardasian Occupation of Bajor. With DS9 as the source or center of the map along with the planet Bajor to the side and the planet of Bajor and it's moons to one side and the Federation Fleet mixing it up with the Cardasians in space warfare on the other side of the map. Oh, and lets not forget that worm hole and those prophet cubes/cylinders. You just win the game if you get all of those. Q. Marx Brothers or Three Stooges? Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Classified Secrets will not be discussed in this interview. Sorry. Q. What's your favorite Coen brothers film? It is really interesting and scary at the same time, to see all of the little things that you folks have picked up and learned about me in just a matter of months. I guess that we really are a closed knit society here at CC. =) I only recently discovered or was made to realize that there does exist, “The Coen Brothers.” The only movie that I have seen so far is the one in the Youtube. I really enjoyed it immensely. Especially the first few opening scenes where these guys are asking, “Where's the money Lebowsky; Where's the money?” All the time they are shoving his head in the toilet and not letting him talk. Lol. Finally when they do let him say something, he says, “It's got to be down there some where, let me go down for another look.” Lol. VIDEO VIDEO Q. Who would win in a chess tournament featuring you, Victor Sullivan, Dhallmeyer, Andy Dufresne, Dukasaur, and GLG? I don't know for sure? Every time that I start a game it goes unfinished. It's your move by the way in our last game. =) But I would admit the fact that I am pretty good at playing chess. I only play two openings, The Queens Gambit with white and the aggressive Sicilian with black, with or without the fianchetto bishop for Black. It is the fact that I only learned these two Strategies that allowed me to become so good at them. Although there are many who are better then me I'm sure. It is sort of the same thing like learning only one map in Conquer Club. If you play the same map all the time then sooner or later you are bound to learn it's secrets and excel in that map. Of course learning the strategy also helps and that is what the SoC is for. I really learned a lot from the SoC and still am. Anyone can learn to play this game but not everyone is willing to learn the details of the details of the details of the Strategies and the maps. And that is really what makes for the wins. And of course luck has a say in it also but you also make the good luck happen by being ready for it. And that takes strategy and knowing the maps as well. I think it was Mr. Mya-gi from the movie, “The Karate Kid” who said, “Trust in the quality of what you know and not the quantity of what you know.” Any game that we play comes down to that. What we know and understand about it. So who's ever understanding of the games is greater, either at chess or World domination, then they are the one's who will most likely win the games. Q. That should be Whom or What. Discuss. crazymilkshake5 wrote:Who? What? When? Where? How? (be creative) I'm sorry, Whom or What was the question again? Q. Now that MGSteve has taught you the finer points of trench warfare, do you think there will be trench tournaments in the future on CC, or will it go the way of the dinosaur? No offense, Dukasaur. I do believe that I did mention in one of the treads, about an Entertainment Section sponsored Tournament but I could be mistaken. I think that once I learn how those tourney's are done, that I may try to host one. I'm not sure though. First we have to figure out just how many dedicated trench players there really are. Maybe someone should start a thread on that? I know however that there are a few tournaments because I was invited and I said yes. I am playing in one now and from what I can tell the people are all very enthusiastic about it so far. I don't think that Trench Warfare will be gone anytime soon. I don't know exactly what the percentages of players are, Trench vs Non Trench, but most things that start out small, also end up big. Just like an Oak Tree. From a tiny little Oak Nut grows this huge tree that provides a home for so many different kinds of creatures. That's how Trench Warfare will be like one day on Conquer Club. So I think that Yes; Trench Tournament games will become a more popular scene in CC. Just like the snow ball effect, Trench games are bound to get more and more popular as more people come to understand the new Strategies of the game. There may even be an SoC for Trench Games one day, once we have most of the strategies all figured out. But surely there are more strategies in Trench then in regular CC games so that it would be a major under taking. The only thing about Trench games is that they are for more of a patient type of a person. Being able the see the end from a mile away is not an easy thing for a person with no patience. It also makes for a lot of deadbeat players. One thing is for sure and that is that trench games of the future will not be like the trench games now. Right now they take too long and a 70% troops and Territories system will have to be devised for regular standard trench games at least. Q. What is your favorite RTS game series? CC doesn't count. I actually do not have one. I only recently discovered the world of the internet. A few years ago I was on my space but then my laptop broke and I did not have the resource nor the inclination to fix my very first computer. Now I am Back and by sheer luck came across Conquer Club. I also know of another "Risk" site but it can't even hold a candle to CC. Q. If you could ..........., would you? Or would you feel guilty afterwards and have to confess later on in life? If the question is simply if I could....? Then the answer is, No I would not in the first place what ever it is that we are asking