Diamonds

Postby Dibbun on Wed Jul 25, 2012 8:29 pm

I always laugh when I see Christians who wear diamond jewelry. I
wonder if they are aware that they are going to hell, since they are
opulently displaying wealth which has come at the cost of absolute
economic stagnation for an entire continent and countless bloody wars
in order to control diamond mines so that a foreign company can
continue to maintain artificially high prices. I know, the propaganda
is pretty good - diamonds mean love, they mean passion, they mean
purity, and all that jazz. You probably had good intentions when you
bought or are wearing those diamonds, though you know what they say
about good intentions - the road to hell is paved with 'em.

Fear not however. Anglo-American exceptionalists have come up with
some great solutions for your sins. First, you could go a day without
shoes. Never mind that perfunctory shoes could be fashioned out of a
banana leaf and some string if the need was truly there. A far better
way to help would be to ship over a copy of The Wealth of Nations for
every citizen in that country so they can adopt an economic system
that works.

Or, you can lobby your government to send foreign aid. Forget that all
the aid in the world under the Clinton Administration didn't mean dick
for Haiti because they did not possess the economic infrastructure to
deal with a major disaster. They did not even possess free will
whatsoever - a man elected with 92% of the vote was forcibly placed
into exile by the United States and disallowed re-entry to his
country. Yes, this was within the last decade. But who needs democracy
when Idol Gives Back? We're essentially bribing these people to let us
plunder them. In case you miss the analogy, we've made Haiti our
prostitute.

My favorite is this Kony 2012 jazz. Leave it to you white people to
claim that the solution to all of Africa's problems is to assassinate
a black man. That is seriously hilarious, no joke. Remember when they
asked you if you would go back and kill Hitler, and some of you said
no because someone would take his place? What happens if you kill this
guy? The infrastructure which created him will still remain. Why don't
we have child soldiers in America? It's because it's not profitable.
Why is it profitable in Africa? Because an evil, corrupt corporation,
De Beers, funded by well-meaning hell-bound idiots, like yourself,
pays these warlords to maintain order by any means necessary.

But wait! The Kimberley Process! No conflict diamonds! Hahaha, that's
like saying the War on Drugs prevents drug importation in the least.
If there's profit to be made, there's trafficking to be done. Those
blood diamonds are in the general supply, there's no way to stop it
because nobody cares enough.

I like how De Beers has a mining ship called Peace in Africa. If I
were a different person I would blow that bitch up. That is some Death
and Destruction in Africa because as a civilization they are
encouraged at every turn by transnational corporations, by the IMF and
World Bank, and by our humanitarian aid to forgo advancing their
industrial potential in order to maintain a mercantilism posture and
export their natural resources to a foreign power so they can be
processed and sold by that power.

Honestly is this really hard to see? Why is Africa such a shithole
compared to Europe and other industrialized nations? I mean either
it's racism, in that you think blacks can't get their shit together,
or maybe AIDS, although life expectancy with full on AIDS is
comparable to what even the most advanced nations had a couple hundred
years ago, or maybe it's because we insist on fucking them over at
every turn, with a smile on our faces because the diamond refracts
light, and that's oh so pretty.

I could maybe, possibly, barely, but not really, see God forgiving you
if that diamond jewelry had any function whatsoever, but it is simply
a status symbol, for you to be as Haman (Book of Esther, look it up)
and have people defer to you due to propping yourself up on a flimsy
foundation based on false pride and wonton hubris.

I hear a lot of squawking about perceived historical injustices - as a
person of primarily Irish descent, I could jump on that bandwagon -
but how about you use the experience of your people's exploitation as
motivation to prevent continued recurrence of exploitation of others?
Not buying diamonds is not a solution, but it just might save you from
hell. Oh and here's a nice quote...

"If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise
they'll kill you."

I see nothing funny in my post. Come at me, bro.

I think it mostly comes down to ignorance. My wife has a big-ass chunk of
diamond on her finger, but she received it before either of us really
understood what was likely behind it, and it now carries enough personal
importance to us both that we won't get rid of it. But if we had known
then what we do now, we certainly would not have supported the
diamond cartels.

Unfortunately, it's really not a well-known situation.

