The only "proof" is what somebody
claims, which was at best passed on via oral traditions until it was written down hundreds, possibly thousands of years later.
It was much easier to convince uneducated people of anything in those days - as Arthur C Clarke said, any sufficiently advanced technology will seem like magic, and it's a similar phenomenon with how those who could think philosophically or write would seem to those who couldn't.
Non-existent imaginary friends probably didn't say anything to anybody. It's more likely - and been shown to be possible - that they accidentally ingested some mind-altering substances before having these "visions".