about. If something is morally wrong then it is totally wrong and I would not take any part of anything wrong. Even if to my own hurt. I am not an Angel but I am a mature adult and I have learned from this life and am grateful to my God for the quality of what I know and have been taught. Q. Whats the longest you have spent planning a move only to have the dice stitch you up good and proper, leaving you wishing you had just clicked and hoped? I think that I sometimes overly think my moves. I gain great pleasure in overly thinking my moves but I do not let the dice gods interfere with my games. I pray to a God that is bigger then the dice gods and so I have the advantage in that. As to the longest amount of time that I have spent thinking about a move? The answer to that would have to be; 23 Hours and 55 minutes. Almost missed my turn that day. I used to look at a game and then go away and come back to it to see it with new eyes sort to say. As a rule I now play my games before the final 4 to 6 hours left in the turn. And as to the dice “stitching” me up; I never use right click. Not anymore. That is how the dice gods get you. When you win with right click you win big but when you lose with right click you lose just as big. I go with the regular click because that way I conserve the 55% win ratio equally among all my plays more evenly distributed. Even though in the long run and after many years it may all be just the same. Q. Are you related to General Roy? I would be proud to be related to a General Roy of that stature. But... Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Classified Secrets will not be discussed in this interview. Sorry. Are you an ass or breast man? I am trying to be a vegetarian, I don't eat those kinds of animals. Besides Donkey meat is hard to chew. Q. Donde esta la Zapateria? Buenos, sigue la carretera come tres luces mas pa lante. Vas a ver un puente, sigue por debajo de esse puente y la primera boca calle que vez, hace una derecha y parqueate rapido ahi. La Zapateria estas a cruzar la calle donde indica el letrero, "Zapateria!" --- De nada. Q. Why? Why ask why? Q. What Vices do you have? Thank God that I have over come most if not all of my vices in life, in my mature age years. The only ones left are vices of not having or being humble enough or giving enough of a person. But give it time. I am not dead yet and I am making great strides in those direction. Or better said, My God is making great strides in me in those direction. Q. Which is your favorite? I debated with myself about whether or not to answer this one and just post that OSS classified information would not be discussed but perhaps it is for the best within my soul to answer this quesion. Which "WAS" my favorite is more like it. Or better still, Which ones really had me enslaved to their will! I think that all vices are pleasures that we surrender our souls to in exchange for a fleeting moment of Ecstasy which in the long run is just a lie. I guess in my case it was the drinking and drugging. I could escape the pains of life for a while and just forget it all as I committed a form of slow suicide in the bottle. But I thank God that I am awake now and full of understanding. I finally understand who and what God is and just who and what I really am and more importantly why. And knowing this makes all the difference in the world. I have been sober now since about 2004-06 or so, I don't really remember as I was probably all drugged and drunk at the time. So no more vices for me. I am the Lord of my vice and not the other way around. Q. What is your favorite car? That would have to be the MUVs (Multi Ulitility Vehicle's). Because it's a family people car and I am into families. It is better to make sacrifices for others then not to have anyone to love. Q. What is your favorite Color? Red; Because it brings out the blue in your eyes. Q. What is your favorite Food? Rice; Because it goes great with beans. Q. What is your favorite Drink? Water on the rocks; Shaken not stirred. Q. What is your favorite TV Show? And why? Like I said earlier, I am a Star Trek fan and so Star Trek is my all time favorite show. In particular Star Trek (The Next Generation), but I love them all. Now as to the why, well it's different with each type of Star Trek show. For example to be perfectly honest, I use to enjoy the kind of brotherhood, private club mentality portray in The Original Series but looking back now I see that I can't really enjoy them the same way. I've grown beyond that 60's mentality. But all the shows have something in common and that is that they can and do portray certain aspects of social values and social behavior with out really making a kind of statement for any particular case. In many of the shows, Racism is addressed to a certain point and they may even take a true Racial incident that appeared on the news and reenact it to a degree but not get involved in that particular case. Instead of beating up on a black or a white by either a militant or supremest human, earthly group, it's an alien being or a race of mutants or an entire planet like the Bajorans who were ruthlessly dominated by the cruel Cardasian Slave Masters and force to work the trillium mines on Ocus 4 or the mining refinery on DS9. The names and place may change but the issues are the same. Q. Did I (trinicardinal) ask Why? Yes you did. And Thank you for the question. Q. What did you have for dinner last night? I had rice and beans with a salad on the side. And I washed it down with water on the rocks, Shaken and not stirred. Thanks for your time Viceroy! You are all welcome and I thank you for allowing me to share some of myself and my thoughts and beliefs with you all. I also want to give a special thanks to Dim, Leehar and just everyone else who made this article possible and contributed to this work. Thank You All.

