Wow, that's seriously impressive. More power to you. I'm in Austin, and it's already been up to 105 degrees here. I honestly can't imagine not running the a/c at all or working outside all day in that kind of heat.
It's about 75 and raining in my area... :x

austin,? all you got to do is jump in the Guadalupe for a bit. as far as the heat goes,
you just have to expose yourself to it for a while.
get adjusted and it's not so bad. everyone did it so long ago. a shade tree can be very nice even in the smoldering heatr

I can't.

I currently have an ear infection caused by water trapped in my ear, so I'm not allowed to swim for a week...

But yeah, I guess I understand what you're saying. It's just that temperatures over 100 degrees are freaking unbearable for me. Seriously, if A/C didn't exist, I would live much further north than I do now. Like, at least Missouri north, or maybe Canada.

You guys are lucky then. We have dead (and sometimes live) crickets freaking everywhere. You can seriously walk past a group of stores and find hundreds of them laying in and around the crack where the sidewalk meets the outside walls of the buildings. I can't wait for summer to be over.

Nah, if I fished, that would be awesome. I've been a city dweller too long. Back when I lived in rural Arkansas that would have been awesome, but I haven't done any of that stuff in a long time. Not many opportunities to go fishing/hunting in the city.

That's ok, I love the winter and the cold. I love wearing hoodies. I can't wear hoodies very much in Texas.

Eh, I guess. It wasn't that interesting of a topic. I like what we were talking about better. But I guess we don't want the 5-0 to come in and get on us...

Ummm... for the record; Conservatism is not a political belief it is a basic human instinct.

Example; Imagine yourself in a tribe of starving people back when the buffalo still ran... but only 9 of the 10 men have gone on the hunt for months. When they finally brought home the food, who do you think ate last if he even got to eat at all?

Just wondering....

No, he is saying that Conservatism is a necessity and liberalism is a luxury. In his example, the person who does not do any work to get the food will only get food if there is a surplus provided by the workers. None of the people who did the work are going to go hungry for the person who didn't do any work, and it doesn't matter the reason.

New rule: Every time you start off a post with "so you are saying...." just follow it up with a "no" so then you will have the correct answer every time.

The underlined seems to be a staple of the internet. Almost anytime somebody starts a post with that phrase, it's a pretty safe bet that it is not what the person was saying at all.

But to be fair, Symmetry didn't start his post with that saying. He asked if he was saying that.

Eh, I don't know about that. It could simply mean that somebody is about to bastardize what you said, or any number of other things. It doesn't necessarily mean an analogy would be used. But yeah, I agree with your general sentiments about it.

To address this:
Phatscotty wrote:No, he is saying that Conservatism is a necessity and liberalism is a luxury. While I agree that Conservatism was necessary back when we were in tribes, as you and the person you have quoted pointed out, I think it's something we can and should move past. There are other things that were necessary/important back when we lived in tribes that should be moved past as well. Take racism, for instance. I think racism served an important function back when we were in tribes, since it payed to immediately be hostile/suspicious of anybody that wasn't a member of your tribe. But now that we live in cities and intermingle and interbreed with races from all around the world, it seems like the practice doesn't serve a purpose anymore.

To continue the analogy, we as a society can afford to be liberal with our resources now that we live in cities, produce surpluses of food, etc. Back when we lived in tribes, sure, it payed to be conservative. But we're not living in tribes anymore, so perhaps it's time to move away from such antiquated thinking.

Well we can't answer without more info. The 10th man who didn't go out for the hunt is probably the chief, and he delegates responsibility. He'd probably eat first.

Also depending on what area they were in or what other tribes were near by, it may have been important to leave behind some men to protect the villiage and families.

Typically they would pack up everything and move to where the Bison were.

Good lord... I rest my case

I made no mention of racial discrepancies in the tribe yet that is the first thing that comes to so many minds.... what a shame!!

How do we know that it wasn't a mostly black tribe and the one who didn't hunt was white???? idiots I swear! the whole point is lost on so many but trust me.... when the shit hits the fan (as it is is so many places) let's see who is so willing to give up their precious goods to someone who is not willing to pull their own weight.
