Round 3

Ran into a bit of bad luck here, as I was heading South with the intention of gaining access to Lands End. Those Neutral enemies seem to always win.

alstergren wrote:Hmm... if I were you, I would put everything together - go through Hampshire into Cornwall, grabbing it. You don't do much good in Scotland, yellow is your only hope with respect to keeping blue at bay (and blue is your best chance keeping yellow from Wales). Get Cornwall - they won't have time to bother with you for a round or two until either blue or yellow comes out on top - and then try to slowly put up some armies in Scotland and in SE-England when deploying.

Going into to Lands End is sort of a long term goal, but I do not want to look too strong this early. I really just want my opponents to ignore me at this point.

I took your advice.

Well, I'm now pushing into Wales, I know that yellow only gets 3 armies next go so he can't over oiwer me then. I'm slightly worries about scotland comming in but we'll have to play it by ear.
I'd also like to get lands end... there'll be a fight for it!!

Round 4

Still slow going from the previous failure. I had an easy kill that I took, just wanted to get a card for now.

I fortify Meath and attack Donegal so I have the whole of Ireland. It looks like Red is going to get south england and as this is worth 7 armies (the most on this board) he'll be the biggest potential threat.
I still have a small hold on Lands end, I might try for that next, but Ireland is my priority.

I nearly attacked into wales this turn as well, but I don't want to stretch myself too thin

If you have enough troops, you can begin moving your defended borders into Scotland, so you have a beachhead to attack from and possibly take Scotland later.

a bit of a gamble, nbut I took Civvers's advice!

So I've gone into Scotland on your advice!
I now have 10 on Galloway and green has 4 on Isle of Man, and he might get another 8 next round - that makes 12 and enough to attack and even get my Ireland bonus...
If Yellow (nothing to lose) and green both attack - or create an alliance I might be screwed!!

Wouldn't kennyC be more wise to fortify up some of his areas? with a look to taking sussex and isle of white?

Any hints for me? Got a bgr set of cards next go - besides taking blues bonus?

Slow and steady here just took one more place in South England. Good question about fortifying my areas, I have found that when you are trying to take such a large region it is easy to spread yourself too thin. By not placing all of my troops in one basket right away I prevent myself from going too far. Also it makes my position deceptive, because it really does make me look weaker than I probably am, and not a threat to anyone as I do not have a large number of troops on anyone's border. Since I do not hold a full area I probably do not have a target on my head, I am not extremely concerned about defence at this point.

I too are going softly softly!
just a quick card from yellow and a fortification on Lands end.
I notice from the BOB menu that I have the most troops and more to come to me every turn, but green is strong...
I'll aim for lands end next go, unless the scottish threat becomes a priority (I notice that there's an 8 lingering around there!!

I think Prmurty got a bum deal that go - looking at the game log:
2007-07-10 08:28:12 - Prmurty deployed 13 armies on Dorset

then:

2007-07-11 09:17:01 - chessplaya attacked Dorset from Wiltshire and conquered it from Prmurty

Chessplaya seems to be a bit quite on the forum, but he's doing well. I had to take his bonus so I attacked Isle of Man. I also fortified Donegal as he gets 6 next round and he's still got that 8 on South Highlands!

Kenny, why don't you attack Isle of White to get a bonus every round?

Well I took over the midlands of the map and I was so weak and i couldnt defend it .. i knew i couldnt so I didnt want to waste my extra men i get to defend my borders cuz then when blue did attack me on isles of man i would have lost 6+ extra men ... so I looked for another opening waited for blue to waste his and yellows amies in lands end and settled there

What i am aiming for is eliminating yellow as soon as possible

Now yellow be careful i am after you!

seems u guys all have a strategy in ur minds, in my experience, as soon as i formulate a strategy and have in my head my next move, the dice some how finds out about it and tries to in evry possible way screw up my next step. so i have decide to stop thinking and just WING IT, luck seems to be on my side more when i try that . i just hope the dice dont find out that winging it is my strategy

I looked at the game again. What strikes is why blue doesn't launch an al out attack on yellow in order to take him out of the game. Next round, yellow will probably have another card, killing a two card player is a good round. Taking Wales in the same round while taking out the blue 8 if possible in Scotland would give his opponents two targets with very few troops lined up against it. They would break Wales, but probably not Ireland. And even if they did, the cost would be high, still leaving blue ahead.

After Chessmaster cleaned up the mess in Lands End I was able to swoop in with my card bonus and take it. As for not taking Isle of Wight, I thought that I had the best chance of holding Lands End rather than the whole South England area. Plus not grabbing the full South England Bonus gives my threats an excuse to look somewhere else, if I took it someone would certainly have to attack me.

as u can see KennyC made the wrong decision and thought that attacking me is the most valiant idea .... well what he missed is that blue is the strongest player not me

so what i did is the following i attacked him to show him that attacking me will only get both our asses out of the game

and let me be the 1st to congratulate blue on his win!

I couldn't take all of Wales as yellow does have a 9 waiting... it would have taken a lot of armies to defeat him, then red's 7 could have annoyed!
I don't think chessplaya's 8 on South Highlands is 'scaring the shit' out of me, I'll have him soon enough!!

It did seem a bit odd, and very beneficial to me, that red and green are fighting it out over the south...

Round 8

Interesting turn of events here, chessplaya for some reason thought that I should be responsible for attacking blue despite a lack of shared borders with blue (just the Isle of Wight but gaining that doesn't hurt blue). To me his actions seemed excessive to prove his point, I don't understand why in the world he would give up at that stage of the game. I think the attack only proves that my evaluation of chessplaya as my biggest threat was correct, justifying my attacks. There was certainly some ground to be gained against blue from trying to hold North England which would have allowed me to then attack blue on this turn. I was left with two options, bring my troops up to North England, or try to regain Lands End. I went with the later because now I am just in survival mode. Unfortunately I came up short, but had I been able to grab Lands End, I may have been able to build up troops while blue cleaned up in the North.

Please elaborate more on your stragegy to win here chessplaya, because this is the type of move I expect from a newbie out to get revenge. I certainly deserved the attack, I'm not complaining about that, but I think you missed the point of this game and thread.

All I've done is make a mistake this round!
I put all my 10 armies on DYfed thinking Dyfed could attack Clwyd, but it can't!!

I tried to take Scotland and failed there as well. Still, no-one else is getting bonus 'cept me.

Chessplaya and KennyC can fight it out!

Why did you leave enough room for yellow to break your continent bonus?? See the top of the map. I would have suggested placing 3 troops there too..

Ok, I finished off chessplaya for the cards. Now I need to hope that yellow can do some damage to blue letting me back into the game. I'm setup to take the last peice of South England on my next turn.

Still recovering from chessplaya's attack, so I just finished up taking South England with Isle of Wight, and I tried to make a dent in blues troops in Scotland. Luckily for me Blue has no troops in an attacking position so I should get at least one more turn, unfortunately I probably need about 3 more turns where I am ignored to get back into it the game.