Also in this issue we learn of the most important first move that we can make in any setting, in any game. Patience is a commodity in the very first move. So be sure to read, "The Very First Move In Any Game" by me, Viceroy63.

Viceroy63 Strategy Executive Video Walk Though: Oasis by crazymilkshake5
Hey all! I have done something that no man has done before! I have SHOWN you an article! Yes! shown you. so please watch the strategy Guide I have made to the map Oasis! Unfortunately I don't win this game due to a bum roll. But if you watch the second video It shows me winning. (I would suggest you watch it in 720p and/or full screen.)
VIDEO Me Winning using the same strategy: VIDEO The Very First Move In Any Game by Viceroy63
The Very First Move In Any Game by Viceroy63 We humans naturally learn to walk before we learn to run. And before we learn to walk we learn to crawl. When we finally take our first steps they are always small baby steps and never leaps and bounds. This seems to be the pattern for us. There are however, always exceptions to this rule. Wild animals like horses for example are on their feet walking within minutes of being born but still can't run as fast as their mother's. And on the other extreme, Dogs are even born blind and completely helpless and dependent on their mother just like humans are. So what is the point? That in all things there seems to be a natural progression of things. All things according to their own rules of developing and none ever severely skips their pattern. Even in our games their must of necessity be an opening move that you just can't neglect. A move that, while it does not seem all that important is so very vital to the development of your game. In the SoC we refer to it as "Deploy only" Rule! But this move is not just for the SoC games but for any and all games. Whether Regular CC games or Trench; Escalating Spoils or No Spoils, Deploying only is the best first move that you can do and in this short article we shall briefly examine why. Any military strategist can tell you that unless you have some kind of an advantage in the attack then the best thing to do is to gang up on the assault. This means that we increase our numbers by at least a factor of 2 to 1. But if 2 to 1 is good then should not 3 or more to 1 be even better? Of course by all means. Consider this in the very first move; Keep in mind that all of these examples are with the auto setting and not the manual one: You get 3 troops on your very first turn and you deploy them to a region that also has 3 troops because in an auto setting all regions automatically get 3 troops. So now you have 6 troops on your region and should be able to safely conquer the target region with only 3 troops on it, 54% of the assaulting times. That's because those are the odds for the attackers with three dice vs. two dice. That means that the defender has a 46 chance of all the times (per roll) of winning or defending with success. But what we don't realize is that we as the attacker only get to commit two strikes in a 6 troop vs. 3 troop scenario and if those two strikes are the very first two rolls that we lose, then we are out. That's because with multiple dice we could end up losing two troops at a time. So if we lose two times, two troops per roll, then the odds jump dramatically against us in that third roll where the dice are now 2 vs. 2 and the attack no longer has an advantage. And if we lose two consecutive rolls in a row and we also lose four troops in total on that very first move then that is the same as not receiving any troops at all on our first turn. In fact we lose one troop in our very first move of the game if we lose two rolls in a row. Many discover this painful fact too often the very, very hard way. Another comparison is to the fact that we also lose our very first move option should we lose that initial assault. So what can be done to improve our odds of success on the first turn? Not assault on the first turn! That is to say, to just build up and wait for the next turn to assault. This alone will greatly influence our winning chances at the attack; On the second turn. If in the very first turn we can even combine two connected regions of three's instead, so as to have 5 troops in one region and 1 troop in the other (of the two) and we drop our 3 troops in the region with 5 troops then we have 8 troops there just waiting to conquer on the second turn. On the second turn you then add your 3 troops for that turn on to those 8 troops and you come up with a force of 11 troops on that one region able to take on any of the regions around it. 11 troops vs. 3 troops are in fact awesome odds. But that only happens if we have the patience to take those first baby steps of deploying only on the very first move and then just wait for round two. Everything developing at it's natural course and speed. If you try to rush it by attacking on the first turn, then you are just playing the odds. And the odds are really just 50/50. --- Current SoC Training Fields Winners List by Viceroy63

Hello again my friends, and welcome to your favorite part of the Newsletter, "War Games", where you can find information about CC Tournaments! We have a couple of very important articles this time. One is targetted towards tournament organisers, and the other is targetted towards tournament players.