Right. I agree with Woodruff on this one. Information/knowledge is imperfect. Not everyone knows that some unknown (yet probably large) proportion of diamonds are extracted through slave labor and other oppressive means in the diamond mines of most African countries. Due to this ignorance, it isn't correct to apply one's knowledge to the ignorance of others--at the time of their deciding to purchase a diamond. However, if they're aware of this immoral possibility, yet they choose to buy a diamond, hen that's morally unacceptable in my opinion.

blood diamonds are so mainstream that they've been in a james bond movie for allah sake. in die another day the bad guy's face has blood diamonds blown into it after a rumble in the jungle gone wrong.

if you're really interested in what goes on in the congo, google 'unwatchable congo'. protip: you'll need some tissues and a bottle of hand lotion at the ready.

fun additional note: it isn't just diamonds. how about 'blood minerals'?

almost all mobile phones are made using conflict minerals (for the circuitry etc.), which are harvested in exactly the same blood-thirsty way as Congolese diamonds.

happy air time!

So even if it has a use, you believe using exploitational goods is a grave sin.

Makes sense if you think about it.

Also, it's just a matter of time till some bastard manages to mine one of those diamond asteroids flying about and thus plummets the diamond prices to such a level that even the biggest rock will barely be equivalent to ONE human life.

We'd best take advantange while we still can.

Not just labor but only one family has the majority of the diamonds in the world, and they try to fix prices.

Legal issues on monopolizing and fixing prices
Sherman Antitrust Act

During World War II, Ernest Oppenheimer attempted to negotiate a way around the Sherman Antitrust Act by proposing that De Beers register a US branch of the Diamond Syndicate Incorporated. In this way, his company could provide the US with the industrial diamonds it desperately sought for the war effort in return for immunity from prosecution after the war; however his proposal was rejected by the US Justice Department when it was discovered that De Beers had no intention of stockpiling any industrial diamonds in the US.[17] In 1945, the Justice Department finally filed an antitrust case against De Beers, but the case was dismissed as the company had no presence on US soil.[40]
Gem diamonds

From 2001 onwards several lawsuits were filed against De Beers in US State and Federal courts. These alleged that De Beers unlawfully monopolised the supply of diamonds and conspired to fix, raise and control diamond prices. Additionally there were allegations of misleading advertising. While De Beers denied all allegations that it violated the law, in November 2005, De Beers announced that an agreement had been reached to settle civil class action suits filed against the company in the United States, and in March 2006, three other civil class action suits were added to the November agreement. In April 2008, De Beers confirmed that Judge Chesler of the US Federal District Court in New Jersey had entered an order approving the Settlement, resulting in a settlement arrangement totalling $295 million USD. De Beers does not admit liability. As part of the settlement, persons who purchased gem diamonds from 1 January 1994, to 31 March 2006, may be eligible for compensation.[41]
Industrial diamonds

In 2004 De Beers pled guilty and paid a $10 million fine to the United States Department of Justice to settle a 1994 charge that De Beers had colluded with General Electric to fix the price of industrial diamonds.[42][43]
European Competition Commission

In February 2006, De Beers entered into legally binding commitments with the European Commission to cease purchasing rough diamonds from Alrosa as of the end of 2008.[44] In January 2007, the European Commission announced it had closed the file due to lack of Community Interest. The commission decision is under appeal before the Court of First Instance in Luxemburg.[45]

Hell, this is a great way to put off your wife or GF into bugging you about buying her a nice rock to wear on her ring.

"When you gonna buy me that diamond ring you son of a bitch!"

"But, baby, don't you know where those diamonds come from? Slave labor! You don't want to support slave labor, do you? Is that ring on your finger worth the lives of little children dying? Here, baby, this is a nice cubic zirconia for you to wear."

That'll fix her.

Yeah, hot chicks don't give a crap about anyone else, let alone some poor bastards worked to death in diamond mines half a world away.

I didn't consider that.....

Yeah, fat chicks are normally in their head all the time, probably looking for proof that the world is shitty so they have a pretext to feel badly.

After paying off the government, how does De Beers fare? I'd say pretty good for them. How much really did change after all these monopoly suits?
