the biggest thing wrong with this map is that, at the time of the crusades (1096 to 1204), there was no mongol empire: genghis khan founded mongolia in 1207 (this year is the 800th anniversary) and started his expansion only after the period of the map. all of the purple area will have to have pre-mongol names.

THE CRUSADES - 13TH CENTURY

let the games commence - any comments welcome...

catholics 5 armies
islamic 4 armies
orthodox 3 armies
mongol 3 armies
pagan 3 armies
jewish nomads 3 armies (countries marked with star of david)
all these religions were battling it out in europe in the 13th Century

the crusades
if you own at least one of the above religions then you get an additional army bonus of 3 armies for holding Holy Lands

note - the carpathian mountains are impassable.

I still don't know why France and The Holy Roman Empire are Jewish. Sure, they had very many Jewish communities, but the overall religion was Catholic :?

This is a decent start. Here's my two cents:

1) Scarp the Jewish star idea. It's confusing, as well as historically inaccurate on this current version.

2) There should be a +1 bonus for having the holy lands.

3) It's "Caspian Sea" not "Casbian Sea"

4) Islamic should be worth more than 4. (Maybe 5/6?)

5) Add an attack route so that Sicily borders Tunis and the Byzantine Empire.

6) Make the Orthodox bonus more than 3. (4 would be a good number)

The byzantines controlled a portion of the middle east. I think some of the countries west of bagdad.

i believe, to allow for the mongol empire, champos has moved the date of the map to the 13th century, when the byzantine state controlled none of the area from baghdad to the holy lands.

the fourth crusade (1204) resulted in the crusaders burning constantinople and installing a puppet emperor, who had authority over only about half of what was the empire. the map below shows the position at this point. it appears that "roman sultanate" ought to be "sultanate of rum".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:LatinEmpire2.png

the position of ilkhanate is wrong. it was in the same place as khwarez shah (see conquer club mongol empire map), but later in the 13th century. it's possible to have one or the other, but not both.

why do you call vladimir-suzdal, tchuds?

The chuds/tchuds were not strong enough to (and didn´t) control that area..
It was part of the Kievan rus and seems to have been the strongest principality at the time - the beginning of the grand duchy of moscow.

and yes they were greek-orthodox, same as byzantines

Paganism was never a dominant relegion. Very small percentage were pagan. The blue places were actually orthodox and catholic.

I thought the 13th century was 1200 AD, and the 1st century was year 0-99.

Could be wrong though.

for the russian principalities of chernigov, smolensk and novgorod, i tend to agree.

however, before 1387, the vast majority of lithuanians was indeed pagan.

http://viduramziu.lietuvos.net/socium/k ... ybe-en.htm

Lithuanians in 1387 and Western Lithuanians, or Samogitians, in 1417 were the last in Europe to accept the Roman Catholic faith. They did not go through the Middle Ages. Until then Lithuanians had worshiped their own pagan gods related to the cosmos, natural phenomena (fire worshipping), nature and wildlife.

yup coleman is right. d.gish is confused with 1200 ad and 13th century. he meant 1200 or 13 century, not 1300.