continues his long-running series of Tournament Tips. This time, he covers the subject of how to extract a list of CC's maps from the site to your Excel spreadsheet. I advise all TO's to sit up and pay attention to this one because choosing maps is one of our most important tasks in building tournaments, and having your own customizable database of maps is the first step towards doing this efficiently.
covers the subject of Tournament Etiquette. Sometimes simple courtesies can go a long way to making the whole tournament experience better for everyone, and I urge everyone to read James' words of wisdom.
has been overwhelmed by his duties in real life, and will no longer be writing TPA Wrapup. If you are a TPA player or organiser, I would love to see you apply for a reporter's job here. (Warning: the pay is lousy. On the plus side, it can be a lot of fun!)
Next issue we begin our new Meet the Tournament Directors series, to complement our Meet the Tournament Winners and Meet the Tournament Organisers. I've begun an interview with Tournament Comissioner
which I hope to unveil then!
Dukasaur Tournament Executive Tournament Tips by DaveH
show: List of CC maps
Many tournament organisers want to use all of CC's maps, so in this issue I'll show you how to create a full list of CC maps in Excel. Actually there are two ways of copying the full list of 209 maps- the first is that you can type them all in
and the second is the one that I'll explain below - as it is a little easier! There is a list of CC maps in the Completed Map section of the Forum: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=358&t=79067 You can copy and paste this list into Excel. Unfortunately they have additional information appended to them, so I'll show you an easy way of extracting the map name. Copy the list - but do not copy the map number, which would make the extraction a little more complex. To avoid including the numbers, copy across in two blocks, 1-99 and 100-209 (or whatever the last one is when you do this) and highlight just the maps. When copied, the data starts off as follows:
Classic (2006-01-03 04:20:04) - Classic Shapes | Classic Art - Classic (Wed Dec 30, 2009 8:48 pm)
Asia (Far East) (2006-01-03 12:54:45) - Far East (2012-02-07 11:34) USA (2006-01-04 06:00:48) Middle East (2006-03-14 19:32:33) - Middle East (Mon May 21, 2007 2:04 am) Canada (2006-03-23 15:05:47) - Canada (Sun Oct 28, 2007 12:58 am) Europe (2006-03-23 15:26:19) Firstly you should remove the hyperlinks that may keep taking you back to your browser. In a blank cell enter 1 and copy the cell. Select the column with the map list in it and select Edit/Paste Special and select operation = Multiply. Click OK and you are done. Now to extract the names. Excel has a useful function called "Find" which finds the position in text of a character or characters. We need to find the position of the bracket, "(". We are therefore going to copy the Left most characters up to 2 characters before the "(". This code is: (assuming that the map list is in column B starting at B3) Code: Select all
Copy this code down alongside the map list and all the map names will be extracted apart from a few marked "#VALUE!" for which the date has been written in the next line due to a marker character in the text. For these just copy a space and bracket next to the map name " (" and delete the next line with the date information in it. If you come across and other small marker characters ("?") just select and delete. There are some "- Limited Edition" maps such as the Christmas maps that you may want to edit to exclude the limited edition title and a few maps that have later editions in which their names were changed. There is a way of using Excel Visual Basic coding to find out if there is a second or third edition of any maps, but it is complex and better is to check down the list and change the names manually - should you want to. The names are not that different anyway, as far as I have observed. Now we have a full set of maps with a few that may have earlier names than the ones that are now in play. These map names in formula format, so you want to select and copy this list and Edit/Paste Special selecting Paste=Values to get them in text format. You can then sort as you wish. Just a quick note on another way of getting to the current list of CC maps. Select "Game Finder". Right Click on your mouse to bring up a menu and select "View Game Source". Game source code is the coding behind what appears on your screen and so contains a full list of maps that you can copy, starting with Classic i.e. <option value="1" >Classic</option>. You can copy and paste and get rid of the extraneous text using similar techniques to those above. (These "tips" are ones that I have tried to make it a bit easier in managing my own tournaments. I am sure there are different and better methods than these, so please let me know. Any queries on the above I'll be glad to respond to! Please note that I use Excel 2003, so there may be variation in the menu instructions if you have Excel 2007) Let's Be Players: Tournament Etiquette by WorldCup4James
