Strategies and Tactics on Capturing Airports on USA 2.0

Hi guys, so I usually like to play on a cautious defensive strategy, my question is: on USA 2.0, is it better to capture the airports early on to gain territories and increase your maneuverability or later in the game when you have more territories and bonuses to stack? This question is also applicable to the Hive map, with using Honey Storage Cells to attack distant territories.

I can't answer for USA map, it's too messy for me.
But for hive, I normally like to grab some smaller bonuses and get myself established before thinking of the honey cells.. apart from being able to jump the board, they do provide a nice defensive barrier
