If your state depends on you to operate and you flee the state to keep it from operating, what would you have them do? This isn't a valid political action, it's just cowardice. They should have tried to do their jobs and negotiate what they could. They still could, since they are free of any actual dereliction of duty charges that they would get if they did any other job of importance.

Oregon has a democratic super-majority.. so they can vote & pass laws and republican votes do not matter..
republicans DID try to negotiate. .the democrats refused to budge..
so the republicans walked out of negotiations..
the problem the democrats are facing is it takes 20 members of the house in order to put a bill u[p for vote.. there are 18 democrats & 12 republicans.. this is referred to as a Quorum.. it would be illegal for democrats to vote on the bill with only 18 members present.. so they are required to have 20 .. so they need 2 republicans to just be present in the room..
the republicans refusing to show up is a fully legitimate political move.

using the police to round up the house members & force them to show up is an attempt at Fascism .. plain & simple...

what are the police going to do if they show up at the republican House members residence & the republican says " no.. I am not going ".. are the police going to physically force the republican to comply.. ?
are they going to taser him, wrestle him to the ground & handcuff him.. ?
not going to work is NOT a crime..

it is amazing though how these leftists are actually trying to defend this..

This describes where I grew up, live, vacation, camp, play and hunt. I literally HATE going into Portland these days and NOTHING could get me to Eugene...lol.

They should be fired.

When you don’t show up for work you get fired. It happens to everyone else. Why not these Legislators?

You can’t just not go to work because you don’t like the job or the working environment or your coworkers.
You either suck it up and work anyway, or you quit.

If you don’t like what your coworkers are doing you go to you boss (which isn this case would be the voting public) and tell the boss(es).
If you are right and you make your case, you’ll get your way... which in this would be getting the Democrats voted out next election cycle.

Now you can refute the idea of firing people who refuse to show up for work as a bad idea in THIS case or in cases where elected officials are concerned.
That’s fine... and I’d ask you to why it’s a bad idea? Is there a limit as to how long an elected official should be allowed to skip work before there are consequences? If we can’t ‘fire’ them maybe there should be some sort of recall or impeachment option? What reasons would be acceptable for allowing someone to be a no-show; is it ok for an elected official to skip work to go fishing?

As a taxpayer I feel that the people I employ (i.e. all public employees including elected, appointed, or otherwise hired) should show up and do the job they were hired/elected to do. I don’t see how you can do you’re job by specifically avoiding doing your job.

I suppose in the literal sense, it's legit because it's not against the law.

And yes, I understand that sometimes the law is stupid, but in this case I don't think it is. Democracy is a conversation. "Parliament" is derived from the French word for speech. Your word Congress has similar origins -- it is derived from the Latin term "let us walk together" which contains the unspoken adjunct "let us walk and talk together." The assumption in having debates in Parliament/Congress is that all points of view will be considered before a decision is made. There will be conversation, give-and-take, compromise.

And yet, we know that in real life Parliaments and Congresses often do not behave in that idealized way. Majority parties bring forth legislation and ram it through by sheer force of numbers, completely disregarding valid concerns that minority parties bring up. That isn't how democracy is supposed to work. The concerns brought up by minority parties are supposed to be thoughtfully considered, not simply overruled just because someone has a strong majority.

When minority concerns are completely disregarded by a bullying majority, I do think it is right and proper that the minority should employ whatever guerilla tactic they can come up with to try to bring the bullying under control.