Tournaments add another dimension to gaming at Conquer Club, raising the stakes from just competing for points (enticing as they are for some of us
) to struggling for the pinnacle of the standings board. For those of you thinking about upping your CC experience, here's some keys to not only enjoying but also contributing, by your superior sportsmanship, to an enriching tournament. Play Strong: Commitment Organisers, managers, administrators at any level rely on commitment in order to succeed. Not only does this mean, of course, commitment by the TO but also by each and every player. Know the Length of the Tournament Most organisers will indicate the length of the tournament; current organisers are required to design the tournament such that it should be finished within a year (reasonably). Some tournaments last only a month or two, but some do last 12 months, and even longer. Therefore, only sign up for a tournament if you are sure that you can continue accepting invites in the future, until the tournament ends or until you are eliminated. Don't hesitate to send a message to the organiser if you want to know exactly how long the tournament should last. Finding a reserve for a player who failed to show up is every TO's nightmare because it requires him or her to contact a reserve and send invites, slowing the progress of the tournament. A player may need to be recruited, delaying the tournament further. As a result, it is absolutely imperative that players join games in a timely manner and consistently over the extent of the tournament. You'll need to access Conquer Club every day. If you absolutely have to leave a tournament, it should be done in a friendly manner; be sure to tell the organiser; it's a sign of good sportsmanship. Try to think ahead: if it will be impossible for you to continue in the tournament, try to tell the TO as far in advance as possible. It's much easier for the organiser to plan ahead how to replace someone than to scramble for replacements once games have been made and invitations are waiting! Just don't vanish like a ghost... Look Over Tournament Updates: Regularly Check the Tournament Page and Keep an Eye on Your Inbox Organisers make regular updates in tournaments; be sure to at least skim any details that the organiser makes available, whether they are posts on the tournament page or private messages. It only takes a matter of seconds since organisers generally clearly indicate important details, and this can save you a lot of time down the road. If you ever are wondering how to access the tournament page, simply go to any one of your tournament games, and then click on the name of the tournament, which is written in Helpful Tip: directly above the map. This will link you directly to the tournament homepage! blue Communication is Key "Trust, but Verify" The quote by U.S. President Ronald Reagan applies in the sense that players should not hesitate to ask questions about the tournament and question on any errors in the standings. This is a sign of good sportsmanship, especially if the error has actually given you an unfair and incorrect lead in the standings. Rules can be notoriously vague, so don't be afraid to ask questions. TOs acknowledge feedback as a way to constantly improve the experience they offer. Tournament organisers are human and make mistakes, so it's much better to point out the mistake before it's too late or the consequences of the error accumulate and delay or upset the tournament. It is also wise to report tournament results; while organisers of course keep an eye on all games and log results, they can fail to record games, so verifying the result of a game can never hurt! Just a quick post to the extent of 'I won Game XYZ' is all it takes! Be Courteous to Other Competitors Though, every now and then, a tournament offers premium membership for winning, tournaments are NOT designed to create hostility and enemies! Enjoy the game, take the game seriously, but respect the outcome, especially in tournaments. If another player is causing problems, for instance by refusing to take turns, you can most certainly raise the issue in a private message to the organiser so that appropriate action can be taken, if necessary. Acknowledge the Hard Work Not many players publicly congratulate the winner of a tournament. Considering the skill it takes to advance through numerous obstacles, despite how much luck the winner had, it can be rewarding to congratulate the winner of the tournament by posting on the tournament page and even in a private message. You just might make a new friend on Conquer Club! The same stands for tournament organisers; they are not paid and are exuding their passion for Conquer Club through their dedication (free of charge). Positive feedback is a great reward for TOs, and they may reward you by sending you exclusive invites to brand-new tournaments. In recent times, some TOs are even starting tournaments in honor of other players! You never know just what can happen when you give a free "Thank you." Those are the basics of Tournament Player Etiquette. If you'd like to know even more about the world of tournaments, check out the Conquer Club Tournament Handbook.

