The acrid smell of gun-smoke seers across the olfactory senses of my imagination.
I hear quick-marching jackboots plot across my keys.
Great generals machinate at their table of war. Shifting weary soldiers with the flourish of a hand; realities trudge will be long and harsh to the battlefield of my mind.
The distant crack and rumble of cannon-fire romances each soldier to their demise. Only reflection flashes glory, and only victory tells its story.
No -- not just you. I too visualize the sounds and senses of battle, dependent on the geography of the territories being invaded. I'm a student of history and have read first-hand accounts of the most terrible battles, and this seeps into all of my strategies and tactics (perhaps to the detriment of my play!)
Thanks for the post. Make me think

hehe you know how to cut through the crap Fitz! I honestly do not know why but it's more addictive than poker and all you can win here are points..... as long as CC don't start giving cash prizes I may just about be able to keep in touch with reality!

Personally, I don't view it in quite as serious a manner (excellent description, BTW) - but I find it easier to take severe losses if I envision my soldiers trying to charge at the enemy with improper equipment.
"I lost 10 armies on that attack. Must've used the nerf guns today. THis isn't dart tag, people!"
"Everybody used to say I was annoying, and throw rocks at me."

yeap sometimes the dice make you wonder if your men are armed to the teeth with assorted cutlery .. mainly spoons.
I have some quick flashes in my mind of a battle, but it really depends on the map. For example there would not be many musketeers in ancient Greece or post apocalyptic USA. (Or maybe there will be? dun dun dun!)

Good point mate .. i have the Classic map in my mind, but the styles of the maps help evoke the eras too; great cartography!
