learning states/provinces

Postby Willgfass on Fri Jul 21, 2006 5:21 pm

I am appalled that half of the British and canadians don't know more than 10 states. i am just as appaled that americans don't even know how britain and canada is divided. i find it really embarasing
If common sense was so common, wouldn't everyone have it?

Who cares if the British and Canadians don't know more than 10 states? To them we're just a bunch of stupid yanks anyway. They don't live here, so it doesn't matter if they know our country or not.

NI isn't part of Great Britain - Its part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. (I am a pedant)
The Isle of Man is neither part of GB or UK!
It is part of the British Isles but that is a geographical rather than political grouping.

Great Britain, United Kingdom, its all the same. I hate how the world has different names for things. Its BS. Im currently making a map and it has Burma in it, only some people call in Myanmar, wtf. Every time i try doing a google search or find out information on it i have to try both as some places recognise one way and some places recognise another.

Burma's official name is the Union of Myanmar. A lot of countries call it burma because they refuse to recognize the ruling military junta. In 1989 they changed the english version of the name from burma to myanmar along with the names of cities, such as the capital from Rangoon to Yangon. But its all a moot point because the official name of the country in Burmese didn't change. Its just what we end up calling it that changed. Some countries just don't acknowledge the change because the military junta was not legitimately elected and pretty much everyone still refers to it as Burma cause they don't even think that the military junta has the right to change the english version of the name. So there you have it.

Just as a side note. Myan means swift and Ma means strong. Thats where the name comes from.

And how the hell are we supposed to know how england is divided. Its confusing as hell. Are you talking about the geographic counties which don't mean anything anymore, but still exist. Or the metropolitan counties and non-metropolitan counties? Or how about the parishes that don't even exist everywhere. Or are you referring to how england is divided up into its 9 regions?

He was calling them states to imply that we are being imperialists and attacking around the world taking over new regions. He was not seriously calling them states.

Nivarnia?

Houston is the capital of Texas, not a state.

And just for your own knowledge, Mississippi. Lots of doubles. I remember learning how to spell that in kindergarten cause its kinda fun to spell it.

If you wanna learn the US states - check out mousebreaker.com

There's a game to put them all in place.

Also one for the English/Welsh counties (not sure why they included Wales but not Scotland and N.I.), and African and European countries, although the Europe one isn't displayed too well.

I reckon I can now remember about 90% of them all after playing them a few (...too many...) times.
