The new political age of the West

Post by mrswdk »

Is the current surge in populist politics/rejection of the 'Establishment' actually a symptom of mainstream political parties being stuck in an early-to-mid 20th century version of reality which no longer exists? Rather than merely showing us 'how stupid deh voters are', do the Trump/Hilary, Brexit/No Brexit etc. debates actually show us where the real societal divides now lie, the lines around which politicians now need to be focusing, rather than all congregating around the same point to the effect that they all become largely indistinguishable from each other?

Well China is certainly stuck in the past. Let's invade Tibet, it was chinese 200 years ago! Let's claim the south-china sea, China sailed those waters during ancient times after all!

I know you Pinoys are all fixated on how much more powerful China is than your own lame ass, video game banning country with its new rape-condoning president, but maybe you should save your adulation for a thread which actually has some relevance to China?

This thread is about the shifting political landscape in countries like the US and UK, and how their big political parties need to adapt. Keep up ^0^

A. I'm not Filipino; my mother is. The longest I ever spent over there was 2 weeks.
B. I agree Duterte is a prime example of a dangerous populist. It would not surprise me if he turned the Philippines into a militarist nation.

Maybe the Philippines should be included in the list of elective representative democracies whose trajectories match the one outlined in OP.

Anyways, the point is about the need for a realignment of political discourse in these countries to address the widespread alienation a lot of people clearly feel, not to disparage elective democracy as a system.

A realignment which mainstream politicians have refused to undertake, hence the rise of people such as Trump, Farage, La Pen and Wilders.

There's some real macbone-worthy attempts at derailing going on in this thread.

Can you rephrase the question since I'm not sure I know what your points are? Can you provide an example of the lines around which politicians now need to be focusing?

Here's an issue politicians should focus on: robots

As I've mentioned before, the paradigms of "homeowner" and "jobs" are nearing the end of their life. We need to prepare for a post-jobs economy.