Conquership – a 2-player game of naval strategy by thehippo8
Maybe it’s because I have an interest in the subject, or maybe it’s an obsession, but I’ve written a couple of articles on copyright stuff. Usefully, that means I need not repeat any of that here! But something caught my eye when Natty Dread said: I don't think anyone has a copyright on the battleship game. Well, I’ve never been too keen on thinking and wanted to know the answer for sure. The “truth” as we know it “Truth” in law is that which is provable to the requisite standard. In civil law, the standard is the balance of probabilities. That is to say, there is a preponderance of evidence which would tend to support one proposition over another – or words to that general effect. In other words, the truth is pretty much whatever you want it to be so long as you have more “proof” than the other chap. “Proof” can include actual physical evidence or inferences from known facts. So ... here goes. The Wikipedia article, the the BoardgameGeek.com website, the BoardGames.About.Com website and a miscellaneous lone voice, to name but four examples, all say that a mysterious individual called Clifford Von Wickler in the early 1900s invented the game on paper but (inexplicably you might think) he chose not to patent it. Somehow the game thereafter enters the public domain and in 1943 Milton Bradley distributed it as a paper and pencil game. But being an innovative company, it didn’t take long for Milton Bradley to turn this into a three dimensional plastic version with ships and pegs and In 1967, Classic Battleship came to life. In 2009 a new version came out, the Classic version not re-published and Super Invisible got grumpy. Indeed, see the wiki, there is a whole family tree that follows from the Classic Battleship game: But, grumpiness aside, does any of this story really stack up? Who would have invented something (let alone the only thing they ever invented) without patenting it in the early 1900s? Why is the invention shrouded in, if not a lack of detail, in secrecy? How did the game get into the public domain with enough interest to capture Milton Bradley’s interest? Why didn’t the mysterious Clifford not complain? And is this really the only version of the game that came into existence? Well, as you may have guessed it, this mystery has a few unsolved portions. Indeed, it is reasonable to surmise that the “official story” is likely bumpkin. An alternate reality You may not be surprised to find that there is a more likely explanation. Somewhat before Milton Bradley’s Classic Battleships game, there were some earlier versions. Milton Bradley itself had a game called Broadside Naval Battle Game, which came out in 1962. There a really good description of it here. But Richard Hogan reckons that there wasn’t even a person called Clifford Von Wickler (quoting Theodor Lauppert (also a strangely mysterious figure) and the suggestion is that it may be a misspelling of Van Wickler but that at any rate the person has no footprint outside of the story he invented the game. Mind you, in an alternate reality BruhnDK talks about his grandfather owning a patent before Milton Bradley published Broadside. However, methinks we can forget about that given the thread set out there points to even earlier patents – this one in 1956 and this one in 1936. Interestingly, Richard Hogan has a reference to Salvo: The Game of Wits, a 1931 of the Starex Novelty Company, Inc., of New York being held at the National Heritage Museum: And there lies the most likely answer. The National Heritage Museum website notes:
While the exact origin of the game is uncertain, some sources suggest that Russian soldiers invented it shortly after World War I.
