Staffordshire bull terriers. Loyal, loving and in my experience great with other dogs and people. You have to show them who's the boss early on as they will try it on and can be quite stubborn.

Rumpelstiltskin, the dog next door to where I live, is pretty big and doesn't seem to shed much.

Also, Nando is the same way (my friend Barry's dog).

Neither of them are very friendly, though.

LMK if you need me to track-down any others and I can look around the neighborhood here.

Border Collies and Australian shepherds. Both extremely intelligent and extremely active. NOT city-dogs though.

I'm a city guy though, so that's important. Though I do have my own decent sized yard.
Staffies are a good suggestion; my wife used to have some. I'm also considering a Vizsla, not sure how much they shed.

I have a mut. She is Boxer/Pitbull mix. Short hair very little shedding. Good, loyal and protective.

Dude, don't get a vizsla....they are bird dogs and very active and need to hunt...also pretty fucking stupid and will resort to hunting squirrels, cats, etc, in the neighborhood....hunted with them (and weimeroners) my whole life....

I live in a city myself and still manage to get my dog to a park twice a day. Don't get a staffy if you can't give it a good amount of exercise or they'll wreck your home.

Schnauzers and Bouviers shed very little as well, but they do clit very easily, so you'd have to shave them once or twice a year. Would do well as city-dogs I think; my father has/had a Schnauzer/Bouvier and they just sleep all day until you're home. Much less chance they'll chew everything up. Note, they are guard dogs, and especially the Bouvier is extremely protective.

hell yeah. That's what I have, and she is really lovely. I'm having my baby in 2 month and I know I wouldn't have any problem leaving her with the baby, she is really nice with everybody and pretty smart. As asylym said, you just need to give them a real good education in her fisrt month.
My girlfriend had a staffie before, and when that dog got old she bought a new staffie, who got tought things in life by the old one. You need to socialize them with other dogs wen they're young, after that, they will never be agressive towards other dogs.
It remains a pretty small dog, but it acts like a big one. The head has the size of a big dog anyways lol.

well i go to the beach 2-3 times a week with mine and have a long walk, oterwise I play "catch the ball" with her a couple of times a week, the rest of the time I just take her out 10 minutes in the morning 10 minutes at night, and she is really quiet and has never wrecked anything other than her toys

Dogs are not legal baby sitters in Canada. But when the baby is 3 or more, it's OK as long as the dog is 12 or more in equivalent human years.

If it were possible to have a Dire Wolf I would definitely want one. And I would use it to vanquish my enemies.
