There is now a growing debate and concern about Data Centers, used to power the Electronic Age of large computer networks that power the data and electronics needed for much of our computer and electronics, including cell phones. Our society wants and depends more on electronics and "Big Data" for many applications, increasing the need for:
1) Data Centers;
2) power plants to produce electricity (from many energy sources);
3) water to cool the Data Centers.
Among the ironies of this debate are that:
A) Both the Left and Right oppose data centers;
B) As Data Centers grow in numbers, more opposition has occurred.
C) Many oppose Data Centers without actually understanding what they are.
D) When people speak of "storing data in the Cloud" there is NO CLOUD; that data is stored actually in Data Centers. The "Cloud" implies there is NO PHYSICAL place when that vague notion is entirely FALSE.
Data Centers are needed to power our Electronics, including cell phones, computers, AI, and websites like this one. The Data Center may not house the equipment and software for THIS website, but the CONNECTIONS to computers and cell phones are likely via many Data Centers.
My state of Virginia is one of many places that is beginning to debate and oppose Data Centers, after an initial positive receptions to them.
If they weren't storing and analysing so many tracking cookies, there wouldn't be so much data to store
I did see something recently about plug-in solar panels, which don't use batteries (although of course therefore only work when the sun is shining); perhaps there will be, of necessity, developments in technology which make these centres less of a burden. Quantum computers, room-temperature super conductors, graphene, who knows what else will come along? They may one day take the step from hypothetical to real, and these data centres will become the size of a phone.
Cold climates and abundant hydro electric energy make Canada perfect for this.
Texas is going to make future data centers live off the grid by hosting their own power source. Likely old 747 engines no longer flight rated, but very efficient producing power.

The issue is that we need to leave this planet at some point in order to survive, and as things stand, huge amount of data and AI represent a fundamental part of how we're going to find somewhere to live and the means to get there. Data centres and AI are a necessary evil, one just hopes they can sort out a less damaging way to power them.
The people who scream against date centers should never stream another show from netflix, hulu, or any other service. Also they should never have online access to stored photos, medical records, or any type of financial information.

I used to have a 10 speed, then 15 speed; NOW I have a hybrid with 21 gears. I rode it twice since Monday; I have had a another BUSY work for more rides. I stay mostly on pavement, but can go onto packed gravel or even packed dirt.
And those riding electric bikes are DANGEROUS, to themselves and to others. They ride with no helmets or things to make them more visibile (lights, bright clothing) AND do not follow the rules of the road and cross streets and lines in a dangerous manner. Most such riders are young males, most who think of themselves as invincible, until their bike meets a car or big SUV (or even a small SUV).