Which makes a huge amount of sense to me. Why wouldn’t Russian Soldiers come up with a war game, presumably based on the recently invented Radar (a full working version was demonstrated in 1934) and their old friend the Chess board (the Russians dominated the Chess world throughout this period)! Well, I'm sure it's lost in time now, but I'd love to know the full story. Which Russians? How did the game come to America? Was there a defection involved? Were their military secrets? Were the bullets sprayed against the house rrelated? Oh but the mystery just deepens!! And I will not be the one to solve it!! So, back to the scene of the crime This article began with Conquership, the copyright thing was a diversion. At least one thing is certain, there’s no worries here with copyright violation!! So, back to the map itself – and I must say that I’m pleased that Lostatlimbo and Victor Sullivan stuck with the Classic Battleship and didn’t get all fancy on it. Anyway, here’s my HIPPO assessment: Heuristics – This is a game with a deceptively simple gameplay but a richness that surpasses its visual appeal. There is no simply answer to the puzzle that confronts you. And the added time pressure will no doubt cause more than the average meltdown. But There is a symmetry here too and after the initial confusion, I believe that understanding will follow. All that goes out the window with nuclear, but hey doesn’t everything? Intrigue – I can’t see how this game will be any less as fun as the original. And the original sucked many happy hours of my childhood. Planning – Given this is a two player game, planning is really no more than sitting down and playing. But, hey, what’s wrong with that? Progression – What’s more important? The sea (get some troops), time (lose your ships) or attack (potential fail for bad dice). As time moves on the various pressures grow. Overall feel – Nostalgia city, here I come. Clever imagery, clever gameplay, but am I clever enough – time will tell!

Leehar Clan Executive Recruitment Method III: Open Bar! by QuikSilver (LHDD)
While I was doing some research about recruitment method of other clans, more specifically about «The Barracks» and «The Underworld», I started to play a lot of games with new players on this site. These new players where all francophone and needed help with some basics of team games. They all had an open mind and really talkative in the chat, all games were a pleasure. Inbox was a pain for communication. So I started to think, how can I facilitate the communications with these guys? The answer was clear, make a group for francophone. A little bit like «Club Conquête», but a closer group for all who speaks french. The group I wanted to create isn't only for recruitment, just a place where we can make new parthners and help each other, in a language we all mastered.
There's a description for that group, where the basics are explain. - - - - - Les Hussards du Dragon [LHDD] are proud to open a new francophone group: La Taverne des Hussards! «The Hussard's Bar». The main objective of this group is to unite all french players that wants to talk this beautiful language. This group searches for french players that want to talk strategies et socialise. This bar is a place where new players that are lost in this site can be helped out. We'll bring assistance and form new players so they'll can easily play in team and have fun playing with french players. Players that wants to join a clan will be help, we'll explain what's the clan scene and increase their game level. The main goal is to make friends out there and have fun playing. Les Hussards du Dragon will maybe recruits from that group, but for these who wants to join other clan that fine and these players will be helped out. The main idea is to help the community of players who speaks french. We all know there's a forum section called «Club Conquête», we do not want to replace it. We are mostly looking for players that want to be active in the community and just have fun talking in french of the Conquer Club game. All players that wants to know the Hussards and play with us are welcome. You can be in this group and play with another clan. This group is not reserve for Hussards recruits, but to all the francophone. Your english isn't that good? Than stop trying too hard to write it in the «game chat» we will understand you. And know this is the english version of my article, so if you want to join that group, try the french one. You'll know what to do! Drinks on me tonight! You can visit http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=167525 - - - - - I wanted this group for a while, thanks to Arkado to put this up.
We still have a few weeks before the ICL is scheduled to start.
After talking to CD's we thought it best to consolidate some of the leagues. We feel qwert's is simpler and easier for clans to plan for and would benefit the clan community as a whole more than our setup. Instead of competing with each others leagues, we want to help each other. So, how would you feel about switching setups to something similar to qwert's proposal? We feel like it will be simpler for everyone and be longer lasting than our current setup.
