Cristoforo Colombo or Spain is where the gold is!
The year 1492 should be familiar to many; a merchant originally from the Republic of Genoa named Cristoffa Corombo managed to convince the King and Queen of Spain to grant him a fleet of three ships to sail west in the hopes of landing in the far East and as a result he discovered the continent that would be named after someone else. But there is a lot more to the story than meets the eye.
On January 2, 1492, the King and Queen of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella completed the Reconquista, or the reclaiming of the lands from Islamic invaders with the official surrender of Granada which was negotiated a few months earlier under the Treaty of Granada, signed on November 25, 1491.
So now we come back to Cristoffa Corombo. He had detailed information on the exact size of the earth, but since that information had been expressed in Arabic miles rather than Roman miles he significantly underestimated the size of the globe. He first pitched his idea of sailing west to King John II of Portugal in 1485, and to Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile the next year. Unlike King John II, they gave the merchant enough money to keep him from going to some other Christian monarch.
While we may never know the exact reasons for his voyages, some scholars suggest that he wanted to petition the ruler of the far east to fund, in both gold and manpower, a new crusade into the holy lands. With that in mind it is easier to see why the success of the Reconquista might have softened opposition to his far-fetched plans. This resulted in his voyage resulting in the sighting of land on October 12, and the rest, they say, is history.
So instead of concentrating on the voyage or even his destination, this month’s challenge will be the place where he spent almost seven years trying to convince someone to finance him, the Iberian Peninsula, or more specifically, the map known as Iberia.
